Chapter 100 Seeking a Scapegoat
The old Seraphina was timid, always hiding from trouble, waiting for Ophelia or Magnus to save the day.
Seraphina always dreamt of striking it rich without putting in the effort. She despised low-paying jobs and lacked the skills for high-paying ones. Her tolerance for hardship was low, and her education wasn't anything to brag about. Despite not aiming high or low, Seraphina ironically harbored dreams of wealth.
The amount of money poured into the show had genuinely shocked Magnus. Moreover, Seraphina's reaction to the situation left him startled and disappointed. Now, she was blaming him and Ophelia.
"Ophelia, of course, she's two-faced," Seraphina sobbed. "She’s been badmouthing me behind my back, I know it. In your eyes, I just can't do anything right, just dragging everyone down. I suppose you're satisfied now."
"Seraphina," Magnus sighed, "we don't see you as a burden. We grew up together. Why would you think such things? We've always wanted what's best for you."
"If you want what's best for me, then help me get my money back," Seraphina desperately clutched Magnus's arm. "You're a lawyer, a very good one. Help me find Giselle Byrd and the rest. I want to sue them for fraud."
Magnus felt helpless. "Seraphina, they've skipped town, even the cops can't locate them. Where do you expect me to find them?"
"You just don't want to help me!" Seraphina turned on him, pulling away from his grasp, tears streaming down her face. "What’s so wrong with wanting to make money? I’m not asking for the stars or the moon. There are so many rich people out there. Why can't I be one of them?”
Magnus fell silent.
"Seraphina, making money requires hard work and dedication. Things will improve in time if you put in the effort."
"Hard work? Look at those street sweepers; they work diligently. Have they gotten rich? And you—have you struck it rich after these years of working?" Seraphina’s views were extreme. "I’ve been working a steady job before, earning four or five thousand a month. I couldn’t even save enough for a house in my lifetime."
Magnus frowned. "Seraphina, if that's how you think, then there's nothing I can do."
"Magnus, you can't be out of options, what am I supposed to do now with over a million bucks?" Seraphina felt like she was being cut by a knife just thinking about it.
"We'll have to wait..."
"I can't wait." Seraphina said emotionally, "The loans I took out start coming due next month. Giselle said she would cover the interest for a few months, and once I start making money again, I could pay off the principal. But now, I've got nothing."
Seraphina had almost half a million in online loans, and just the interest amounted to ten thousand a month, not to mention the principal.
Magnus was a bit angry, "Seraphina, you were way in over your head, taking out that much money. Don't you ever think about the consequences?"
"How was I supposed to know they were con artists? Magnus, please help me, or I might as well be dead." Seraphina was in tears, making a scene.
She was really panicking and scared.
That much money, and Magnus was at a loss too.
Noticing his discomfort, Seraphina said, "If you can't help, I'll have to turn to Ophelia. She wouldn't leave me hanging."
Magnus was taken aback. On the one hand, Seraphina was impersonating Ophelia, and on the other, she was thinking of asking the real Ophelia for help with her troubles.
He didn't want to put Ophelia in a difficult position with such a large amount of money on the line and said, "Let me figure something out. Don't ask Ophelia for money. She just started working at Parks Corporation. She doesn’t have that kind of cash."
Upon hearing this, Seraphina felt a smug sense of satisfaction mixed with envy.
Magnus was willing to help her, but only because he didn't want her going to Ophelia.
No matter what, as long as Magnus was willing to step in, it eased Seraphina’s mind a bit.
"Magnus, thank you. I knew you wouldn’t just leave me high and dry." Seraphina’s gratitude wasn't entirely sincere; she just had no one else to rely on and was grasping at Magnus as her lifeline for the moment.
"You're like a sister to me, we grew up together, and I have never neglected you. How could I start now?" Magnus spoke earnestly. "I just mentioned to Ophelia that there was a little issue on your end, something about money. Keep that to yourself for now. I'll figure something out. As for the impersonation thing, I hope you'll explain it to Ophelia yourself."
Seraphina felt a bit reluctant. "If I tell her, Ophelia might get mad. She could hold a grudge against me, and I don't want to hurt her feelings."
