Chapter 283 I Haven't Been in Touch with Her
The night wind was howling.
Charlotte rocked a red dress, topped with a fancy coat that hugged her tight.
Behind her, a slick, high-end car gleamed.
Her bling? Totally top-shelf.
The chick, Brenda, was living large on Frederick's dime, but she was as ungrateful as they come. Brenda's lips quivered as she said, "Mrs. Hawkins, you can't treat Mr. Hawkins like that!"
Charlotte adjusted her coat with a smirk. "Oh really? How I treat my hubby is none of your business!"
Brenda bit her lip, looking all innocent like a scared bunny. "You're his wife. You shouldn't be out there, making him look bad."
Charlotte let out a cold laugh. "What? Did my husband whine to you? Did he say having a wife like me makes his life a living hell?"
Brenda tried to speak.
Charlotte's tone turned icy. "Think twice before you lie!"
She stepped closer, staring Brenda down. "If I were you, I'd be grateful for what I have instead of dreaming about stealing someone else's man."
Brenda's lips trembled. "You dug into my past?"
Charlotte patted her coat. Handling a girl like this was a piece of cake now.
But she still showed some mercy, for Frederick's sake.
Brenda felt humiliated. "Mrs. Hawkins, you're too overbearing."
She added, "Mr. Hawkins won't like a woman like you."
Charlotte's smile was faint. "Oh yeah? What kind of woman do you think he'd prefer? One who cheats and sleeps around, or one who scams money for smokes and drinks?"
Charlotte knew Frederick inside out.
Back in the day, he was into Katherine's fiery spirit.
As he got older, he liked obedient women, especially those who were submissive in bed, though he didn't mind a bit of excitement now and then.
Frederick's standards were always sky-high.
Charlotte's smile faded. "Brenda, this is your last warning. Stay away from me and my family, including Frederick. My patience is running thin."
With that, she signaled Jared to open the car door.
Jared showed her full respect, bowing to open the door. His humble act made Charlotte both mad and amused, and she shot him a glare.
Several bodyguards got into other cars.
A few luxury rides rolled out one after another.
Brenda, in her thin clothes, stood shivering in the night.
She had miscalculated.
She thought a guy like Frederick wouldn't resist a young girl's charm and would easily sleep with her.
But not only did he not sleep with her, it was even hard to get a meeting.
She could only find Charlotte.
Charlotte was sharper than she had imagined. No matter how she provoked her, Charlotte didn't bite back.
If Charlotte didn't retaliate, how could she play the victim and make Frederick feel sorry for her?
Charlotte sat in the car, silent.
She felt a bit grossed out.
Jared said, "With Frederick's looks and charm, it's no surprise women throw themselves at him, but this girl is too shameless!"
Charlotte turned her face away and said softly, "She's Katherine's sister."
These sisters really shared the same good genes.
Jared was speechless for a moment before saying, "That's bad! Then Frederick..."
Charlotte felt a bit bitter.
She whispered, "He knows Katherine hurt us, but so what? He didn't go through it himself; he can't get it."
That's why he easily helped Brenda.
Charlotte was in a foul mood and didn't say much more.
Half an hour later, the car pulled up in front of Hawkins Mansion. Charlotte got out and saw someone standing outside.
It was Frederick.
Charlotte gently adjusted her coat and whispered, "You're back from your trip?"
They hadn't seen each other for a week.
Frederick responded with a faint "hmm."
He caught the faint scent of red wine on her, mixed with her perfume, creating a unique feminine fragrance.
It was very appealing.
To him, Charlotte was like a ripe peach, very tempting.
But her face was a bit pale, and he couldn't help but show concern. "If you can't handle your liquor, don't drink. With your status, you don't need to socialize."
Charlotte smiled lightly and closed the car door.
Jared got out and said, "Charlotte had a blast socializing, but she ran into someone on the way back, which soured her mood."
Charlotte held her forehead, pretending to be annoyed. "Stop talking."
She started to walk away.
Frederick grabbed her hand. "What happened?"
"Nothing; just some nobody."
