Chapter 428 Andrew, Chloe is pregnant!
Chloe was kinda gullible, and she bought it.
Frederick helped her to the car while she was yakking with Charlotte.
They were always tight, and their bond didn't get all messed up because of Andrew. That gave Charlotte some peace, so she always treated Chloe with extra TLC.
Frederick came back.
He tossed the car keys to his sis, "From now on, let the driver take you when you go out!"
Chloe gave a small smile, "The baby's just a little bump right now!"
"That's exactly why it's risky!"
Chloe nodded. Frederick wanted to drive her back himself, but he couldn't leave Charlotte hanging.
Chloe hung around for a bit before heading out.
She was about to bounce, but then she remembered Laura was out of some meds, and the doc was in the inpatient department today.
She thought about it and made a call.
The VIP section of the surgical inpatient department was super quiet.
Chloe, being light on her feet, quickly got off the elevator. Just as she was about to step out, she froze.
Two people were standing at the elevator entrance—Andrew and Nathan's wife.
Andrew was in a hospital gown, looking way thinner, his face pale, like he'd been through the wringer.
After all, he was still Gavin's dad, and Chloe didn't want to kick him while he was down.
She asked softly, "You sick?"
He'd been busy before, and there were times he was hospitalized for heavy drinking, so she didn't think much of it.
Andrew had just had surgery a few days ago and could barely walk. He was feeling cooped up in the ward and wanted to stretch his legs, not expecting to run into Chloe.
She looked good, full of life.
Andrew thought, 'Maybe breaking up was the right call; at least one of us is happy.'
He did miss her; his eyes lingered on her face for a while.
Then, he gave a faint smile, "Old ailment!"
Amanda, standing next to him, wanted to say something, but Andrew softly said, "Let's head back to the ward!"
Amanda didn't move for a bit.
Andrew raised his voice, "Let's go back!"
Chloe watched him walk away, feeling kinda sad.
How did it get to this point between them?
Andrew walked faster and faster. Despite the pain, he didn't stop. By the time he got to the ward, he was out of breath.
Adeline was inside.
She was cutting fruit, half for Andrew, and half to send to Charlotte.
Seeing Andrew come back, she was surprised.
"Didn't you say you were going for a walk? Why are you back so soon?" Then Adeline went up to help Andrew.
Andrew was hurting all over.
Lying down on the bed, even that simple move felt like torture.
He stared at the ceiling, zoning out.
He was good at reading people and situations. He also knew his weird behavior was just because he couldn't accept losing Chloe.
Such a pure and beautiful person, he had lost her.
Andrew had never felt this low and he stayed silent.
Adeline couldn't take it anymore. She pulled Amanda aside and whispered, "What's up with him?"
Amanda glanced at Andrew quietly.
She whispered to Adeline, "He ran into Chloe! He probably misses her a lot."
Adeline was quiet.
She slowly sat down, gently stroking the chair, quietly looking outside.
Downstairs was bustling.
Adeline spoke softly, "I've got two kids. One was too emotional and passed away early, leaving Andrew. He's always been a rockstar, handling everything like a pro since he was young. Never thought he'd mess up in love, but he wrecked this relationship himself! He messed up his life and a good girl's too."
Amanda wiped her tears. She was deeply bummed out, weighed down by too many worries.
Andrew sank into a funk. A week later, the doc told Adeline, "Mr. Devereux's numbers have tanked. If he keeps this up, it's gonna get real bad!"
Adeline was upset. That night, she sat by Andrew's bedside all night.
Andrew had a fever, and in his haze, he saw Adeline's face.
He felt super guilty.
With the lights off, Adeline spoke softly, "I shouldn't have told you! But how can you go on like this? If you're gone, who will Gavin and the unborn kid rely on? Do you really want Chloe to struggle raising two kids?"
"Mom! What are you talking about?"
Adeline shed tears. She held Andrew's hand, "Chloe is pregnant! Do the math yourself!"
In the darkness, Andrew didn't move for a long time, tears welling up in his eyes.
He remembered that one time they were intimate without any protection. Then, Chloe got pregnant.
Andrew's voice trembled slightly, "She..."
Adeline's voice suddenly got stern, "Andrew, if you're truly a Devereux and still care for her, then act like a man! You were so tough before; how can you just lie in bed now?"
"I don't want you to become like this. And you must keep your illness a secret."
"You have to step up as a father. Whether Chloe accepts you or not is a matter for later! Get better to see the child born. How will you face her otherwise?"
Andrew lay there, silently crying.
He remembered seeing her that day, she saw him hospitalized and still showed concern for him.
After a long time, Andrew responded, "I get it!"
After that, they stayed quiet.
In the morning.
The ward was empty. Adeline and Amanda were freaking out. Nathan rushed over from the company, and after asking in detail, he was stunned, "He must have gone to see Chloe!"
Adeline doubted, "How could Andrew go out in such poor health?"
Adeline sneered, "Now that he knows Chloe's pregnant with his kid, nothing could stop him from getting there!"
Adeline was spot on.
Andrew changed his clothes, dragged his body, hailed a cab, and was drenched in cold sweat by the time he got in. He gave the address. The driver smiled, "That's a nice place; all rich folks live there."
Half an hour later, the car stopped.
Andrew supported himself, went upstairs, and rang the doorbell.
Chloe was at home.
She was about to take Gavin out when she heard the doorbell and went to open the door. She was stunned when she saw who it was.
Why was Andrew here?
Andrew's gaze was intense, he looked at her, trying hard not to stare at her belly.
He came here just to see her, and he didn't want to cause her any trouble.
At this moment, Gavin came over, happy to see him, called out "Daddy," and hugged his leg. But Andrew was in so much pain he was drenched in sweat.
Chloe, slightly stunned, bent down and told Gavin, "Daddy is not feeling well!"
Gavin let go, looking up. His short golden hair was indescribably cute.
