Chapter 161: Mother-in-law Comes to Find You
Boss Damon suddenly changed his attitude and not only bought breakfast but also returned the money for the previous afternoon coffees to Magnus. This made him feel extremely anxious.
Magnus quickly stood up. "Damon, thank you. I will work hard. I'll go to Southen Group right away to discuss the cooperation."
Magnus was afraid that his boss might use an excuse to fire him. He couldn't lose his job.
Damon said attentively, "I'll leave that to Holden. You don't need to go. I see that you've been tired recently, you've even lost weight. Magnus, it pains me to see you like this."
As he spoke, Damon reached out and touched Magnus's chest.
"Damon...," this action greatly startled Magnus.
He worried that his boss had some other intentions.
Magnus had a refined appearance, while Damon was notorious for being open-minded, or rather, he didn't discriminate between men and women.
"Magnus, you're so nervous. You're even sweating. Let me wipe it off for you," Damon took out a handkerchief to wipe Magnus's sweat. However, Magnus instinctively took two steps back.
Damon stopped and smiled. "Magnus, what are you afraid that I'll do? I'm not interested in you like that. You're just low-key. You've been at the law firm for so many years but have kept it well hidden."
Magnus was completely confused. "Damon, what do you mean?"
He was worried that he had made another mistake.
Damon smiled and said, "Quit pretending, I know all about it. I never expected you to be so close with Mr. Abbott from Abbott's Corporation. I saw you both drinking together last night, Magnus. You've been hiding it well. Oh, by the way, I submitted a promotion recommendation letter for you. You're now Lawyer Magnus, not just an assistant to Han."
It finally dawned on Magnus that it was because of Finnegan's connection. He had stumbled upon this opportunity by accident, thanks to Finnegan.
Upon hearing that he had been promoted and could now take on cases himself, Magnus didn't feel as happy as he had imagined. He had worked so hard without receiving recognition from his superiors. His efforts were not as valued as Finnegan's mere reputation. Instead of joy, Magnus felt defeated in his heart. His hard work seemed worthless compared to relationships.
He didn't want to rely on Finnegan's reputation, nor did he want to hold Ophelia back. It was his male pride that made him want to achieve what he wanted through his own efforts.
"Damon, Mr. Abbott and I actually..." Magnus started to explain.
"No need to say it, I already know. You, my friend, have hidden it well," Damon interrupted with a smile. "Southern Group and Abbott's Corporation are not comparable. I heard that Abbott's Corporation is also hiring a team of lawyers externally. Magnus, say a few good words to Mr. Abbott about our law firm."
"Damon, I'm afraid that won't work, really, I..." Magnus tried to express his concerns.
"Magnus, stop being modest. You were able to drink with Mr. Abbott and even have him personally help you get into the car. Your relationship is definitely not ordinary. This small favor will surely be granted," Damon interrupted again, saying, "I'll be waiting for good news from you. We'll have a celebration banquet then."
At that moment, other colleagues from the law firm approached boss Damon, and Magnus didn't have a chance to explain himself. Damon got busy and left first.
Magnus was in a difficult situation. The chances of securing Southern Group were already slim. How could he possibly secure Abbott's Corporation? His law firm's size and reputation were far from qualified.
Having just obtained a marriage certificate with Finnegan, Magnus didn't have the heart to use Ophelia's connection to ask for a recommendation from Finnegan.
Meanwhile, Ophelia, who had taken a day off, returned to work at the company. The employees were still discussing the Sybil incident. It was bound to become a hot topic after coffee breaks. There were no longer any news articles online about the Sybil event; Parks' public relations team was indeed efficient.
Ophelia turned on her computer to start working when suddenly an internal phone call came through. It was Dovie calling her internally, asking her to come to the office. Ophelia thought it was work-related, so she went. When she pushed open the office door, she realized that Celia was also there. It was clear that Celia was here because of her. After spending two peaceful days with Finnegan at the hotel and not showing up for work yesterday, Celia had become anxious and had come to the company to intercept her.
