Chapter 293 She Was Going to Get a Divorce
Frederick didn't want a divorce.
So, he started bugging Charlotte, showing up at the entrance of Vertex Innovations Group every day after work.
Charlotte was beyond tired. She could put up with a lot—his crappy temper, his lousy performance in bed.
But when it came to Brenda, he kept crossing the line. He knew Brenda's covetousness, yet he still let her get close.
He didn't respect his wife.
He even thought that as long as there was no physical relationship, he was still being faithful.
It was 5:30 PM on Friday.
Charlotte handed the signed documents to Jenna. "Distribute these and then you can bounce for the day."
Jenna smiled. "Ms. Russell, Mr. Hawkins called and said he wanted to pick up Lola with you."
Charlotte didn't say anything.
Jenna didn't dare to say more and left with the documents.
Charlotte sat there, zoned out for a moment, then packed up her stuff and left.
Frederick had been pestering her, not wanting a divorce, and now he was using their kids to soften her heart. But he didn't know that it was precisely because of the kids that she made this decision so quickly!
In the lobby of Vertex Innovations Group,
Frederick sat casually on the sofa, looking all dignified.
His handsome face was cheerful, not at all like a guy about to be divorced.
Charlotte came downstairs.
Frederick immediately stood up, took her briefcase, and said gently, "There's an event at the kindergarten today, so class ends a bit later. It's just the right time for us to pick up Lola now."
He was smart; Charlotte didn't want to make a scene in public.
Besides, she wanted to make Lola happy.
Charlotte got into his car.
Frederick could tell she didn't want to talk to him. The most she asked each day was when he would sign the papers.
He wasn't going to sign them!
His Adam's apple moved slightly, and he said in a low voice, "Buckle up."
Charlotte snapped back to reality.
As she fastened her seatbelt, he started the car and gently probed, "Shall we take Lola out for dinner later? She fussed quite a bit last night, saying she wanted to eat with both Mommy and Daddy!"
His words had a deeper meaning, and Charlotte understood.
She was silent for a while before saying, "After the divorce, you can still see her and Kingsley whenever you want."
Frederick's fingers turned white as he gripped the steering wheel.
He asked softly, "What about you? Can't I see you anymore?"
Charlotte felt bad too.
She turned her face away and said softly, "Of course you can see me, but the relationship will be different."
Frederick didn't say anything more. After driving for a long time, he finally said in a low voice, "Charlotte, can't you forgive me this once?"
Charlotte's lips moved slightly.
She wanted to say so much, but in the end, she didn't want to say anything.
After that, he didn't speak again.
Outside the kindergarten, there were many parents picking up their kids. Charlotte couldn't embarrass him in front of others, so they walked side by side to pick up Lola.
But the moment she saw Lola, Charlotte's blood froze.
Lola stood there, motionless.
She had fallen into a state of autism.
Brenda was squatting in front of Lola, smiling and seemingly gently coaxing her. "These are candies I bought for you, Lola. Do you like them? Why aren't you talking?"
The kindergarten teacher, Rose, was also flustered.
Brenda had scared Lola. Rose was about to call Charlotte.
But Charlotte had already arrived. She was trembling with anger.
Unable to win over the man, Brenda came to harass Lola. How was she any different from Katherine?
Brenda slowly realized something was wrong. She was a bit scared and looked up to see Charlotte and Frederick. Instinctively, she defended herself, looking innocent and pitiful, "Mr. Hawkins, Mrs. Hawkins, I didn't mean to. I don't know why she's like this? Should we take her to the hospital?"
Charlotte gently hugged Lola. She raised her hand and gave Brenda two hard slaps.
Brenda's mouth bled, and her face swelled on one side. Tears welled up in her eyes as she cried, "Mrs. Hawkins, I didn't mean to!"
Charlotte controlled her emotions. "If anything happens to Lola, I will take your life!"
With that, she picked up Lola.
Frederick wanted to take Lola. "Charlotte, let me hold her!"
Without thinking, Charlotte pushed him away forcefully. At that moment, she didn't want to see him.
If it weren't for him giving Brenda the wrong impression time and again, if it weren't for him arranging her life and giving her rides home, Brenda wouldn't dare to come and harass Lola. She relied on nothing but Frederick's indulgence!
