Chapter 774 Johnny, I'm Scared!
But nothing could calm Lola down.
She had always been delicate, the apple of Frederick and Charlotte's eye. When her younger siblings came along, she learned to be a good sister. Later, she became Johnny's wife and the mother of their children.
For so many years, Lola played the role of the mature one.
Only when she became seriously ill did the little girl deep inside her finally emerge. That was when she could express her pain and fear.
Her face was pressed into the pillow, softly gazing at him, just like every time she was sick as a child, needing him by her side.
Johnny's heart was breaking.
His hands trembled as he gently caressed her face, silently comforting her. He even leaned down, pressing his warm face against her feverish one.
At that moment, Lola felt a sense of time and space distortion.
She had the illusion of being back in her youth, when Johnny hadn't yet gone abroad, and they spent every day together.
When she was sick, Johnny would stay with her all night.
Lola slowly and lightly wrapped her arms around Johnny's neck, pressing her body against his because he was so warm. Her voice trembled, "Johnny... I'm scared."
Johnny's body went rigid.
Lola held him tightly, wearing only his shirt with nothing underneath.
In her dream, she was a teenager, but in reality, she was not.
The woman in his arms was a mature woman, the mother of his children, someone he had shared countless intimate moments with. He knew her body well.
Johnny suppressed his emotions, kissed her forehead, and silently comforted her.
Just then, a servant came in with a medical kit, saying, "The doctor will be here in half an hour."
Johnny took the alcohol from the servant, saying, "You can leave now."
The servant, seeing them embracing, blushed and quickly left, closing the door behind her.
She leaned against the door, deep in thought.
It was clear that Johnny and Lola had feelings for each other, especially in such vulnerable moments.
Smiling to herself, she hurried downstairs to prepare some soup. After the fever broke, Lola would need to replenish her strength.
In the bedroom, Johnny was still entangled with Lola. She pressed her small face against his chest, softly calling his name.
That call felt like a gentle bite on his heart.
His entire heart went numb.
Johnny didn't know how deeply one could love another, but he knew that only Lola could make his heart race. Only she could keep him from acting on the darkness within him and maintain peace with the Hawkins family.
Lola was the most beautiful existence in the world.
For a time, he had forgotten that the person in his arms was so warm.
Johnny gently pulled her arms away, whispering in her ear, "Let me clean you up... Lola, be good."
His soothing words seemed to work, and Lola relaxed, lying softly on the bed.
It was as if she trusted him completely.
Johnny exhaled a shaky breath, his eyes on her as he turned off all the lights.
Outside, the rain continued to fall softly, but the moon peeked out, casting a faint glow through the window onto the bed, making Lola's body appear as if it were covered in a delicate layer of glass.
So beautiful!
Johnny leaned over slowly, his fingers trembling as he unbuttoned her shirt.
He feared her rejection, feared a strong reaction.
But there was none. Lola lay there softly, obediently watching him.
He used alcohol to gently wipe her body, inch by inch. Under the dim light, her skin seemed to tremble.
In just five minutes, Johnny was drenched in sweat, his voice hoarse, "All done! Let me help you get dressed."
The next second, he was pulled into an embrace.
Her soft body pressed against his, challenging his remaining self-control. Johnny stroked her waist, and he said, "We can't."
"Why not?"
Lola's hand rested on his chest, her voice soft, "Johnny, your heart is beating so fast."
How could it not be? He was about to explode!
Johnny suddenly grabbed her hand, pinning it to her side. He panted, staring at her intensely. If the light were better, she would see how intense his gaze was.
Finally, he lowered his head and kissed her.
Johnny knew that at this moment, Lola's mind was back in their youth. She wasn't fully aware... she thought they were still in those innocent days, so she wouldn't resist anything he did.
She had forgotten their separation.
She had forgotten their arguments.
She had forgotten about Shirley and the hurt he had caused her.
Now, Lola trusted him completely, lying soft and pliant beneath him, letting him do as he wished. If he didn't love her, he might have given in to his desires.
But he loved her.
So he kissed her, giving her the tenderness she wanted, melting her with each kiss.
In the dim light, their fingers intertwined.
Dreaming, Lola was so innocent, unable to withstand Johnny's attention. Her eyes filled with emotion, and she lowered her head, searching for her lover.
When pleasure overwhelmed her, she looked up at the night sky, calling out his name sharply.
Johnny kissed her lips.
She trembled, calling his name over and over, her skin quivering... she held him tightly, the one who brought her joy.
Johnny couldn't stop kissing her, each kiss filled with heartbreak.
He knew this moment of intimacy was stolen.
When Lola woke up, she might forget everything, or she might look at him with unfamiliar eyes. He kept kissing her until she calmed down.
Lola was drenched in sweat, and he cleaned her up again.
Lola was exhausted and fell into a deep sleep, unresponsive to his touch, lying quietly.
Johnny's gaze was deep.
He had just finished tidying up when the servant brought the doctor in. Knowing what might have happened, she knocked on the door, "Mr. Flores, the doctor is here."
Johnny sat by the bed, watching Lola's sleeping face, and said calmly, "Come in."
The servant led the doctor in.
The doctor, aware of Lola's status, was very careful. He took her temperature and examined her, "It's not a high fever. A shot and some medicine will do."
After giving the shot and preparing the medicine, the doctor looked at Lola, "Mrs. Flores is very weak. She needs to maintain her nutrition, or she'll get sick in this weather."
He called her Mrs. Flores, and Johnny didn't correct him.
Everyone knew they were divorced, but with Lola lying in his bed, it was hard to tell.
The doctor left shortly after.
Johnny asked the servant to escort the doctor out, then slowly lay down on the bed next to Lola. She was in a deep, rare peaceful sleep.