Jared chimed in, "It was some chick named Brenda. She kept whining about how she felt sorry for you and that Charlotte was always out in public, not giving a damn about her husband."
Frederick looked shocked.
Brenda had gone after Charlotte again?
He spoke softly, "I haven't been in touch with her."
Charlotte lowered her eyes and smirked. "Your pity for her is contact. Otherwise, why would she keep bugging me? Frederick, I don't care if you still think about Katherine or feel sorry for her. I'm telling you, if she messes with my family, I'll break her legs."
With that, she stormed off towards the villa.
No way was she letting another Katherine situation happen.
Frederick watched her walk away, feeling her anger. He pulled out a cigarette and lit it.
Jared came over, all cheeky, and asked for one too.
The two smoked together.
After a bit, Frederick asked casually, "Has she always been this fiery?"
Jared chuckled mysteriously. "Oh yeah, she’s always had that spark! You and Charlotte broke up and got back together so many times. Each time, it was you who couldn't resist going back to her, and eventually, you had a kid and got hitched."
Was it always him who made the first move?
Frederick exhaled smoke slowly.
Jared suddenly got serious. "Charlotte loves you a lot too. Those months when you were losing your memory, it was really tough on her."
Thinking about those times, Jared couldn't say more and waved his hand as he left.
Frederick finished his cigarette and slowly walked into the hall.
Inside, the vibe was warm and happy.
Andrew had come over from Copenhagen, saying he was there to see the kids, but everyone knew he was really there to see Chloe.
The two had been in a will-they-won't-they thing for over half a year.
When Charlotte saw Andrew, she went over and gave him a light hug. "Andrew, you're here."
Andrew touched her face and then said to Patrick, "She drank quite a bit."
Patrick laughed. "Our Charlotte is quite the social butterfly now. Among women, she’s got a lot of clout."
He then teased Laura, "Isn't that right?"
Laura wasn’t mad at Charlotte.
She doted on Charlotte even more, personally instructing the servants to bring her some hangover soup, and whispered, "You should drink less in the future; Kingsley is still breastfeeding."
Charlotte nodded obediently. "Okay; don’t listen to Dad’s nonsense."
Patrick was in high spirits and had a card table set up, insisting on playing cards.
Charlotte changed her clothes and came downstairs to find Patrick, Frederick, and Andrew already seated at the table.
Frederick's gaze was intense.
When he came in earlier, he had seen Andrew touch her face. Even though he knew Andrew was her uncle, he was still too young and handsome.
Charlotte had just sat down.
Patrick tossed a check over, $5 million.
He laughed, "It’s a gift for you. Lola and Kingsley both got some, but Frederick didn’t. I will always stand by your side."
Charlotte accepted it graciously.
Frederick looked at her fresh, makeup-free face, finding her particularly endearing. He deliberately said softly, "Charlotte, give me some money."
Charlotte was picking up her cards and replied coldly, "I don’t manage your money. I have none to give you."
Frederick took out a wallet from his pocket and handed it to her. "From now on, you manage it!"
This blatant flirting made the elders blush.
Charlotte pretended not to care and opened his wallet, finding a photo inside.
It was a picture of her with Lola and Kingsley.
In the mesh pocket, there was also a small square item.
Frederick spoke softly, sounding quite aggrieved, "I’ve had it in there for half a month but haven’t used it once."
He was really shameless.
Charlotte's face heated up. She threw the wallet back at him. "Take care of it yourself!"
She understood that he was trying to please her, probably because Brenda had caused trouble and he felt embarrassed.
Charlotte felt a bit unhappy.
What did this mean?
He had Katherine in his heart, so what did he think of Brenda?
A naive girl who had taken the wrong path?
The whole evening, she was lukewarm. Frederick gave her many cards, and in the end, Charlotte won a lot of money, making even Patrick jealous and exclaim that Frederick was useless.
At midnight, the clock struck twelve.
Frederick pushed his cards away. "Let's call it a night. I've lost a lot of money."
He looked at Charlotte. "Shall we go upstairs to rest?"
Charlotte knew he had something to say and was willing to give him a chance, so she smiled faintly. "I am a bit tired. Dad, Andrew, you should rest early too."
