Chapter 916 The Last Time We Were Intimate Was on Our Wedding Night
Sienna was watching an old classic movie, "Roman Holiday," when she heard the door open. She looked up, her eyes meeting Bruce's.
They hadn't seen much of each other lately. He was swamped with work, and she had her own commitments. Even though they shared a bed every night, their paths rarely crossed.
After a moment, she sat up and asked, "Have you eaten?"
Bruce tossed his jacket over the back of the couch and sat down next to her. "Why aren't you asleep yet?" he asked.
Sienna blinked, her gaze steady on him. "Why are you home so late?" she countered.
They sat in silence for a while.
Bruce pulled her into a hug, holding her close. "Once this busy period is over, I'll have more time," he said quietly. "The company's got a lot going on right now, but I'll make it up to you. Where do you want to travel?"
Sienna could see the struggle in his eyes.
She knew Bruce still cared for her, but Freya's death had left a deep scar.
People naturally protect themselves from trauma, and she suspected that every time he looked at her, he was reminded of Freya's tragic end.
He felt guilty. How could they be happy together?
It had been so long, and Bruce hadn't moved on. She couldn't just cling to him shamelessly.
Sienna took a deep breath and said, "I accepted a role in a movie. It's being filmed abroad, and I'll be gone for about six months."
Bruce let go of her.
Under the light, his expression darkened.
After a moment, he stood up, loosened his tie, and started unbuttoning his shirt, as if he was going to take a shower.
His tone was casual, "You didn't mention this before. Was it a last-minute decision? Sienna, why didn't you discuss this with me?"
Sienna didn't back down.
"I wanted to talk to you a few days ago, but you came home after midnight every night. When you did come home, you stayed in the study. By the time I woke up in the morning, you were already gone. Bruce, I don't know if I should discuss it with you or with someone who calls himself my husband!"
Finally, Sienna let out what had been on her mind for so long. "You're busy mourning Freya. You've forgotten that you're married, that you have a wife. No matter what, you should pull yourself together and move on. Bruce, no matter how independent I am, no matter how little I expect from you, I still hope for a normal married life. But clearly, you can't give me that. So what's wrong with me pursuing my career? You can work overtime, but I can't?"
"I never knew you were so eloquent!" Bruce's tone was flat, but Sienna knew he was angry.
Bruce paused, regaining some composure. He looked down at her and said, "I'm not stopping you from pursuing your career..."
Sienna softly interrupted him, "But when you married me, you didn't think about marrying a career woman, did you? You liked me looking pretty, always waiting for you at home. But Bruce, when I wait for you at home, you're not there!"
Bruce probably understood her feelings.
She was determined to go!
He still cared about Sienna, liked her, and felt guilty.
After thinking for a moment, he softened, "If you want to go, then go. It's only six months. I'll come visit you once I'm less busy."
This conversation seemed like a victory for Sienna, but she knew it wasn't.
She whispered, "Maybe getting married was a mistake."
Their feelings weren't deep enough to be unbreakable, not profound enough to lean on each other.
At least she hadn't reached Bruce's soul, and he hadn't reached hers.
Maybe it was disappointment that made her decide to go abroad.
Maybe after six months, things would be different. This time apart would be a chance to cool down.
While Sienna was showering, Bruce went downstairs to grab a bite. When he came back up, he went to the study again.
But later, when he returned to the bedroom, he wasn't as distant as usual. He undressed her gently and covered her body with his.
In the heat of the moment, they suddenly realized the last time they made love was on their wedding night.
