Chapter 623 You Don't Like Me, You Just Want to Possess Me!

Amara hung up the phone and sat alone in her office, lost in thought for a bit. Then she booked a 2 PM flight to Bostan.

A knock on the door broke her reverie, and Mia walked in.

Amara grabbed a few folders. "These are the key project materials from the past six months. Give them to Vice President Mr. Graves. Mr. Carter said he's taking over the company's business from now on."

Mia nodded and then asked softly, "Amara, are you going to Bostan?"

Amara was a bit surprised but then gave a faint smile and nodded.

Mia hesitated for a moment but eventually left with the materials.

After she left, Amara leaned back in her chair and spun around a few times. She thought of Kingsley. New Year's was just over a month away. They had just patched things up, and he definitely wouldn't want her to leave Syeattel. Honestly, Amara wasn't sure if she would be back before New Year's.

But Landon had been a great mentor to her; she couldn't just leave him hanging.

Amara bit her lip and dialed Kingsley's number.

In his top-floor CEO office, Kingsley stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out over Syeattel.

The phone on his desk rang again and again. He figured it was Amara but didn't answer.

After a few more rings, there was a knock on the office door, and Rebecca's voice came through. "Mr. Hawkins, can you take Amara's call now?"

The door opened, showing Kingsley's serious profile.

Rebecca was puzzled. There had been an important meeting that morning, but Kingsley had canceled it to meet an important guest. After that, he had been alone in his office, seemingly waiting for something.

Kingsley turned around, his eyes landing on the phone in Rebecca's hand.

He said calmly, "I'll call her back."

Rebecca couldn't figure out what was going on between them. She just said a few words to Amara, then hung up and left.

Kingsley slowly walked to his desk.

He picked up the phone, which showed five missed calls, all from Amara. He pressed the button to call her back, and Amara answered almost immediately. "Were you in a meeting?"

Kingsley replied calmly, "Yeah."

After a moment of silence, Amara said softly, "I might have to go on a business trip for a while."

"To Bostan?"

Amara wasn't surprised he knew because the death of the Carter Group's president was already public knowledge in the industry. She softened her voice, hoping he wouldn't be upset. "I'll come back as soon as I'm done."

Kingsley smiled faintly. "Have you packed? If you have, come by my place."

He hung up after saying that.

On the other end, Amara held her phone, feeling a bit dazed. She could tell Kingsley was upset. He didn't want her to go to Bostan.

But she had to go, no matter what.

Putting aside her feelings, it was also about professional ethics.

Amara cared about Kingsley. She packed up and took a cab to the Hawkins Group. Rebecca was already waiting on the first floor when she arrived. Walking side by side, Rebecca asked softly, "Mr. Hawkins doesn't look happy. Did you two have a fight again?"

Amara shook her head and said, "No."

But they might have a fight soon.

Rebecca sighed in relief and led her to the CEO's office. After bringing Amara in, she didn't bother with water, giving them some private space.

Amara closed the door.

Kingsley was sitting on the sofa working, a laptop on his lap. He looked up at her when he heard the door close. "Do you really have to go?"

Amara leaned against the door.

She pondered for a moment and asked softly, "Do you really not want me to go?"

Kingsley kept his eyes on her. After a moment, he closed the laptop and gently tossed a manila envelope onto the table in front of him, lifting his chin slightly. "Look at this and then decide."

Amara was puzzled.

But she still sat down across from him and opened the envelope. In just two seconds, her face turned pale.

[The Hawkins Group and The Ascend Global Group Cooperation Contract]

She quickly scanned through it and looked up, her eyes full of disbelief. She even trembled as she asked, "When did you sign this with the Ascend Global Group?"

Kingsley calmly said, "An hour ago. Amara, the Hawkins Group values its cooperation with the Ascend Global Group. This project needs someone to lead the team. If you leave the Carter Group and join the Hawkins Group, this project will be yours to lead. You'll have the career and status you want."

Amara was still in shock.

Her eyes fell on the title. Listening to Kingsley's words, she knew that in business, betraying friends was common. Business was ruthless, especially for a project worth hundreds of billions of dollars.

She trembled as she spoke, "Mr. Carter has been a great mentor to me. He needs me by his side now. If I take the project the Carter Group lost to build my career, Kingsley, do you think that's right?"

Kingsley quietly watched her, noticing her emotional distress.

