Chapter 613 Amara, Do You Still Love Me?
Ten minutes later, Amara pulled up outside the Hawkins Group building.
Before stepping out, she took a moment, glancing at the crystal pendant. Kingsley was clearly trying to remind her of their past. But the past was just that—past.
Since they reconnected, his behavior had been all over the place—hot and cold.
Amara grabbed her phone and called Kingsley. As soon as he picked up, he asked, "You here? Come on up!"
She leaned back in her seat, staring straight ahead. Her voice was low and husky. "Kingsley, I didn't want to do this over the phone, but I have to ask: after all these years, do you love me or hate me?"
There was a long silence on the other end.
Amara let out a faint smile. "You can't even lie to yourself, can you?"
When he first realized he had misunderstood her, he must have felt regret and tried to find her. But as time went on, Kingsley couldn't reignite those old feelings. He chose Hannah to marry, and whenever he thought of Amara, he probably felt a mix of regret and resentment for her leaving.
But she had her own struggles, raising Jesse on her own.
Kingsley finally broke the silence. "Let's talk in person."
Amara held back her emotions. "No need. I'll leave the key at the front desk. You can pick it up whenever. And have your driver return my car."
She hung up before he could respond.
In the lobby of the Hawkins Group, Amara left the key at the front desk and walked out. Just as she was about to hail a cab, a sports car pulled up beside her, and the window rolled down to reveal Caitlyn.
Caitlyn, with her delicate face hidden behind sunglasses, said, "Get in."
Without much thought, Amara got into Caitlyn's car.
Caitlyn stayed silent as they drove. After a while, Amara noticed the redness around Caitlyn's eyes and cautiously asked, "You and Landon?"
"We're done," Caitlyn replied bluntly.
Amara didn't know what to say. Any comfort would seem hollow since she was Landon's secretary.
Caitlyn gave a bitter smile. "You must think I'm an idiot! If he wanted to marry me, he would've done it by now! I've been wasting my time, competing with his other lovers! Amara, if the rival was..."
Amara cut her off gently, "After the breakup, just live well."
The sports car stopped by the roadside, and Caitlyn turned to Amara, her gaze intense.
"You know Landon's intentions, don't you? But you pretend not to and handle all his women for him? He's so good to you, haven't you felt anything for him?"
Amara smiled faintly. She had once experienced the best kind of love, even though she lost it later. So how could she be moved by Landon's care?
Caitlyn saw Amara's expression and guessed what she was thinking. She gritted her teeth. "Amara, you're really heartless!"
Amara stayed indifferent, not bothering to explain. "Am I?"
Caitlyn bit her nails, lost in thought for a moment. When she snapped back, she suddenly asked, "What about Kingsley? Don't you want Jesse to have a father?"
Amara just smiled faintly and didn't answer.
Caitlyn insisted Amara treat her to a meal, saying it was for the car fare.
Amara checked the time and realized it was indeed mealtime, so she agreed.
Caitlyn got herself thoroughly drunk, and Amara couldn't stop her. In the end, she had to help Caitlyn into the car and drive her home.
At Caitlyn's villa in the afternoon, Amara parked, and a servant came out to greet them. Seeing Caitlyn drunk, the servant looked worried. "Mr. Carter is here. What will he think if he sees Ms. Robinson like this?"
Amara thought, 'Caitlyn probably doesn't care anymore.' Then she said, "Help Caitlyn inside!"
Amara and the servant helped Caitlyn inside. Just as they placed her on the sofa, Landon slowly descended from the second floor, wearing a white bathrobe, looking like he had just taken a shower.
Caitlyn, with her seductive eyes, mumbled, "Why are you still here? We broke up; I won't be sleeping with you anymore."
The servant blushed and looked away.
Amara couldn't take it anymore. "Mr. Carter, I'll be leaving now."
Landon stopped her. "Wait a moment. There's a banquet at the Hawkins Mansion this week. I want you to accompany me."
Amara hesitated, wanting to refuse, but Landon added seriously, "The representative from Ascend Global Group, whom we've been wanting to collaborate with, will be there. Amara, this is business."
Amara composed herself. "Got it." With that, she left.
Caitlyn sobered up a bit and called out for Amara, but instead, she grabbed Landon.
He had a warm towel and lifted her onto his lap, gently wiping her down.
Caitlyn turned over and lay on the sofa, kicking off her high heels. She gazed at Landon with her hazy eyes, and after a while, she laughed softly. "You look so affectionate, Mr. Carter! If you're so good to me, why do you still go out looking for lovers?"
She traced his features with her slender fingers and asked, "Where do I rank in your heart?"
She was truly drunk, saying things she wouldn't normally dare to say.
"I guess I'm third! First is your first love, Charlotte, which I can accept! But who is Amara to you? She's practically Charlotte's daughter-in-law and even had a son with Kingsley! Landon, how can you still have feelings for her? I'm so fed up with you!"