Frederick immediately chased after them.
His arm was grabbed by someone, and when he turned around, it was Brenda. She stammered, "Mr. Hawkins, I didn't mean to!"
Frederick had no intention of getting tangled up with her and pushed her away.
Charlotte was already in the car.
Frederick opened the car door, got in, and turned to look at Lola. She was motionless in her mom's arms, refusing to speak. This was the first time Frederick had seen Lola in such a state since his amnesia.
He gritted his teeth and started the car.
Brenda touched her face, stunned. Frederick had pushed her roughly just now.
There was disgust in his eyes.
How could he be disgusted with her? Didn't he really like her face?
Charlotte took Lola home.
She gave Lola some calming medicine and tried to coax her to sleep.
Lola refused.
Charlotte was heartbroken.
She put a thick coat on Lola and squatted beside her to keep her company.
Charlotte gently hugged Lola.
A down jacket was draped over her shoulders, and behind her was Frederick's hoarse voice. "Put on a coat; it's cold outside."
Charlotte was extremely disgusted with him.
She threw the coat away and pushed him hard.
Frederick was caught off guard and slammed into a nearby stone pillar, his forehead bleeding profusely.
In the night, it was quite a shocking sight.
He wiped it off with his hand, not caring.
Charlotte suppressed her emotions and said sternly, "Lola has been hurt by Katherine twice. Brenda, trying to please you, approached Lola and scared her into autism. Do you know how long it's been since she last had an episode? Frederick, this is what you get for letting her play around with you."
Now, Charlotte had only one thought left. That was to leave Frederick.
Lola finally came to her senses in the middle of the night. She whimpered and threw herself into her mom's arms.
Charlotte knew she was scared and held her, gently comforting her.
Lola clung to Charlotte's neck, tears in her eyes, and whispered, "I'm hungry."
Charlotte kissed her. "I'll make you something delicious."
She carried Lola into the house.
Patrick and Laura were also overjoyed; Lola was finally willing to speak.
Patrick had stayed with Lola for as long as she had been cold, and now he kissed her repeatedly, wishing he could take her suffering upon himself.
Charlotte went to the kitchen to make a children's meal for Lola.
Lola ate heartily.
Laura personally cooked and brought food to Charlotte, saying gently and lovingly, "Eat something to warm up."
"Thank you!" Charlotte sat down and quietly ate her pasta.
Frederick watched all this, feeling like an outsider.
Patrick said harshly, "Come over here!"
They went to the study.
Frederick had just finished wiping off the blood.
Patrick pointed at Frederick, furious. "You idiot! How capable do you think you are? Is it worth it for that woman? Look at how much Charlotte loves her kids. Can she be a loving mom without having love for you?"
Frederick was a bit confused.
Patrick sneered. "Yes, you don't remember! You are Charlotte's husband, Lola and Kingsley's father!"
After venting his anger, Patrick suddenly felt tired.
In the late night, the light on his face made him look particularly old.
He waved his hand and sat down, saying in a low voice, "Maybe this is fate. Charlotte wants to divorce you. Your mom and I can't bear it, but she had postpartum depression when she gave birth to Lola. So, Frederick, do whatever you want in the future, but I won't agree to any other woman marrying into our family. And the Hawkins family assets are for Lola and Kingsley!"
Frederick also sat down gently. He took out a cigarette and lit it.
After a long pause, he said in a hoarse voice, "Dad, I don't want to divorce Charlotte!"
Patrick sighed softly.
He said wearily, "Frederick, I'm a man too. I understand your feelings. But you don't know that before you lost your memory, you and Charlotte were in love! Your feelings for Katherine are nothing compared to what you and Charlotte have been through! Now Charlotte's disappointment in you is as deep as her love for you."
Frederick stayed in the study until dawn. He then slowly got up to check on Lola.
Lola was asleep.
Frederick watched her for a long time and kissed her again.
He genuinely liked Lola; she was so smart and adorable.
He had an important trial in the morning, and it was almost time, so he went back to his room to change into a suit for the office.
Unexpectedly, Charlotte was in his room, sitting quietly on the sofa in the living room, looking like she had been waiting for him for a long time.
On the table was a divorce agreement.
Frederick froze.
Was she going to divorce him directly?