He asked expressionlessly, "So what do you think is appropriate? Should I let you stay by his side to comfort him in his grief, or let you continue to be with him day and night, or every time he needs something, you go to him because of his kindness to you?"

Amara looked at him with a gaze that felt almost unfamiliar.

She spoke very softly, "What do you mean?"

Kingsley leaned in, grabbing her slender wrist. He whispered in her ear, "You know he has feelings for you and my mother. You are my girlfriend and will be my wife. Is it appropriate for you to stay by his side?"

Amara felt a sharp pain in her heart.

She slightly tilted her head up, looking at him. He was indeed very attractive and powerful, but he was also a jerk! How was what he was saying now any different from when he said she wasn't fit to be his wife? Just because she worked by Landon's side, he had labeled her in his mind.

He didn't respect her at all and thought everything she had today was because of her relationship with Landon, so he wouldn't allow her to have any contact with Landon, even if Landon was in a difficult situation.

Amara trembled as she spoke, "It's just a job! Kingsley, if you feel uncomfortable with me being by Landon's side, I can leave the Carter Group after this period is over and I've gotten what I deserve. But at this moment, I can't betray him."

Kingsley let go of her.

His long fingers gently flipped through the contract as he said indifferently, "Power and status can't keep you? Amara, the Carter Group's issues won't settle down in less than six months."

Amara was stunned. On her way here, she had thought he would be angry and opposed. In the car, she had considered making some concessions, but she hadn't expected Kingsley to go this far. She finally understood how much he cared about what he had heard that night at the club. Perhaps the brief sweetness had confused her, but deep down, he had never truly trusted her. He thought there was some ambiguous relationship between her and Landon.

Amara lowered her eyes.

She carefully thought about what she wanted and the impact of breaking up with Kingsley on Jesse. She thought for about five minutes, during which Kingsley kept watching her.

Finally, Amara looked up. Her eyes were somewhat similar to that night, filled with a sense of despair. Her voice was hoarse as she spoke, "This project is something I've spent nearly half a year following up on. No one has more feelings for it than I do. But Kingsley, you took it away in just an hour, making all my hard work for nothing. You might really like me, but I've said before, if we are to be together, you must first learn to respect me and treat me as an equal. You're used to being high and mighty. You only care about Landon's presence, but haven't I also been hurt by Caitlyn and Hannah's appearances?"

Kingsley's thin lips pressed together. "Think about it."

Amara gently shook her head. "No need! Mr. Hawkins, you haven't changed at all! In your heart, I've always been just a pet for your amusement and happiness. You never cared about what I think or the people I care about. You just want my world to revolve around you, staying home to have more children, according to your vision of happiness. But that's not what I want! I can live without you, but during my toughest times, it was Mr. Carter who took me in."

Kingsley looked at her. "So you've decided to go?"

Amara stood up. "Yes! I have to go! And we are not suitable for each other. Let's end our relationship!" she said and walked straight to the door.

As Amara's hand touched the doorknob, Kingsley's voice sounded behind her. "Amara, are you serious?"

Her fingers gripped the doorknob tightly, her chin slightly raised to keep from crying. She replied softly, "Yes! We are just not the same kind of people."

Amara felt a mix of regret and relief, believing it was better their relationship ended. They were both deeply disappointed in each other, and if he had understood her better, he wouldn't have been so domineering.

She choked up, "I'll go get Jesse back! We'll talk about Jesse's matters when I return."

Amara finally left.

She didn't accept his arrangement. She chose to return to Landon's side and continue her own life.

Kingsley sat quietly, his expression dark and unclear.

Amara went to the Hawkins Mansion to take Jesse away, and Frederick and Charlotte had no reason to stop her.

After Amara left, Frederick called and scolded Kingsley, "You two were all lovey-dovey yesterday, and today you made her cry? Amara came over with red eyes. Kingsley, what did you do?"

Kingsley was in a bad mood and hung up after a few perfunctory responses.

No one knew how much he cared about Landon.

If it weren't for what he heard at the club, he wouldn't have cared so much. But Landon had clearly expressed his intentions towards Amara, and now she was willing to fly to Bostan for Landon, even if it meant breaking up with him.

Amara said that he was still the same. Indeed, he hadn't changed, but she had!

Amara took Jesse back to the small apartment.

Hailey was making food and was startled to see her return with Jesse. "Why are you back at this time? Did Jesse not get used to staying at his grandparents' house?"

Before she could finish asking, she noticed Amara's red eyes and said, "What happened?"