Landon's face turned cold. "You're drunk. Stop talking nonsense!"
Caitlyn laughed coquettishly and turned over. "You know it best in your heart! Did I hit a nerve? No more pretending?"
Landon threw down the towel, picked her up, and started walking upstairs.
He said, "You just haven't been disciplined enough!"
Caitlyn kicked and struggled with her long legs, but in her half-drunken state, she was no match for Landon. Soon, he carried her into the master bedroom and threw her onto the soft bed.
Landon removed his bathrobe and covered her.
Both of them were angry, and in the broad daylight, their passion was rough and intense. By the end, Caitlyn was crying and cursing him as a bastard!
"I will tease you well," Landon whispered in her ear.
They had been together long enough for him to know how to please her. By the end of the afternoon, Caitlyn was thoroughly subdued. But no matter how intense the moment, it always cooled down eventually. After they finished, Caitlyn propped herself up and pulled out a long, thin cigarette from the bedside table.
She rarely smoked, but today she wanted one.
Her usually radiant face had turned cold and distant. She said to Landon, "Get out! I don't want to see you anymore! I'm tired of you!"
Landon's gaze deepened. "Are you really not going to regret this?"
He had rushed back in broad daylight to try to make up with her, but he hadn't expected her to be so resolute this time.
Landon wasn't one to drag things out.
He quickly adjusted his mood and smiled faintly. "Alright! We should part on good terms."
He wasn't a petty man.
Caitlyn was different from others. She came from a good background and had been with him for over two years. He had given her a $40 million villa and two top-tier sports cars.
She didn't need these things, but since he was willing to give, she took them. She would never have cried during a breakup and said she didn't need anything—that was what it meant to be naive and foolish. Amara was just that kind of woman!
After dealing with everything, Landon took a shower, got dressed, and prepared to leave.
Caitlyn lifted her chin. "Aren't you taking your things?"
Landon adjusted his shirt in the mirror and said indifferently, "You can handle them however you like. Throw them all away if you want."
Caitlyn nodded. "Alright!"
Landon quickly left. Before he did, he walked to the side of the bed and gave her a light kiss.
Amara did not return to the office.
She sat in a park all afternoon and only took a cab home at dusk.
The twilight settled at the horizon, and the air was filled with the scent of smoke, making the winter evening feel unusually warm.
Amara walked home from the entrance of her neighborhood.
Downstairs, she spotted a white Bentley—the same one she had driven to the Hawkins Group. She stood there for a moment, then walked closer and saw that no one was inside.
She figured Kingsley might be in her home.
Standing in the twilight for a bit, she finally headed upstairs. As soon as she opened the door, she heard Jesse's laughter and Kingsley's deep, pleasant voice coming from the master bedroom.
Hailey came over from the kitchen, still holding some utensils. She looked at Amara and said hesitantly, "Kingsley came over at noon! He's been playing with Jesse and having a great time."
Amara nodded and bent down to change her shoes.
Hailey, who was on her side, whispered, "What's going on? Did you and Kingsley have a fight?"
Amara didn't hide it. "A bit of a disagreement."
Hailey smiled slightly. "Young couples always fight! I can see that he cares about you. If he didn't, he wouldn't have put aside his work to wait for you all afternoon."
Hailey's attitude wasn't surprising.
With someone like Kingsley, who was willing to lower himself to come here and wait for half a day, any girl would be eager to have him. But not Amara. She had been in a relationship with Kingsley, so she knew him very well.
She lightly told Hailey, "He has a girlfriend now."
Hailey was stunned. After a long pause, she lowered her voice and asked Amara, "They haven't broken up yet? What does he mean by this? That's too bad!"
Amara smiled calmly and said gently, "I'll go in and take a look."
Hailey, afraid they might start arguing, specifically said, "No matter what, he is Jesse's father. For Jesse's sake, don't make a scene."
Amara agreed with Hailey.
She was not one to lose her temper, and over the years, she had learned to be patient. How could she argue with Kingsley in front of Jesse?
Amara walked to the bedroom door.
The house was warm, and Jesse was wearing a light blue onesie, sitting on the floor playing with building blocks. Kingsley was leaning against the foot of the bed, patiently accompanying him.
Amara watched for a while.
Kingsley suddenly looked up at her and asked, "How long do you plan to stand there? Didn't you not want to see me? Didn't you run away from the Hawkins Group without even meeting me?"
Amara walked in and squatted down next to Jesse, who looked up and kissed her on the cheek, calling out softly. Amara patted his little head, and Jesse grinned, showing a few baby teeth, as he called Kingsley "Daddy." Amara was a bit taken aback; she hadn't expected Kingsley to directly reveal his identity to Jesse. When she came to her senses, she asked him in a low voice, "Kingsley, what do you mean by this?"
