Chapter 350 Ethan Passed Away (Part 2)
That night, Charlotte got a call from Ethan's sister, Jenny, who was bawling her eyes out. "Charlotte, Ethan's not gonna make it! Can you come see him one last time?"
Charlotte was stunned for a moment.
The last time she saw Ethan was at the school anniversary.
Jenny sobbed, "He had a car accident! He's in critical condition, but he kept calling your name. He's holding the necklace he gave you."
The phone slipped from Charlotte's hand.
Late at night, she showed up at the hospital, dressed in black.
Ethan couldn't hold on for her.
A white cloth covered his face.
The Cooper family was in pieces. Despite Ethan's flaws, he was always the backbone of the Cooper Group, and now he was just... gone.
When Charlotte arrived, Jenny broke down even more. "Ethan, Charlotte's here!"
Charlotte walked over slowly.
Under the harsh white light, she gently lifted the cloth. Ethan's face was cleaned up, looking pale but still the same.
Charlotte softly touched his face and whispered, "Ethan, our fights were over a long time ago. I haven't blamed you for ages! Why did you have to go and do this?"
He had the accident near her place.
When the ambulance got there, he was clutching the necklace.
Charlotte felt a whirlwind of emotions.
She had loved Ethan and hated him deeply, but all those feelings would disappear with Ethan's death. There would be no more Ethan in this world.
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
She slowly covered him back up and softly said, "Goodbye, Ethan."
Charlotte didn't stick around.
In the hallway, Jenny caught up with her. "Charlotte!"
Charlotte turned around.
Jenny slowly approached, her voice raw from crying. "Before Ethan passed, he asked me to give you two things! He said he wanted you to have them."
They were a necklace and a key.
Charlotte took them silently.
Jenny sniffled and went on, "Charlotte, Daisy wanted me to apologize to you. She said if she had convinced Ethan back then, maybe you and Ethan could've been really happy! He really loved you! Charlotte, my biggest fear is that you won't believe he ever loved you. He hasn't been doing well all these years!"
Charlotte hadn't been doing well either.
Who didn't remember their first love?
And he met such a tragic end.
Charlotte got into the car. Jared, seeing her expression, softly asked, "Charlotte, are we heading home now?"
Charlotte looked down.
In her hand was the key.
She softly said, "I want to go there."
Jared didn't ask any more questions and drove straight to an old neighborhood in the east of the city. Thoughtfully, he waited in the car.
Charlotte went up alone.
Years ago, when the Cooper family hit rock bottom, they crashed here, an 800-square-foot spot that squeezed in the whole clan.
Back then, Charlotte used to swing by to cook for Ethan.
He was always swamped.
When he got back, she'd often be passed out at the dining table.
This place was packed with all her teenage memories.
She opened the door, and it looked pretty much the same, with a few new touches. Someone clearly came by to clean regularly, and there was even a plate of washed fruit on the table.
A big picture hung on the wall. It was a photo of them back in college.
A 20-something Charlotte confessing to Ethan.
On the bedside table in the bedroom, there were more photos of them.
Charlotte stood there quietly for a bit, then walked to the kitchen and opened the fridge. It was stocked with fruits and veggies. She calmly took some out and whipped up a simple meal of two dishes and a soup, Ethan's favorites.
She set them on the dining table.
Charlotte thought that if people have souls, he'd remember to come back for a meal!
When she left, she left the key behind.
She wasn't coming back again!
As she went downstairs, the night wind hit her face, cold and sharp.
Charlotte didn't know if they would've been happy if he hadn't betrayed her back then, but she knew that all choices were final. She had loved Ethan, but after his death, the only thing she could do for him was to cook a meal.
Downstairs, it was chaos.
Tina was there, along with several Cooper family members. Jenny, especially, was clinging to Tina and crying, "Ethan is dead. Tina, what more do you want?"
Tina looked wrecked. She was so worked up that her chest heaved, staring at Charlotte. "He died because of you! He came to me to plead for you! After leaving, he went to see you. Until his death, he was thinking of you. He kept this place spotless, coming to clean every week and waiting for you! Charlotte, did you ever think of him?"
Tina was desperate and jealous.
She seemed to have lost it, and people around her were holding her back.
Charlotte was super calm. "I'm married."
Ethan was dead.
She might feel a bit sad, but she couldn't feel the same way. What was missed was missed, not to mention what Ethan had done to the Russell family.
Jared opened the car door for her.
Charlotte got in, her nose slightly red, and softly said, "Let's go."
The black car slowly drove away.
Tina was still causing a scene. She couldn't wrap her head around it. Even though she was the one who was intimate with Ethan, he still thought of Charlotte. The Cooper family gave Ethan's most cherished belongings to Charlotte.
The rain picked up.
Tina knelt on the ground, crying her heart out.
