Chapter 136 Lying Alone on the Cold Operating Table
Charlotte closed her eyes, feeling a sharp pain in her lower abdomen. Amidst the pain, she thought she heard something break—probably her heart.
She adjusted herself, eyes both confused and determined. "Frederick, you go ahead," she said.
Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell thanked her profusely, saying she was very understanding. Frederick stood up, took off his coat, and handed it to her. But Charlotte pushed it away.
Frederick was taken aback. "I don't need it," she said softly. He chose Katherine over her, and a coat wouldn't fix that.
Annoyed, Frederick snapped, "I'll take you back later!"
Charlotte didn't reply. It was her turn for treatment. She stood up, avoiding his gaze. She wanted someone who put her first, unlike Frederick.
Charlotte walked to the examination room, leaving Frederick looking upset. Mrs. Mitchell nudged him, "Let's go check on Katherine." Elijah hesitated but led Frederick to the VIP ward.
In the exam room, the doctor noticed Charlotte's pain and asked, "Where's your husband?"
Embarrassed, Charlotte replied, "He doesn't have time."
The doctor, understanding, scolded, "He had time when you two had sex, didn't he?"
The doctor pressed her abdomen, causing Charlotte to convulse in pain. Charlotte whimpered, "It hurts."
The doctor looked serious. "Prepare for emergency surgery! Patient is in critical condition with severe abdominal pain!" she told the nurse.
Charlotte's mind went blank. The doctor quickly wrote the surgery order, scolding, "If you had come any later, it could have been life-threatening! You need someone to stay with you tonight. Can you call a friend or family member?"
Charlotte, in pain, said, "I'll call my friend."
The doctor felt sympathy for her. Such a beautiful girl, abandoned by some man.
With trembling hands, Charlotte called Lily. Lily cursed, "What the hell is wrong with Frederick! Bastard!"
Charlotte signed the papers and underwent the surgery. It was a minor surgery but very painful. She gripped the hospital sheets, enduring the pain. In her daze, she thought she heard Frederick whisper, "Does it feel good? Charlotte, I feel great."
Charlotte turned her face, tears streaming down unexpectedly.
When Lily arrived, Charlotte's surgery was over. She looked pale and frail, trembling with every breath, her legs barely holding her up.
This pain and humiliation overshadowed all the love Frederick had ever given her.
Lily burst into tears when she saw her. "Where's that bastard! He can't still be with his old flame, can he?"
Charlotte smiled faintly. Lily was right; Frederick had left her to visit Katherine. He said he'd check on her, but it had been almost an hour, and he hadn't returned.
Charlotte didn't care anymore. She was done with him. From now on, she wouldn't have any hope for him. Whether he loved or hated Katherine, it didn't matter to her.
Lily got her some medicine and helped her get ready to leave.
In the hospital lobby, they ran into Katherine's family and Frederick. Elijah and Mrs. Mitchell were supporting Katherine, with Frederick following behind, holding a bag of medicine. He looked like the perfect son-in-law, and Katherine seemed happy.
Her face was rosy, her voice soft. "Frederick, you really didn't have to come see me! You left Miss Russell behind; she must be angry!"
Charlotte didn't hear Frederick's response, but the scene made her feel sick. "Lily, let's go," she said softly.
"Go where?" Lily was furious. She left Charlotte behind and marched toward the family.
Lily's voice was sharp. "Mr. Hawkins, you sure are busy! You left Charlotte alone on the operating table while you visited an old flame. Frederick, you're worse than ten Roberts!"
Frederick frowned and ignored Lily, looking at Charlotte instead. She was leaning against the wall, pale and bloodless.
He handed the bag to Elijah and stepped forward to support Charlotte, but she gently pushed him away. She wouldn't let him near; her whole being rejected him.
Taking a deep breath, she said, "Frederick, we're done! When you chose to see Katherine, we were completely over. If you continue to help my father with his case, I'll be grateful. If not, I'll ask Ethan. I'm sure he can find a way."
Saying this almost exhausted all of Charlotte's strength. Frederick tried to grab her, explaining, "I didn't know you needed surgery, otherwise I wouldn't have left."
Charlotte didn't argue. She stood there, thinking for a long time before saying, "Frederick, I did like you! But now I'm not sure anymore. Liking you made me feel so small. Your rules and privileges, I don't deserve any of it. We're done. Don't drag it out anymore."
She finished speaking and gave him a light smile, like morning dew on a flower blooming on the edge of a cliff. It dripped onto Frederick's heart, causing him pain.
Charlotte turned around, supported by Lily, and walked away. Frederick grabbed her arm tightly, his voice tense. "Charlotte."
Charlotte said coldly, "Get your hands off me, Frederick! We're done. I don't want anything to do with you anymore. You and Katherine can relax, I won't like you anymore."
