Chapter 71 Try to Find a New Job
Ophelia didn’t respond immediately.
"It's all behind me now, Finnegan and I won't cross paths again." Ophelia managed a wry smile. "I'm really relieved the pregnancy scare turned out to be a false alarm. Otherwise, it would have been... pretty awkward."
If that had been the case, she couldn't have imagined getting along with Seraphina.
As things stood, her relationship with Seraphina had soured, to say the least, not to mention if there had actually been a child in the mix.
It finally dawned on Magnus that Ophelia had mistakenly thought she was pregnant with Finnegan's child.
However, Ophelia had been determined to keep that child, which clearly indicated that she had some feelings for Finnegan.
Otherwise, she wouldn’t have chosen to stay.
For a moment, Magnus didn't quite know what to say and decided to change the subject. "Have you had dinner? How about I whip up some pasta?"
"I've already eaten," Ophelia responded. "But you haven't, right? You relax for a bit. I'll cook for you."
“I can do it myself...”
"I've got it," Ophelia asserted, rising to head for the kitchen. "If I’m going to stay here a few days with a clear conscience, I need to pull my weight and do some work to cover the rent."
She would’ve offered Magnus rent money, but she knew he'd never take it. They had grown up together and known each other for years, so there was no point in being insincere. She preferred to contribute with household chores instead.
Magnus chuckled. "Alright, I'll go lock the front door. I forgot to lock it earlier. I'm looking forward to tasting your cooking tonight."
Hearing Magnus was about to lock the door, Seraphina quickly ducked into the stairwell.
After she heard the door closing, Seraphina emerged from the stairwell. Clutching the handle of her suitcase, envy burned in her eyes.
She envied Ophelia, who, no matter where she went, always seemed to be liked by men, with Magnus eternally supporting her from the shadows.
'Despite his feelings for Ophelia, Magnus never confesses them, choosing to protect her quietly from the sidelines, careful not to add to her burdens. His care for her is so delicately tender.
Meanwhile, I only became Finnegan’s girlfriend under the guise of being Ophelia, something Finnegan resents. Moreover, in Magnus’s eyes, I’m nothing but a woman without virtues, devoid of any redeeming qualities.
It is all because of Ophelia—Ophelia is just too dazzling, stealing the spotlight and rendering everyone else virtually invisible,' Seraphina thought.
Seraphina didn't go back to look for Ophelia. She couldn't afford to let Ophelia and Magnus know she had been kicked out. Wouldn't that just be handing them a reason to laugh at her?
With a silent vow, Seraphina swore to herself that she would make Magnus and Ophelia regret how they treated her today. Clutching her suitcase tightly and harboring a seed of hatred in her heart, Seraphina walked away.
Meanwhile, inside the room.
Ophelia had quickly cooked up some pasta for Magnus, who ate it with great satisfaction.
"Ophelia, there's this ancestry site, I've signed you up," Magnus suddenly chimed in. "A lot of orphans have found their birth parents through it."
"You did?" Ophelia said. Her heart had always harbored the same yearning—to find out why her own parents didn't want her anymore.
She wondered if she might have been kidnapped by traffickers, or if her parents had insurmountable secrets. Deep down, Ophelia craved a family of her own.
"I signed us both up, along with Seraphina," Magnus said. "With all the advancements in tech and information, we just need to update your details, and it could really help. There's this DNA database now. Parents who've lost their kids upload their information, their DNA, and then it's just a matter of matching things up."
Of the three, Magnus was the most passionate about the search, always using various resources to find his biological parents.
Ophelia asked, "Magnus, have you ever imagined what your parents are like?"
Magnus shook his head with a smile. "I've tried, but it's hard to picture them. How about you, Ophelia?"
"I can't picture them either," Ophelia confessed, shaking her head with a chuckle. "No memories of them, no idea if they're even looking for us. We'll just have to go with the flow."
They were hopeful but not consumed by the pursuit.
"You’ve been busy with work before, and now that you’ve quit, take a few days off. There’s no rush to find a new job," Magnus advised. "As long as I have something to eat, I'll make sure you won't starve."
"Okay."
Ophelia wasn't really expecting to find work quickly anyway. Finding a job in A City was tough. The market was just too competitive, brimming with fresh graduates every year.
However, the next day, Ophelia received an invitation to interview at her long-desired company, Parks Corporation.