"What do you think I mean? Aren't I his father?"
Amara knew he was doing this on purpose. She had taken his car and refused to meet him, so he was doing this out of childish spite.
She suppressed her temper and said, "I don't want to drive your car!"
Outside the door, Hailey had been eavesdropping.
She stood at the door and waved to Jesse, holding a small bowl with a fragrant treat inside. Jesse smelled the aroma and put down his toys to go out.
Amara wanted to follow, but Kingsley held her hand.
In that position, Kingsley pulled her close to him. He was leaning against the foot of the bed, and Amara ended up in his arms in a rather compromising position.
He lowered his head as if to kiss her.
Amara didn't dare to cry out. Her eyes reddened, and she said softly, "Kingsley, do you want to make me your mistress? What do you think you're doing? Have you thought about Jesse?"
He stared into her eyes. "Why didn't you come back to find me when you were pregnant?"
She knew he was looking for her. But she insisted on having the child alone, letting their misunderstanding drag on for three years. It wasn't until he got involved with Hannah that she appeared before him.
He did hate her so much that even though he loved her, he was unwilling to compromise easily.
Amara felt that they were about to argue again, and she didn't want to argue with him.
After breaking up, arguing seemed too intimate.
She gently struggled twice and retorted, "Do you think I could have come back then? And in what capacity? Do you think I could have married into the Hawkins Family after you said I wasn't fit to be your wife?"
After saying this, Amara felt a bit dazed.
She didn't want to offend him, so she lowered her stance. "It's really pointless! Kingsley, can we let each other go? You continue being your wealthy young man, and I'll wholeheartedly raise Jesse. It doesn't really conflict."
Kingsley was silent for a long time.
When Amara struggled again, he tightened his grip on her waist and gently stroked her lower back twice.
Perhaps he had matured, and those two strokes made her heart flutter, causing Amara to turn her face away.
Kingsley's gaze was deep. It was clear that his touch could ignite her desire. Her body might have wanted him, yet did she still have feelings for him?
Kingsley raised his hand to gently caress her face and asked her in a calm tone, "Amara, do you still love me? I want to hear the truth."
Amara shook her head. Over the years, she had thought about him, but love was no longer that important to her.
Outside, the sky was completely dark.
The warm yellow light in the bedroom softened his handsome face.
Kingsley just said softly, "I got it."
Then he became distant, stood up, and extended his hand to her. "Hailey should have dinner ready. Let's go eat."
Amara thought he would stay for dinner, but to her surprise, Kingsley put on his coat after going out. He went over to hug Jesse and said softly, "I'm leaving."
Jesse hugged his neck, clearly reluctant to let go.
Hailey ran out. "You've been here all afternoon. Why not stay for dinner?"
Kingsley smiled faintly. "I have something to do. Maybe next time."
He kissed Jesse again. "I'll come see you next time!" After saying that, he handed Jesse to Amara, changed his shoes, and left.
After Kingsley left, Jesse didn't have much appetite for dinner. While serving soup to Amara, Hailey said, "What did you talk about? He seemed quite affected."
Amara lowered her head and slowly drank the soup.
Hailey noticed her bad mood and said, "If you don't want to force yourself, then don't."
Amara smiled faintly.
Late at night, she lay in bed unable to sleep, with Jesse's warm body beside her.
Afraid of waking Jesse by turning over, she got up to get a glass of water in the living room. When she returned, she noticed that the white Bentley was still downstairs.
Amara lifted the curtain and quietly watched.
Kingsley was leaning against the car, his black coat blending into the night. He was looking up, slowly smoking a cigarette.
He was already handsome, and this scene made him look even more distinguished.
Amara took out her phone and called him.
Her voice was very soft. "Why haven't you left yet?"
Kingsley's voice was a bit hoarse. "Do you care about me? Didn't you draw a line with me? Didn't you say you didn't want anything from me, preferring to accept Landon's instead? Why do you care if I leave or not? My car isn't blocking your way, is it?"
He said a lot, full of jealousy.
Amara thought he was being childish! She was about to hang up when Kingsley suddenly said, "Put on a coat and come down. There's a document I forgot to give you."
Amara wanted to say she could get it tomorrow. But Kingsley said he would be on a business trip tomorrow!
In the end, Amara put on a coat and went downstairs to get the document. She thought it was about Jesse. When she reached Kingsley, he was still leaning against the car, his blue eyes brighter than the stars.
"Kingsley!" as soon as Amara spoke, he pulled her into his arms. He lowered his head and gently kissed her lips.
Amara struggled hard. Was he crazy?
But as soon as she moved, he held her tighter, and his kiss became wild and rough.
"Kingsley!" Her voice was broken.
In the cold night, he kissed her madly over and over again. Only when he was burning with desire did he stop and whisper in her ear, "I really want to kill you!"
