Chapter 39 Realizing Her Inner Feelings
Ophelia was genuinely surprised by Seraphina's statement. She had no idea that Magnus had feelings for her.
"How is that possible, Seraphina? Magnus is a friend; he's family. It was absolutely impossible," Ophelia said, truly disbelieving.
She had always considered Magnus as family, and moreover, he was the only one who knew about her pregnancy. He even offered to be the godfather of her baby.
"Magnus always brings different gifts from his business trips, and yours are always the most expensive," Seraphina said. "He only buys gifts for me because he's afraid you won't accept his gifts and afraid you'll feel burdened. He only buys for me as an afterthought. Ophelia, you're so smart, so how can you not see what's in Magnus' heart?"
Seraphina's tone was filled with jealousy. She also had feelings for Magnus. They were all childhood friends, but Magnus only had eyes for Ophelia.
She had always been the green leaf to Ophelia's flower, a mere backdrop to Ophelia's brilliance.
From childhood to adulthood, Ophelia had always been the shining star. Under Ophelia's halo, she was never noticed.
So, Seraphina was both jealous and envious. She was sensitive and suspicious, often feeling inferior.
After Finnegan mistook her for Ophelia, Seraphina felt that this was something Ophelia owed her, so she impersonated Ophelia without guilt.
"Seraphina, it's impossible. Magnus has always treated us like sisters. He has never been biased. Hasn't he always bought the same gifts for all of us?" Ophelia asked.
Seraphina looked at her and asked, "Ophelia, are you afraid to believe me, or do you not want to believe me?"
At first, Magnus bought the same gifts for everyone, but later, he started buying things that Ophelia liked or needed, while Seraphina only received local specialties.
Ophelia was speechless. She was both – afraid to believe it and didn’t want to believe it.
After Seraphina left the hospital, her words kept echoing in Ophelia's ears.
When Ophelia returned to the ward, she was lost in thought. Finnegan had to call her twice before she heard him.
"Ophelia," Finnegan raised his voice.
Ophelia snapped back to reality, "Mr. Abbott, what's wrong?"
"I should be asking you that," Finnegan replied. "You went out for a bit and came back distracted. What's wrong?"
Ophelia wasn't in the mood to argue with Finnegan. She simply said, "I'm a bit tired."
There was a caregiver's bed in the ward. It seemed that Ophelia would have to spend the night there.
Noticing that she was indeed tired, Finnegan didn't say anything more.
At night.
Ophelia was resting on the caregiver's bed. The bed was somewhat hard and uncomfortable, but she had to make do.
After a tiring day, Ophelia quickly fell asleep.
Finnegan couldn't sleep due to the pain from his injuries. He initially wanted to chat with Ophelia, but seeing her asleep, he didn't have the heart to wake her up.
A gust of wind blew in, causing the temperature in the ward to drop. It was somewhat cold now. Ophelia subconsciously curled up, and Finnegan frowned, covering her with the blanket from his bed.
Ophelia wasn't a quiet sleeper and tended to talk in her sleep. Just as Finnegan covered her with the blanket, he heard her murmur in her sleep, "Baby, Mom will protect you..."
Finnegan was taken aback. "Baby? Mom?" Had he heard wrong? Ophelia was single, so why would she talk about babies and being a mom?
Finnegan leaned closer to listen more carefully.
Suddenly, Ophelia turned over, and Finnegan, feeling guilty as if he had been caught doing something wrong, quickly sat back on his bed.
Then, Ophelia murmured again in her sleep, "Finnegan, you can't die. If you die, what will I do..."
The car accident during the day left a significant psychological impact on Ophelia. Even in her dreams, Ophelia could still feel the terror from that moment.
Finnegan was taken aback. Was he really that important to Ophelia? Could this woman... possibly be in love with him?
Finnegan thought about the image of Ophelia crying uncontrollably when she thought he was dead, and a smile unconsciously crept up on his face.
The sleeping Ophelia gave off a sense of serene beauty. She was so beautiful... that he couldn't take his eyes off her. He couldn't help but want to get closer.
Finnegan just stared at Ophelia. There were no lights in the room, and the moonlight seeping in gave the entire ward a hazy feeling. This atmosphere felt somewhat familiar to him.
Ophelia's face gradually overlapped with the face of the woman who pleaded and moaned beneath him that night...
