Chapter 739 Get in the Right Position
Karen's face turned beet red. She glanced at Eugene and Barbara, feeling the heat of embarrassment.
Talking behind someone's back is one thing, but getting called out in front of everyone? Now everyone knew she was spouting nonsense.
Karen didn't even know if Tate grew up in the mountains. The family was always hush-hush about it.
Eugene and Barbara looked annoyed and shot Karen a glance.
It wasn't about looking down on mountain folks, but saying Tate came from the mountains could stir up gossip.
Eugene said, "Tate was taken from us when she was very young. Human traffickers..." His voice wavered for a moment before he continued, "She was adopted by a kind couple abroad. After they passed, she continued her studies overseas. That's where Raymond met her."
Eugene made up the story to give Tate a clean slate and show she was hardworking.
Tate didn't argue; she knew Eugene was trying to help her fit in without prejudice.
It wasn't entirely a lie. During her training at Moonlight Gate, she was on an island abroad, studying hard.
"Oh, well then! Pretty lucky," Jared said, giving Karen a look. "Karen, why'd you talk so carelessly?"
Karen's face twisted, and she could only laugh awkwardly.
Barbara, worried Karen might say something else dumb, smiled and said, "Karen, can you grab my phone from the car?"
Karen quickly left to dodge more questions.
Eugene and Barbara kept introducing Tate to everyone. The party was lively, and Raymond's acknowledgment boosted Tate's confidence.
When Karen came back with the phone, Tate was in the restroom. Karen, driven by some impulse, headed there too.
Tate was waiting. As soon as Karen stepped out, Tate stopped her. "Cut it out. I'm not about to get dragged down to your level, but you keep pushing my buttons, and I will put you in your place."
Tate was fed up with Karen's antics.
With no one around, Karen dropped the act and sneered, "Don't think just because Dad covered for you, no one knows your past. I saw you in prison."
"Yeah," Tate said calmly. "I saw you taking pictures at the prison gate. You ruined my dress and swapped the photos. Your petty tricks are low. You're hurting the Stewart family's reputation, not mine."
"You're the one shaming the Stewart family," Karen snapped, humiliated. She couldn't believe Tate knew about her tricks.
Karen blurted, "How did you know about the dress and photos?"
Tate hadn't seen her do it. Karen thought she was discreet.
As soon as she spoke, Karen realized she had just admitted to it.
Tate hadn't seen it, but after finding Karen's photos and knowing there'd be a photo display at the party, she figured Karen would pull something.
Tate didn't explain. "You better behave. If there's a next time, I'll make sure you can't stay in the Stewart family. Who do Mom and Dad listen to now, me or you? Is Raymond on your side or mine? It wouldn't be hard to find a reason to send you abroad."
Karen's face went pale with anger. "Oh, the mask is off, huh, Tate? You're here to take it all, aren't you? First Caspian, and now you're trying to worm your way into my parents' good graces. Well, think again, Tate. I won't let you."
"Then think carefully," Tate warned coldly. "You know what happened to Niamh. If you don't want the same fate, you'd better behave."
The threat was clear.Everyone knew about Niamh's fate.
A fake trying to compete with Ophelia, ending up with a death sentence in prison.
Niamh's jealousy of Ophelia led to her downfall.
Karen seemed to be on the same path. Tate wouldn't be lenient.Of course, this was just to scare Karen.
