Chapter 647 Caitlyn, I'm Really Sorry!
Landon's eyes were intense. He looked at Amara and said slowly, "This is a marriage alliance! You know the Carter Group's situation better than anyone. This alliance can settle the internal disputes of the group ahead of time. Why not go through with it?"
"But Mr. Carter, are you happy? Is the Carter Group and all that power really what you want? When you get a moment to yourself, do you ever miss being out on the racetrack?"
Landon stared at her intensely, looking at this subordinate who was also like family. His eyes were bloodshot from sleepless nights, making him appear even more frightening. "Amara, do you know what you're saying?"
Amara pressed her lips tightly together, but finally, she said, "I just don't want you to miss your last chance. You're not young anymore; the chances of meeting true love in the future are slim! It's still not too late to cancel the wedding."
Her voice trembled on the last few words.
Landon glared at her with an intensity she had never seen before, as if he wanted to tear her apart, but Amara had no regrets. She felt that in this matter, she had somehow liberated herself.
But in the end, Landon spoke softly, "Amara, you know, this is just a part of me! I'm not the same person I was on the racetrack anymore."
After saying that, he left, brushing past Amara.
Amara stood there, unmoving for a long time.
"Amara." A gentle voice sounded, and when Amara looked up, it was Jennifer, Landon's mother.
Today was Landon's wedding day, and Jennifer was dressed elegantly and gracefully. She was nearly 70 years old, but well-maintained and still beautiful.
Jennifer said gently, "Amara, thank you for coming! You know, as a mother, I always hope my son is happy, even though he's over 40 and has his own opinions. Can I see Caitlyn?"
Amara snapped back to reality, quickly bowed, and said softly, "Caitlyn might be crying."
Then Amara added something quite honest. "Mr. Carter has been really good to her these past few years, and she's gotten a bit spoiled. If she offends you in any way, please don't mind."
Jennifer smiled. "How could I! I've never had the chance to meet her; Landon hid her too well."
Amara went over and knocked on the door. "Caitlyn, it's me. Please open the door!"
After a while, Caitlyn came to open the door.
Caitlyn looked terrible, far from the glamorous appearance she had when she arrived. Her hair was a mess, and her makeup was completely ruined, but from her facial features, one could still tell she was a beauty.
Jennifer was not angry at all; instead, she smiled and said, "I can tell you've had your fair share of fights with Landon."
Caitlyn's eyes widened. They had never met, but Caitlyn knew Jennifer, the famous writer who was also Landon's mother.
Caitlyn had often fantasized about being introduced to Jennifer by Landon many times. But he didn't mean that, only interested in physical intimacy. She never expected to meet her on his wedding day. How ironic!
Caitlyn stood there in a daze for a long time.
Amara, always rational, let Jennifer into the suite and made her some coffee.
After Caitlyn had freshened up a bit, she watched Amara make coffee for Jennifer and couldn't help but think that someone like Amara was probably the daughter-in-law Jennifer would prefer, while she only knew how to throw tantrums and fight with Landon.
Now that she and Landon had broken up, she had come to terms with it and decided to be gracious for once.
She sincerely apologized to Jennifer.
Seeing Jennifer coming over to her, Caitlyn felt a lump in her throat as she said, "You don't blame me?"
Jennifer shook her head. She truly felt sorry for Caitlyn, who was so young and had been with Landon for three years. Despite her good family background, she was willing to humble herself like that, which even Jennifer thought was not worth it.
Caitlyn sat down next to Jennifer who took off the gemstone bracelet she was wearing and gave it to Caitlyn. Judging by the quality and color of the gemstones, it was worth at least two million dollars. Caitlyn didn't dare accept it, not because of its value but because of its significance.
But Jennifer insisted on giving it to her.
Jennifer said, "I've worn this bracelet for years, always flawless! Caitlyn, may your future be the same!"
Caitlyn couldn't help but cry again.
Jennifer hugged her and said very gently, "I'm truly sorry! It's Landon's fault."
Caitlyn cried for a long time, and Jennifer was very patient and gentle.
Amara watched quietly, suddenly thinking of Kingsley and Jesse.
At night, Landon stood on the second floor of the villa, smoking. He, dressed in a white shirt and black dress pants, looked sharp and handsome, but there was no trace of joy on his face.
