Chapter 651 I Won't Be This Humble Anymore
At night, Jesse hit the sack early.
Jesse couldn't stop thinking about Caitlyn. Hugging a small pillow and drifting off, he kept murmuring her name, which tugged at Amara's heartstrings.
Everyone seemed to have gotten used to Caitlyn being around.
Amara tucked Jesse in.
The door creaked open, and Nicole, in her pajamas, tiptoed in and whispered, "Is Jesse asleep?"
She was super close to Amara, leaning lightly against her leg.
Amara gently stroked her smooth hair, "Jesse's almost out."
Nicole nodded and didn't utter another word, fearing she might wake him.
After a bit, Jesse was out cold.
Amara took Nicole to the living room. Nicole pulled out her homework from behind her back and asked Amara for help with a problem she couldn't crack.
Math had never been her strong suit. She scrutinized the elementary school problem, trying to coax her brain into revealing the solution, but still couldn't figure it out and stayed quiet.
Nicole's eyes were wide and innocent. "Aunt Amara, do you not know how to do it?"
Amara definitely didn't want to admit it.
Just then, Kingsley walked in. Seeing Amara struggling with the math book, he knew what was up. With an easy smile, he moved to the opposite sofa and took the homework from her, his eyes scanning the problem briefly before showing Nicole the solution to solve it.
Nicole was thrilled. "Thank you, Mr. Hawkins!"
Kingsley liked Nicole a lot too. He patted her shoulder. "It's late, you should hit the hay! Tomorrow, I'll take you and Jesse to the Hawkins Mansion to play."
Nicole was so excited her face turned red as she dashed off to her bedroom. Once she disappeared behind the bedroom door, Kingsley closed it gently and returned to the living room. When he saw Amara still staring at the math problem, he couldn't help but tap her on the head. "With your smarts, how'd you get into college?"
"I'm good at liberal arts," Amara said, a bit defensively.
Kingsley just smiled and asked, "Is Jesse asleep?"
Amara replied softly, "Yeah."
She thought he might suggest getting intimate, as they hadn't been physically close since that heated moment in the car despite living together. Kingsley had brought it up a few times, but nothing happened.
However, this time, he simply nodded and left without a word, leaving Amara alone, wondering if he was doing it on purpose. That time in the car, he showed her the pleasure of being together. After that, he hadn't made a move for a long time.
But Amara didn't have much time to dwell on their private matters. She was now worried about how to tell Landon about Caitlyn. After all, Landon was married, and some things were just off-limits once they were over.
At ten o'clock at night, Amara started typing up an email, a performance report for this period, and the results were stellar. At the end, she added a line: [Mrs. Robinson came to take Caitlyn away and even hit her! Mr. Carter, I might not be able to take care of her anymore!]
Amara stared at that sentence for a long time. She figured if Landon still cared, he'd definitely do something about it.
Meanwhile, in Boston, Landon got home from work, passed by the fancy villa, and asked the servant, "Why are the lights upstairs off? Where's Phoebe?"
The servant looked a bit nervous. "Mrs. Carter went out for coffee!"
Landon checked the time, smiling calmly. "At this hour, she's still out for coffee?"
He didn't press further, knowing this servant was loyal to Phoebe and wouldn't spill the beans.
Landon didn't really care if Phoebe was home; he actually felt more relaxed when she wasn't around. They had never successfully been intimate.
Thinking it was his problem, he tested his sexual ability with other women but never went through with it. His physiological functions were fine; he just didn't want to be with Phoebe.
As he slowly went upstairs, Landon raised his hand to cover his forehead, lost in thought. Phoebe was beautiful and had a great figure, but he just couldn't get into it. When he opened the bedroom door, he understood: it was Caitlyn and her tears.
Thinking of Caitlyn, Landon felt a bit agitated. He pulled off his tie, tossed it aside, and lay down on the luxurious bed, wanting only to rest.
At that moment, he missed the days in Seattle immensely.
Compared to now, his life back then was so much more exciting. Now, it was just endless work and Phoebe, who even wore makeup to bed. He felt like he was living with a mask on, with no sense of freshness at all.
Landon took out a cigarette and lit it. After smoking half of it, he got an email. He opened it casually and saw it was from Amara. Why was Amara sending a work report at this hour again?
He shook his head with a bemused smile, thinking about possibly giving her a raise for her dedication. However, as his eyes skimmed down to the side note, his heart skipped a beat. He saw Amara's side note: something had happened at Caitlyn's home.
After reading for a bit, Landon called Amara. He asked directly, "What happened with the Robinson Family? Did her mother hit her?"
Amara had been waiting for his call. She said, "Yes! And Caitlyn's face is swollen! Her father is seriously ill in bed, and the family business needs someone to manage it. I heard from Kingsley that the Robinson Family isn't doing well. Mr. Carter, Caitlyn might be under a lot of pressure."
