Chapter 126: She Was Overestimating Herself

Charlotte stayed quiet for a long time.

Frederick was patient. He gently said, "I'll pick you up tonight."

After a while, Charlotte finally said, "Okay."

She knew when Frederick wanted something, he'd put in the effort. He wanted to be with her, and he knew how to please her. She couldn't resist when he made a move.

That night was more romantic and wild than any before. His sweet words filled every corner of the apartment. He held her and made love to her most of the night.

Charlotte had to admit, Frederick gave her the best pleasure and most thrilling sensations.

Early morning.

When Charlotte woke up, Frederick was tying his tie by the bed. Seeing her awake, he bent down and kissed her.

"Are you really going today?" Charlotte asked softly, her eyes sparkling after last night.

Frederick nodded. "I have a trial that might run late, but I should be back by nine tonight. How will you introduce me?"

Charlotte wrapped her arms around his neck and whispered something. Frederick's eyes changed slightly. If he weren't in a hurry, he would've taken her right then.

But he had a trial and left quickly.

Charlotte's body was sore, but she co-ran the music room with Ms. Garcia. She couldn't let Ms. Garcia handle everything alone, so after resting, she got up.

She spent the day meeting with parents.

By six in the evening, she finally had time to rush back to the apartment and change for the dinner party.

She chose a light pink long dress, cinched at the waist. She pinned up her golden hair and wore pearl earrings. She looked fresh and elegant.

After doing her makeup, Charlotte looked in the mirror and blushed. She wondered if she was overthinking it, but her outfit seemed to cater to Frederick's taste. She knew what he liked and how to dress to make him want her.

Charlotte didn't dare think further. She tidied up and went downstairs, ready to leave.

Today was important. Her father and Maria would be there, and Frederick wanted to meet them. She tried to stay calm but was secretly excited. Maybe Frederick was serious this time.

Charlotte sat in the car and messaged him: [I'm heading to the hotel. Message me when you arrive.]

About ten minutes later, Frederick replied: [Okay.]

Knowing he was busy, she didn't bother him further. She drove to the hotel alone.

Her parents and friends had already arrived. Charlotte greeted everyone.

Maria, after waiting a long time without seeing Frederick, pulled Charlotte aside and whispered, "Where's Mr. Hawkins? Didn't he say he was coming?"

Charlotte smiled lightly, "He has a trial that might run late."

Maria sighed in relief, "Oh, I thought you two had another falling out."

Charlotte didn't respond, but her eyes and smile showed the affection of a woman loved by a man. Maria, having been through it herself, took a closer look and didn't ask further.

At that moment, Ms. Garcia came over with a gift list. "There are two cash gifts you should know about."

Charlotte took the list. "What's wrong?"

After looking at it, she fell silent. One was from Ethan, $500,000. The other was from Oliver, also $500,000.

Ms. Garcia cleared her throat. "Did they plan this together, or are they competing?"

Charlotte thought for a moment. "It's not okay to accept these. I'll return them later."

Ms. Garcia complimented, "You look great in light-colored dresses. They really suit your skin, Charlotte. It's so delicate."

Charlotte smiled faintly.

She checked the time; it was past 8:30. Frederick should be arriving soon. She didn't want to disturb him, so she didn't call.

Nine o'clock.

Nine-thirty.

Frederick still hadn't shown up. Maria couldn't stand it any longer and pulled Charlotte aside, whispering, "Why isn't he here yet? Your dad's already asked."

Charlotte walked to the balcony and dialed Frederick's number. His phone was off. Her face turned pale.

She forced a smile at Maria. "Maybe he's on his way."

Maria, though hopeful, could see Charlotte's discomfort and gently reassured her, "I'll come up with an excuse for your dad. Don't worry."

Charlotte nodded softly.

After Maria left, Charlotte stayed on the balcony. She hesitated, then called Cherie.

Cherie was surprised to hear from her. "Mr. Hawkins left at 8:30."

Charlotte thanked her. She thought Frederick must be stuck in traffic. She still hoped he'd show up and say, "Congratulations, my morning dew."

But he didn't.

The dinner party continued until 10:30. Guests began to leave, and even William and Maria left in an arranged car. Frederick still hadn't shown up. His phone was still off.

Charlotte knew Frederick's work habits and cautious nature; he rarely turned off his phone. She had a vague feeling something was wrong but didn't want to believe it. They had been getting along so well. She thought they could talk it out when they met.

Charlotte and Ms. Garcia were the last to leave. As she got into the car, a sudden thunderclap split the sky, illuminating the night as rain poured down.

Charlotte dialed Frederick's phone again. It was still off. She lowered her eyelashes and started the car. The rain fell harder and harder. The wipers swung back and forth, and the view ahead was foggy. Charlotte felt her heart was chaotic, and driving in such weather was dangerous.

She drove for a while and then pulled over. There was a hotel nearby. She hesitated about spending the night there but then thought of Frederick. His phone was off. Could something have happened to him?

Charlotte took out her phone, intending to try calling him again. But as she held the phone to her ear, her gaze froze.

Across the street, a golden Bentley was parked. Through the glass, Charlotte saw Frederick. He sat there quietly, with an expression of confusion and pain she had never seen before.

At that moment, the car door opened. A tall, slender figure ran out from the passenger seat. Charlotte recognized her as Katherine. Katherine was running recklessly in the rain. After about ten seconds, Frederick got out of the car. He quickly caught up with Katherine and pulled her into his arms.

Charlotte's hand, holding the phone, stiffened. So this was why his phone was off, why he missed their appointment!

The wipers kept swinging. Everything in front of her was both clear and blurry. She saw Katherine hugging Frederick's waist, and Frederick didn't push her away. Katherine seemed to be crying. Frederick's hand gently rested on her head, his expression hesitant and pained.

Watching the couple who once loved each other passionately, Charlotte suddenly smiled lightly. She laughed at her own overestimation of herself.
