Chapter 353 Locked Room Murder
Ophelia didn't even dare to go to the police station to confirm the body.
It was as if, as long as she didn't prove it, Seraphina was still alive in this world.
How did she and Seraphina end up like this?
Ophelia's complexion was not good, her lips bloodless. Because of the emotional upheaval, the baby in her belly was also affected, causing a faint pain in her lower abdomen.
"Ophe, sit down first, don't think about it." Finnegan told Ophelia. He helped her sit down and hugged her. If it weren't for Ophelia, Seraphina's death wouldn't have affected him at all. But Seraphina's death impacted Ophelia, making him worried.
Leaning in his warm embrace, Ophelia couldn't stop trembling all over, tears rolling down from the corners of her eyes.
It was unknown how long it took for Ophelia's emotions to calm down. Seraphina had no other relatives in this world. If Ophelia didn't go to confirm, who else could?
Later, Finnegan accompanied Ophelia to the police station and saw Seraphina in the morgue. Seraphina's body was stiff, and she looked peaceful in death, without any signs of pain.
When such a cold, stiff corpse was placed in front of her, Ophelia could no longer suppress her emotions. She covered her mouth with both hands and burst into tears. Finnegan quickly hugged her, burying her head in his chest to prevent her from looking.
Landon covered Seraphina with a white cloth and signaled Finnegan with his eyes to step outside for a talk.
Finnegan supported Ophelia as they walked out and into the office. Landon poured water for the two of them and said, "According to the autopsy report, Seraphina's time of death was around 2 a.m. last night."
This time was exactly when Seraphina confessed, and Niamh was also brought in for questioning.
Finnegan asked, "What was the cause of death?"
Landon glanced at Ophelia and Finnegan, and said, "Poisoning. But currently, there are no suspects, and the source of the poison hasn't been found, which is very strange. After I interrogated Seraphina last night, she was taken aback. According to the guards, there was no movement after Seraphina went in. Surveillance footage was also checked, and there were no suspicious individuals. No one came into contact with or approached the area where Seraphina was held."
In other words, this was a locked-room murder.
Niamh was detained during this period, so she was not a suspect. The entire police station staff became Niamh's alibi witnesses.
The police haven't even identified the poisoning method or the poison source, leaving Landon puzzled by the case.
Even though they knew why Seraphina died, without evidence, it was useless.
Ophelia sat there, blankly listening. Suddenly, she heard a noise outside and turned her eyes to look out the window. A plane was flying by.
A memory surged in Ophelia's mind, which was of her and Seraphina at the orphanage.
At that time, they were ten years old, and it was Seraphina's birthday. They sat on the orphanage's rooftop, watching planes. She remembered Seraphina's wish to become a flight attendant.
Later, Seraphina failed her exams and didn't get into aviation school. With no background and insufficient ability, Seraphina started working after graduating from a community college.
Seraphina often said she would get rich, become a successful businesswoman, and leave her mark on history. She wanted to write an autobiography, start a company, and have college graduates work for her.
Seraphina often cited examples of successful people who, despite not having high academic qualifications, became big bosses. Seraphina dreamed of such a day because she hated being poor.
After leaving the police station, Ophelia called Magnus. "Seraphina is dead."
Her tone was light, and her eyes were empty.
On the other side, Magnus was trying to persuade Riley to return home and had a conflict with Tobias. Hearing such bad news was like a bolt from the blue.
"Ophelia, say that again? What happened to Seraphina?"
"Seraphina is dead." Ophelia repeated mechanically, "Seraphina is dead and will never come back."
By the end, Ophelia's voice was choked, and it felt like a thorn was stuck in her throat, making it painful to utter a single word.