Hearing this, Landon felt his heart tighten. He said in a low voice, "I got it."
Amara couldn't gauge his intentions, but Landon had already hung up.
Landon stared blankly at the remaining half of his cigarette, his mind filled with images of Caitlyn being beaten.
Caitlyn, being so delicate, surely couldn't bear the pain. Just thinking about it made him feel unbearable!
It took Landon two minutes to decide to go to Seattle.
Even though the Carter Group headquarters was unstable and still needed his management, at this moment, he felt he had to go to Seattle.
Of course, there were no flights at night, so he decided to drive. It would take about 8 hours, and he would arrive in the early morning.
As he went downstairs, Phoebe happened to return, looking lovely in her elegant outfit and soft, beautiful makeup.
She exuded a faint scent of perfume and seemed to be in a good mood. Seeing Landon with his coat, she couldn't help but ask, "Are you going out this late?"
Landon's gaze lingered for a moment. He keenly noticed a faint red mark on Phoebe's neck, as if it had just been kissed. Seeing her happy expression, Landon understood.
Apart from feeling slightly displeased, he didn't have many thoughts. He even felt relieved, thinking it was good she found joy elsewhere since he couldn't fulfill her sexually.
He said in a calm tone, "I need to go out for a couple of days."
Phoebe's expression became noticeably more cheerful. Landon's lips curled into a smile, and he quickened his pace, walking out of the villa.
Phoebe watched his back, about to go upstairs when the servant appeared and gently reminded her, "Mrs. Carter, you shouldn't come back so late. When Mr. Carter asked about you, I didn't know what to say."
Phoebe bit her lip. "Don't mess this up!"
She pulled out a stack of money from her purse, asking the servant to cover for her.
At eight in the morning, a black Range Rover was parked in the hospital parking lot.
Landon sat in the car, smoking to stay awake. As he slowly exhaled smoke rings, he picked up his phone and called Caitlyn. After a few rings, it was answered, and Caitlyn's voice was very cold. "Why are you calling? Mr. Carter, aren't you married? We cut ties a long time ago."
Before Landon could speak, Caitlyn hung up.
Landon didn't call back. Instead, he sat there in the stillness of his car, slowly finishing his cigarette. Then, he finally opened the car door, and made his way directly to the inpatient department.
Joshua was still in a coma after surgery. Eden, overwhelmed, had gone home to rest, leaving Caitlyn alone in the ward, staring blankly at her father. The doctor had said Joshua was in the late stages of liver cancer, and even with surgery, he had at most six months to live.
She couldn't believe that Joshua, who managed the entire family, was suddenly in this condition. Her eyelashes trembled slightly, wet with tears.
A nurse came in and said softly, "Ms. Robinson, there's a gentleman here to see you. He's waiting outside."
Caitlyn couldn't guess who it was. After thinking for a moment, she asked the nurse to watch over her father. She walked out and saw Landon leaning against the end of the corridor.
Caitlyn's face turned pale; she hadn't expected him to come.
With the light behind them, they couldn't see each other's expressions clearly.
They had only been apart for a short time, but meeting again felt like a lifetime had passed. He was now someone else's husband, and she was no longer a carefree girl.
After a long while, she walked towards him. When they were about four feet apart, he saw her face, swollen on one side, with redness and even some blood.
Landon's voice was hoarse. "Does it hurt a lot?"
Caitlyn looked at him quietly. Her once bright eyes were now dull. She answered softly, "Yes."
Landon took a step forward, seemingly wanting to touch her face.
But she stepped back, her voice even colder. "Mr. Carter, this isn't appropriate! You have a family, and doing this might hurt Mrs. Carter's feelings!"
Landon was a bit annoyed. "When you caused a scene at the wedding, did you not think about her feelings?"
In the past, Caitlyn would have argued with him.
But now, she just calmly said, "If Mr. Carter needs, I can apologize to Mrs. Carter anytime."
Landon didn't want to talk about his family issues. He looked at her and said softly, "I just wanted to see you! Is there anything you need my help with?"
Caitlyn was very calm. "Thank you for coming to see me, but I don't need any help from you. I need to go back to my father now, so I won't be entertaining you."
She was so cold, calling him Mr. Carter repeatedly, finally angering Landon.
He reached out, pulled her close, and held her in his arms. When he tried to touch her swollen face, she winced in pain, making Landon's heart ache. "Just because I'm married, does it mean we have to be this distant?"
Caitlyn tilted her head slightly and gave a bitter smile. She retorted, "Should I just accept your care and favors, and become your mistress out of gratitude? Landon, is that what you want? No matter how difficult things get, I won't be that humble again!"