As he smoked, Landon couldn't help but think about Caitlyn. Amara had texted him earlier, saying they were back in Syeattel. She didn't mention Caitlyn, but he figured she must have cried a lot.
Suddenly, he felt a pair of delicate arms wrap around his waist.
Phoebe rested her head on his back, her voice soft. "Are you thinking about her?"
Landon patted her hand, his voice a bit rough. "No."
Phoebe knew he was lying but decided to let it slide. She reached over and put out the cigarette between his fingers. "Why don't you go take a shower? It's getting late."
Landon knew what she meant. This was their bridal suite, and behind them was the master bedroom.
They were both not young anymore. Even though it was a marriage of convenience, they still needed to have kids to produce a legitimate heir for the Carter Group.
This was his and Phoebe's agreement. If they wanted kids, they had to have sex.
Landon felt a wave of irritation but still tossed the cigarette butt into the trash and turned to give Phoebe a kiss. "Okay."
But after the kiss, he paused.
Phoebe had already showered, and with light makeup on, she looked beautiful, but Landon felt a disconcerting emptiness.
"What's wrong?" Phoebe asked with a gentle smile.
Landon stared at her for a long moment before saying, "Nothing. Your makeup looks great."
He went to take a shower, and after he finished, he immediately started preparing to have sex.
But despite usually having a strong sexual drive, Landon found himself unable to perform. Despite several attempts to reignite the spark, his body betrayed him. Defeated, Landon rolled to the side, covering his eyes with his hand as he exhaled a soft, weary breath. "I'm sorry; I'm just too tired today."
Phoebe, being a virgin and not that eager, gently lay beside him and said softly, "Maybe it's just that there's been too much going on lately. Let's try another day."
Landon lay there for a while, then pulled back the covers. "I'm going to take another shower."
In the bathroom, he still couldn't understand why this was happening. He had never experienced this before.
Even though he was over forty, his physical and mental stamina had always been good. At his best, he had made love to Caitlyn for most of the night, a total of six times, making her cry. Now, he couldn't even meet Phoebe's basic needs.
Landon felt quite pressured; no man would be indifferent to this. He thought it was just an accident.
Amara didn't get back to Syeattel until ten at night.
Jesse had already gone to bed with his beloved Snowflake, and Kingsley was downstairs in the hall, handling business while keeping an eye on the entrance.
When the car drove in, Kingsley got up and walked out.
In the night, two people got out of the car.
Kingsley's words were always quite sharp. With his hands in his pockets, he lit a cigarette and said, "Ms. Butler goes out and brings back a woman? Looking for a stepmother for Jesse?"
Amara was too angry to speak.
Caitlyn's eyes were swollen, and she glared at Kingsley. "If I had somewhere else to go, do you think I'd want to come here? I don't like seeing you at all."
Kingsley looked at Caitlyn, then at Amara whose eyes were also red, probably from crying together.
Kingsley snorted lightly. "Caitlyn, I'll only take you in for a week. Then you need to go back home."
Caitlyn didn't care for him. She looked at Amara. "How do you put up with him? He's so pretentious all day long, clearly loves you but acts like he doesn't care."
Kingsley kicked the lawn. "Caitlyn, you're standing on my property right now."
Caitlyn ignored him and walked towards the villa. "Which room does Jesse sleep in? I want to sleep with him."
Kingsley shouted after her, "In your state, you'll scare him! Pick any room on the third floor."
Caitlyn had already walked away.
Amara also wanted to leave, but Kingsley stopped her. "You've been gone for two days, no explanation?"
Amara bit her lip. "Explain what?"
Kingsley didn't say anything, his blue eyes fixed on her. Suddenly, he extended his arm and pulled her into his embrace. Her slender waist fit perfectly in his arms, and he gently caressed her, a mix of anger and teasing. "Don't you think it's a bit too formal to dress like this for Landon's wedding?"
Amara looked down at her clothes.
The outfit accentuated her figure.
Amara said softly, "It's Caitlyn's clothes."
Kingsley pressed her against the car, his hand slipping under her clothes, murmuring, "So it's someone else's clothes. Now I just want to take them off."
Amara thought he was such a bastard.
