Chapter 203 Charlotte, how did we get to this point!
After a bit, the sound of a car engine starting came from the courtyard; Frederick must have left.
Charlotte figured he was a bit mad but didn't let it bother her.
With him gone, she took the little white dog and left too.
They didn't contact each other all day.
Saturday night, Charlotte went to Lily and Bradley's wedding.
The wedding was at a five-star hotel with just four tables, much quieter than Nicholas's recent wedding. Bradley and Lily didn't seem too happy either.
Charlotte wished them well.
Lily's voice shook as she hugged her.
Bradley, standing behind Lily, exchanged a look with Charlotte.
His eyes were complicated; he knew what Charlotte had sacrificed. He felt both grateful and guilty.
Charlotte gave him a calm smile.
Bradley had always been a bit cynical.
But he knew he owed Charlotte and could never repay her.
Charlotte made some small talk and then took her seat, scanning the room. Frederick wasn't there.
She felt relieved!
The whole wedding was filled with mixed emotions. Even the bride and groom seemed less joyful while toasting, but Bradley kept holding Lily's hand, supporting her forced smile.
After the banquet, Charlotte went to the restroom.
While washing her hands, she thought of Bradley and Lily holding hands. She hoped Lily would be happy. Just as she was about to leave, she heard Bradley's voice. "Charlotte."
She turned around.
Bradley, in formal attire, was leaning against the hallway smoking. Seeing her, he put out his cigarette and thanked her sincerely.
Charlotte didn't say much. "It's not easy for you two to be together. Take good care of Lily."
Bradley nodded.
He couldn't help but ask, "How are things with him?"
They both knew who "him" was.
Charlotte was a bit stunned, then smiled faintly. "It's just like that! Bradley, don't worry about it. You just got married. Enjoy your honeymoon!"
Bradley felt conflicted.
He wanted to say more, but Lily suddenly appeared, looking dazed. "Bradley, what did you just say?"
Bradley was startled.
He quickly went over to comfort her. "I'm just chatting with Charlotte!"
Lily gently pushed him away.
She had heard Bradley ask about Frederick. 'Charlotte and Frederick are together?'
She wasn't dumb. Her sudden divorce from Robert and her chance to marry Bradley must have been helped by someone more powerful than the Turner family. She never thought it would be Frederick!
Lily's eyes reddened, and she looked at Charlotte with trembling lips.
Charlotte sighed softly. She said to Bradley, "Step aside. Let me talk to her alone for a bit."
Bradley thought it would be easier for women to talk, so he agreed. As he left, he gently patted Lily's shoulder. "No matter what, don't get too upset!"
In the past, Lily had a fiery temper.
But now, she didn't have the confidence to get angry because the survival of the child in her belly might have been a result of Charlotte's sacrifices. She couldn't describe her feelings.
At this moment, she wanted to cry!
Charlotte walked over and adjusted her wedding dress. "You look beautiful! A bride should look like a bride, no crying! Lily, I'm fine. I don't plan to get married anymore, so I won't wrong anyone!"
Lily still cried.
She always thought she could talk to Charlotte about anything, but she had never heard that Charlotte didn't want to get married anymore.
Lily choked. "I don't believe it!"
Charlotte gently hugged Lily and whispered, "I've loved two people, and both ended in tragedy. So, being alone is pretty good!"
She had actually thought about it. After her career stabilized in a year, she might go abroad, spend time with Bernice, or take her mom on a world tour.
Without love, she believed she could still live well!
Charlotte had come to terms with it early on, but Lily was still sad. She looked up, about to say something, but her gaze froze.
Frederick was standing behind Charlotte, looking calm. It was unclear how long he had been there.
Lily's eyes widened, and she softly said, "Frederick is here!"
Charlotte was stunned.
She slowly turned around and saw him, elegant and poised, standing under the crystal chandelier.
The atmosphere was tense.
Finally, Frederick spoke softly. "Charlotte can't drive; I'll take her home."
Lily moved slightly.
Bradley, knowing her temper, whispered, "Let them handle it themselves!"
Lily's body stiffened for a long time before finally relaxing.
Charlotte gave them a faint smile. "Congratulations on your wedding!"
She left with Frederick.
In the elevator, neither of them spoke, and there was no conversation even on the way back.
Half an hour later, the car stopped in front of Charlotte's apartment building.
Charlotte felt her neck stiffen a bit. She gently twisted it and said, "I'm getting out."
He locked the car door.
Charlotte's hand on the door handle slowly relaxed, and she leaned back in her seat, her voice hoarse. "Frederick."
Frederick turned to look at her.
Charlotte was still beautiful.
She had fair skin, delicate features, and golden hair that looked very soft.
He wanted to have this person, not just to sleep with her, but to have her entirely, to spend his life with her.
But Charlotte said she didn't want to get married anymore!
Frederick had never experienced such pain, a pain in his heart that he couldn't express. Saying more would only embarrass himself!
He stared at her, his Adam's apple moving.
Finally, he took out a pack of cigarettes from the glove compartment, an unopened pack. He skillfully opened it and lit one.
As the smoke filled his chest, the pain in his heart seemed to ease.
Frederick was somewhat addicted!
He smoked in the car without opening the window, and soon the car was filled with choking smoke.
Charlotte couldn't help but speak, "Frederick!"
He kissed her!
They had kissed many times, but never as intensely as this. Frederick seemed to be in a nightmare, and devouring her whole was his only way out.
Charlotte found it incredibly difficult to swallow and breathe.
Everywhere, it was all Frederick's scent!
She thought she was going to suffocate.
Frederick stopped, holding her forehead against his. He closed his eyes lightly, his voice tinged with pain. "Charlotte, how did we end up like this?"
Charlotte didn't know how to answer.
He didn't force her, just held her and breathed lightly.
Charlotte knew he was feeling bad. She whispered, "Frederick, I don't hate you. On the contrary, I'm grateful for some things you've done. But gratitude is gratitude, and feelings are feelings. I just don't want to force myself anymore!"
Frederick listened quietly.
These were considerate words, but they made his heart ache!
Just as the atmosphere was freezing, his phone rang. It was Patrick calling.
Patrick's voice was slightly tense. "Frederick, you need to come back quickly. Uma is not doing well."
