Chapter 16 Her Vanity
The three of them planned to gather at the usual restaurant, and Magnus was the first to arrive.
When Ophelia arrived, she headed straight for the private room. Once inside, she relaxed. "I can finally enjoy my meal today. You have no idea how busy it's been since I became a formal employee. I've never left work so early like today."
Magnus laughed, "Then you should feast today. Which department are you in? Can you handle so much work?"
"The secretarial department," Ophelia answered. "I'm this busy only because I have to attend social events with my boss. Where's Seraphina? Did she say when she'll arrive?"
"She should be here soon." Magnus poured water for Ophelia, asking, "What's going on with you two? Why don't you talk to her directly? Did you have a falling out?"
"Not really," Ophelia said, propping her chin with her hand. "I asked Seraphina about her boyfriend, and she got angry. It's strange."
"I'll ask her later," Magnus said with a smile. "Order some food."
As they were chatting, the door to the private room opened. Seraphina entered, dressed in branded clothes, wearing sunglasses, and carrying a limited-edition LV bag.
She looked like a nouveau riche, a far cry from her previous plain and unpretentious image.
Seraphina removed her sunglasses. "Magnus, Ophelia, why do you look so surprised? Don't tell me you can't recognize me."
Indeed, Ophelia and Magnus were astonished. Seraphina changed so much.
"Seraphina, you're finally here. I'm starving," Ophelia said. "This is what I ordered. Do you want to add anything?"
"No, you order what you want to eat." Seraphina put on airs and even wiped her chair with a tissue before sitting down, her eyes full of disdain.
Seraphina had never been like this before. She used to be the most enthusiastic one in restaurants and had never carried such a disdainful expression.
But this time, from the moment she entered, Seraphina seemed self-conscious.
Ophelia was an office lady, and Magnus was a lawyer, so they were both adept at reading people and could easily see through Seraphina's pretense.
But they didn't say anything. After ordering food, Ophelia signaled with her eyes for Magnus to ask about Seraphina's boyfriend.
Magnus cleared his throat and said, "Seraphina, I heard you are dating someone. Shall we hang out with him sometime? We want to meet him."
"He's very busy and doesn't have time. Maybe when he's free," Seraphina replied.
The same excuse as always.
"What's his occupation? Why is he so busy?" Ophelia asked. "Seraphina, we're worried about you."
"Ophelia, I've told you before, he runs a company, and he's really busy," Seraphina said firmly. "He treats me very well. Look, this LV bag is a gift from him. It cost him 80 thousand."
Her words were full of boasting and vanity.
She had been constantly showing off since she arrived. Her necklace, her bracelet, her hairpin, her branded clothes... From head to toe, she was wearing different things from before, and each item was expensive.
Ophelia noticed the LV bag. It looked exactly like the one she delivered to her boss' girlfriend today.
Ophelia was surprised. "It's a gift from your boyfriend?"
"Yes," Seraphina boasted. "He gave me a black card to spend as much money as I want. This bag is a limited edition with only fifteen in the world. I'm telling the truth. Ophelia, you don't have to worry. I've really found a good man, and I'll be happy from now on." Seraphina was getting impatient.
Ophelia wanted to say more, but Magnus tugged at her clothes under the table, signaling her to stop.
Ophelia held her tongue.
Soon, the dishes were served. Ophelia and Magnus raised their glasses. "Seraphina, don't mind me being nosy, but I was just worried about you being deceived. I'm happy to see that you're happy. Congratulations on finding a good man."
"Congratulations," Magnus added.
Seraphina picked up her glass. "Thank you."
The once close friends now spoke with a tone of distance.
Throughout the meal, Seraphina didn't eat but only occasionally sipped water. Ophelia asked, "Seraphina, why aren't you eating?"
"I'm not very hungry. Don't mind me." Seraphina didn't want to eat these things made of cheap ingredients.
Just then, a server came in to deliver a dish and accidentally spilled some soup onto Seraphina's LV bag.
Seraphina screamed, "My bag! What are you doing? This is a limited-edition bag worth 80 thousand. Can you afford to compensate?"
