Chapter 753 It's an Illusion
Lily had heart surgery.
Tate asked, "Joe, when did he hit you up for that loan? Wondering if his family still needs help, maybe we can hook them up."
He was trying to ease Joe's suspicion.
Joe thought for a moment. "Can't say I remember exactly, maybe about a year ago? Right after that big hurricane. My own family was kinda hurting then, but I helped him out. He'd borrowed from a bunch of us, actually." He chuckled a little. "Luckily, his little girl's surgery went fine, so it wasn't all bad."
Caspian whispered to Tate, "That's when Ophelia vanished."
Tate pulled out a recent picture of Lily and showed it to Joe. "This Dylan's kid, Lily?"
Joe shook his head. "Nah, Dylan's girl don't look like that. She's a cutie, but different."
Tate knew the photo was of Ophelia, not Lily. She was setting up the next step.
"Maybe there's a mix-up in the records. Thanks, we won't bother you anymore," Tate said.
As they left, Tate glanced at the Cooper family's house. It looked like someone was home.
Tate didn't check and said to Caspian, "Let's go to where Dylan works."
Caspian said, "Finnegan told me Ophelia saved Lily, and it was Lily who died. Dylan couldn't handle it, so Ophelia became Lily. That guy just said Lily doesn't look like that, so maybe Lily is really dead, and this is Ophelia now."
"Let's hope so," Tate replied. "Let's check it out."
A DNA test would be the quickest way to confirm, but it could easily be detected.
While Tate was investigating, Finnegan went to the seaside alone. He stood on the rocks, looking out at the calm sea, feeling both restless and at peace.
Seeing couples taking photos, Finnegan thought of Ophelia. They had planned to travel the world and see the aurora, but never got the chance.
He took out his phone, filled with photos and videos of Ophelia. She had said she got through his accident by looking at his photos and videos. Now, he relied on them to ease his longing.
"Ophelia, is it really you?" he whispered, caressing her photo. He suspected the current Lily, but didn't dare confirm it.
The wind blew sand into his eyes, making them moist.
After a while, Finnegan stood up, took off his shoes, and walked barefoot on the sand, leaving footprints with each step.
He closed his eyes, extended a hand, and imagined walking with Ophelia. He smiled, feeling as if he could really feel her hand.
The wind carried Ophelia's voice. "Honey, look, dolphins!"
Finnegan opened his eyes and saw dolphins playing in the water, with tourists taking photos.
"Yeah, I see them. Ophelia, do you see them?" he asked, glancing to his side. But it was empty, and his eyes became moist again.
Ophelia didn't see them.
