Chapter 233 This is my ex-husband!

Charlotte was totally floored.

Frederick's voice was all raspy and rough. "Look, I'm not trying to get your pity here, but if you come back to be Lola's mom, you might end up like me—no life of your own! You still wanna do this?"

Those words hit Charlotte like a ton of bricks.

How could she not want Lola?

She stared at him, her chest rising and falling like crazy, not knowing what to say.

Frederick reached out and gently touched her face.

He knew she felt awful, but he had to lay it out for her. Raising Lola was no joke, and he was scared she'd end up hating him for it.

If he hadn't gone to Novaria that time, maybe she'd still be sleeping upstairs and Lola wouldn't be so frail!

Charlotte stayed silent for a long time, not even pushing him away. In moments like this, they both needed a little warmth from each other.

After what felt like forever, Frederick pulled his hand back and said softly, "Go upstairs. I got a meeting later. I'll swing by another day. You pick up Lola this afternoon, and I'll take her home tonight."

Charlotte just nodded.

She almost bolted, not even sure what she was running from!

Was it Frederick's kindness, or the painful past she couldn't shake?

Charlotte was clearly out of it!

While peeling fruit, she almost sliced her finger.

Maria, lounging on the hospital bed, chuckled. "Put it down! You're gonna hurt yourself!"

Charlotte lowered her hand and softly said, "Mom!"

Maria waved her over, held her hand gently, and said, "I only found out about Lola this year! Frederick brought her to Copenhegan, and such a tiny kid freaked everyone out. Your grandma cried for ages, and Frederick knelt all night!"

Charlotte leaned her head against Maria.

Maria stroked her hair and said softly, "Andrew thinks you should have more options, not just be with Frederick for the kid. So, the Collins family asked him to set you up with someone, and he didn't say no! My advice? Follow your heart, but don't rush. You've broken up and gotten back together so many times."

Charlotte nodded. "Mom, I'll be careful!"

Right now, all she wanted was to raise Lola right and watch her grow up.

Maria smiled. "Bring Lola over tomorrow. I haven't seen her in ages, and I miss her. Lola looks just like you did as a kid, but she's got Frederick's spirit. She's gonna be something!"

Thinking of Lola made Charlotte's heart melt!

She stayed with Maria for a long time and only left to pick up Lola at 3:30 in the afternoon.

At the kindergarten gate, Lola's little face lit up with pride when she saw Charlotte.

Charlotte took Lola's tiny backpack, squatted down to wipe her sweat, and smiled gently. "Later, I gotta work at the restaurant. Wanna come eat with me?"

Lola blinked her big, bright eyes.

In her sweet, kiddie voice, she said, "Mommy, are you broke? Daddy's got lots of money!"

Charlotte kissed her. "I own that restaurant and sometimes play the piano there!"

Lola instantly lit up.

She wanted her Mommy to hold her and hugged her mommy's neck tight.

Her mommy smelled so good!

Charlotte took Lola to the restaurant.

She got a seat near the piano and let Lola sit, ordering her a pretty good meal.

Lola usually made a mess while eating.

This time, Charlotte cut the steak for her, and Lola ate with a tiny fork, looking all proper and dignified.

Charlotte watched for a bit and sighed deeply, seeing Frederick in her!

After taking care of Lola, she went to play the piano. Maybe because she was in a good mood, the pieces she played today were especially beautiful and moving!

Lola propped her little head on her hands.

She watched her Mommy's slender waist, straight back, and the golden hair that fell down romantically. The long dress was also beautiful!

None of the moms of her kindergarten friends were as pretty as her Mommy!

Lola speared a piece of steak and ate it heartily!

Charlotte played about ten pieces, then came over to eat something. She loved to keep a good figure, so she ate very little for dinner.

She checked the time; it was 8 PM.

Kids Lola's age usually went to bed by 9 PM.

Charlotte was about to call Frederick when a tall figure appeared by the table, accompanied by a somewhat familiar voice. "Charlotte!"

Charlotte was slightly taken aback.

Derek?

Derek was the blind date Andrew had introduced to her. She had declined him later, not expecting to run into him.

Charlotte wasn't naive; she didn't think this was a coincidence.

She was thinking about how to keep her distance without being obvious.

Lola said, "Hello!"

Derek sat down naturally and asked Charlotte, "Is she a relative's kid? She's quite cute!"

Charlotte smiled lightly. "She's my kid!"

Derek was stunned.

He knew Charlotte had been married and had a kid, but he didn't expect her to have the kid with her.

Charlotte thought it was good; with a kid, Derek probably wouldn't try to run into her again!

Lola looked innocent.

She took candy from her pink backpack, placed it in Derek's hand, and said softly, "You're very handsome! I was gonna give this candy to Johnny, but now I'll give it to you!"

Derek was quite touched.

He patted Lola.

Lola, very softly, let him pat her curly hair and said sweetly, "Mommy loves this candy too! Daddy always peels it and feeds it to Mommy. Daddy is so good to Mommy; he even washed her clothes this morning!"

Lola said softly, "Mommy, Daddy is here to take us home!"

Charlotte was taken aback and looked outside.

Sure enough, Frederick's black Maybach was already parked outside. He stood by the car, staring deeply in this direction, his expression not looking good.

Charlotte guessed it was because of Derek.

Derek saw it too.

Through the glass, outside stood a particularly distinguished man, exceptionally handsome, the kind of man a woman would never forget if she had been with him.

Charlotte gave him an apologetic smile. "I have to go now!"

Derek knew he had no chance, but he didn't know why he was so persistent, even following her outside.

So, the two men faced each other.

Charlotte felt quite helpless.

She forced a smile and introduced them, "This is Derek, Andrew's colleague's son."

In a moment of male competition, Frederick didn't care about manners.

He was angry and snorted. "Isn't he your date? Then introduce me to him too!"

Charlotte was infuriated by him!

He was so childish!

She smiled slightly and said to Derek, "This is my ex-husband!"

Frederick didn't look angry; he even nodded. "Yes! We are divorced!"

He put Lola in the car and turned around, gently saying, "I'll take her home first. You can pick her up tomorrow morning! By the way, the clothes you dirtied last night are folded and I put them in the guest room."