He couldn't help but press his face close to hers, whispering, "Mrs. Flores."
He cherished this stolen moment.
That night, he held her as if she were the most precious thing in the world.
The rain finally stopped.
The night was quiet, with only the occasional sound of raindrops falling from the eaves outside, each drop echoing in the silence.
Johnny didn't know how long it had been since he felt peaceful. Holding Lola in his arms, it was like they were young again.
Even the longest night has an end.
As the first light of dawn broke through the clouds, he kissed her forehead and slowly let go. As he was about to pull away, Lola's hand reached out, as if trying to hold on.
But he was determined to leave. How could she hold on?
As he left, he thought, she would get used to it, just like when he went abroad and said goodbye to her. She was sad for a while but eventually moved on.
This time would be the same.
He bent down and gave her one last kiss. "From now on, I'll just be your family."
In the dim light, he silently exited the room, stepping out of her life that should have been smooth and bright.
Lola woke up to the bright daylight.
She rubbed her aching forehead, turned over in bed, and groaned. Suddenly, she opened her eyes and realized she was in Johnny's villa.
The memories of last night came flooding back.
She had a fever, Johnny took care of her, helped her clean up, and then kissed her.
Lola had been semi-conscious, but she hadn't completely passed out. She could still remember the touch, the way her body reacted. She remembered how she clung to his neck, how she pleaded with him.
They...
As she was thinking, there was a knock on the door. "Mrs. Flores, are you awake? Mr. Flores called and asked me to check on you."
Johnny had gone to work?
Lola lowered her eyes and responded softly, "Come in."
The servant entered, holding a paper bag. She smiled and said, "Felicity returned from Syeattel early this morning and brought you some clothes. Try them on and see if they fit."
If Felicity picked them, they would fit perfectly.
Lola smiled faintly, "Thank you. Please prepare breakfast for me. I'll take a shower and come down to eat."
The servant was pleased, "Breakfast has been ready for a while. It's all nutritious food. Mr. Flores gave specific instructions this morning and talked for a long time!"
Lola's smile faded. What was the point of all those instructions? She was only going to eat here once.
Last night was an accident, and Lola didn't dwell on it for long.
If Johnny had changed his mind, he wouldn't have left this morning. He would have stayed with her.
Lola took a shower and changed into the clothes.
As she buttoned up, she looked at the bruises on her arm for a long time.
Downstairs, the servant kept trying to make conversation with her, hoping they would reconcile.
Lola didn't interrupt, listening quietly until she finished her last sip of milk. Then she spoke softly, "Thank you for last night. Please thank Mr. Flores for me as well. And from now on, don't call me Mrs. Flores."
She looked at the space on her ring finger and smiled faintly.
"I'm single now."
The servant was stunned. Last night, it seemed like they had reconciled. She had heard the sounds. How could it still be like this today?
Lola finished breakfast and left.
After a night of rain, the morning was bright and sunny.
Lola opened the car door and sat inside. After sitting quietly for a couple of minutes, she sent a message to Johnny: [Johnny, there's a family dinner on Saturday. Mom and Dad want to know if you'll come.]
After sending the message, she tossed her phone aside and started the car.
As the car left the villa, the trees and plants slowly receded, much like the feelings they had finally left behind.
They had finally become a loving family.
Lola thought, if love had an expiration date, then that date was family.
After last night, she felt calm and serene.
Perhaps this was the best way for her and Johnny to get along. Even though they still had feelings for each other, they might find someone else to fill the void in their hearts in a few years.
As the luxury car passed through the black wrought-iron gates, Lola's fingers lightly touched her chest.
Johnny had filled the missing piece in her heart.
Johnny received Lola's message, a simple sentence, and he stared at it for a long time.
They understood each other.
He could see what she meant. She was no longer pursuing him. She wanted to care for him as a sister. Even if one day he had someone else, she would sincerely give her blessing.
Lola's love for him was about letting go and allowing him to be happy.
But he wasn't brave enough.
Johnny stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, looking down at everything below. Behind him, Felicity spoke slowly, "If you go to Ms. Hawkins now, she might still come back to you. But if you wait too long, she might find someone else, and then you won't have the advantage."
Johnny didn't respond.
Felicity had returned from out of town early that morning, feeling a bit resentful. But because Johnny paid her well, she didn't mind. She spoke softly, "There's a meeting soon. You..."
Johnny turned around and said calmly, "Get ready."
It wasn't until the meeting started that he replied to Lola's message.
Just one word: [OK!]
After sending the message, he sat quietly as if waiting for her reply.
He didn't hear a word of what his subordinates were saying.
But his phone didn't ring again. He realized that in their current relationship, she didn't need to reply.
They were just family now.
Johnny smiled lightly, a bitter smile.
Later, their interactions were neither warm nor cold, but he became a good father. He no longer felt ashamed in front of the children and accepted his imperfect leg.
On weekends, he would take the kids for the weekend.
Stella crawled around on the bedroom carpet, asking him to tell stories, build blocks, and feed her.
Angelina would help massage his leg after finishing her homework. Austin, though outwardly cool, would secretly search for the best rehabilitation methods and even accompany Johnny to see doctors, showing a newfound maturity.
Johnny's life became peaceful, even happy.
Except for Lola, who remained his regret.
This regret deepened as his leg rehabilitation improved to seventy percent.
On Christmas, the first snow fell.
Johnny was sitting in his car, answering a call from Angelina. Her voice was gentle, saying she missed him.
Johnny smiled slightly.
Suddenly, his smile froze. He saw Lola.
Lola wasn't alone.
She was with a young man, her hand resting on his shoulder, a relaxed smile on her lips, her eyes bright. She looked radiant.
It was as if... as if she had fallen in love.
