Chapter 433 What Exactly Is Wrong with Him?
In the car, Chloe leaned against the door, staying quiet.
After a bit, Frederick couldn't help but glance over, "Why you sittin' so far away from me?"
Chloe scooted closer. Frederick wrapped his arm around her, resting her head on his shoulder.
Frederick wanted to say something but held back.
Chloe misunderstood. She looked up and asked, "You mad at me? I won't see him alone anymore."
Frederick's voice was a bit rough, "Silly girl!"
He'd never be mad at her. He was just worried about how crushed she'd be when she found out Andrew, the love of her life, was seriously sick.
Frederick wasn't usually a conflicted guy. But this had him all twisted up, unable to decide.
At night, Frederick unusually smoked in the study.
The tightly closed door creaked open, and a sliver of light leaked in from outside.
He thought it was Charlotte. But it turned out to be Lola.
Frederick stubbed out his cigarette, patted his thigh, and said gently, "Can't sleep? Want me to hold you?"
Lola was wrapped in a small white blanket.
She ran over with bare feet and climbed into her dad's lap, whispering, "Mom is feeding Sienna! Kingsley is jealous!"
Frederick knew her best. He lightly tapped her little nose, "Are you jealous too?"
Lola raised her little head proudly, "Nope! I'm already seven!"
Frederick gently stroked her hair.
He knew Lola was jealous.
She had waited in the lab for two years, and hadn't had much natural milk or even cow's milk, only artificial nutrients with no taste.
Frederick's expression was softer than the night.
Frederick simply picked her up and walked towards the nursery, with Lola hugging her dad's neck.
But Kingsley wasn't in the nursery.
Charlotte was still feeding Sienna.
She was holding the food, and suddenly let go, smiling at Frederick.
Frederick naturally liked her too.
He smoothly placed Lola down and picked up Sienna, saying, "I'll change her diaper!"
Frederick leaned in and whispered in Charlotte's ear, "I see there's plenty; don't waste it!"
Charlotte understood.
Her face flushed a bit, after all, Lola was already a big kid.
"Frederick," she couldn't help but groan.
Frederick turned his back, slowly changing the diaper. In the end, there was no choice but to breastfeed Lola. Charlotte felt quite embarrassed.
After putting the kids to bed, they returned to the master bedroom.
She sat at the vanity applying skincare products, and Frederick teased her for a long time, but she ignored him. Finally, he pressed against her back, gently hugging her slim waist, and asked softly, "You mad?"
Charlotte turned her head, "What do you think?"
Frederick thought she smelled nice and couldn't help but take a bite.
"Lola hasn't had it before!"
Charlotte retorted, "And whose fault was that?"
Frederick knew he couldn't talk his way out of this, so he softly said, "It's my fault!"
Charlotte remained silent, continuing to apply her skincare products.
Later, when the couple was alone, intimacy naturally ensued.
Charlotte's eyes were filled with emotion. She gently caressed Frederick's face and asked softly, "Frederick, do you have something on your mind?"
Frederick lowered his head and kissed his wife.
After a while, he rolled to the side. Charlotte followed, still gently touching his face, "Is it about Andrew?"
Frederick lay flat, staring at the ceiling, and said softly, "The pathology report's bad. We gotta come up with a new treatment plan."
He turned to her, "Charlotte, the treatment's gonna be rough."
He couldn't help but lace his fingers with hers.
He loved Charlotte a lot, but because of Andrew and Chloe, he had this fear inside.
Sometimes he'd dream that he and Charlotte weren't together.
When he woke up, she'd be right there, peacefully by his side.
Charlotte was stunned.
She'd been Frederick's wife long enough to know exactly what he was thinking.
After a long while, Charlotte finally spoke softly, "You planning to tell Chloe?"
Frederick stayed silent, just gazing at her.
"I disagree!" Charlotte said softly, "Chloe's pregnant. If something bad happens, how's she gonna get through the rest of her life?"
Frederick was torn. He knew Charlotte had it tougher than he did.
He pulled her into his arms, whispering, "I know you mean well for Chloe, but if something goes wrong, it'll be her lifelong regret. They might still be able to support each other through this final stretch."
His words showed just how bad things were.
Charlotte was stunned for a moment and silently cried in his arms.
Frederick said hoarsely, "I think Andrew wouldn't give up easily; he's not a weak man."
Charlotte listened quietly.
She could still remember the first time she got a call from Andrew in Bostan. He said, "Charlotte, it's your uncle."
Charlotte knew Frederick had made up his mind.
She also knew that in the Hawkins Family, he was the one in charge. Even Patrick and his wife listened to his decisions, almost entrusting the family's matters to him.
Charlotte murmured, "Frederick, will you tell her, or should I?"
"I'll do it!" He kissed her, not letting her cry anymore.
The next morning, Frederick showed up at the Hawkins Mansion.
Chloe had just come downstairs when she saw her brother sitting on the sofa, drinking coffee.
Hearing footsteps, he said in a calm tone, "You missed your prenatal checkup yesterday. I'll go with you today."
Chloe felt like she was troubling him. "Jared can go with me."
Frederick glared at her, "Aren't you afraid people will think you married an old man?"
Jared rubbed his nose, feeling a bit awkward, "Andrew isn't much younger than me; he just takes good care of himself and looks good, so he appears younger!"
Chloe laughed instead. She linked arms with Jared, affectionately saying, "At the hospital, I'll call you Dad!"
The Hawkins Mansion was quite lively.
Only Frederick stood there, with an indescribable heaviness in his expression, which Patrick noticed.
Patrick also sensed something, and it left him feeling unsettled.
In the car, Frederick kept his eyes closed, resting.
Chloe didn't dare to provoke him. She always felt that something was off with Frederick.
At the hospital, Frederick suddenly said to Jared, "Drive the car to the inpatient building; we're gonna visit Andrew."
Chloe bit her lip, "How are we gonna see him?"
Frederick's face was calm, and he said indifferently, "He's been in the hospital for four months. Even if he's just a distant relative, shouldn't we visit him?"
Four months?
Thinking of Andrew's gaunt frame and pale face left her feeling unsettled.
She said, "What exactly is wrong with him?"
