Chapter 576 Early Retirement
Lloyd, looking like a peacemaker, dutifully helped Susan upstairs to rest.
Susan, still fuming, clutched her chest and gasped, constantly complaining, "Jude is just so foolish. Getting a divorce at his age will make him a laughingstock."
"Mom, have some water and take a break." Lloyd helped Susan sit on the sofa in her room and poured her some water. "There's no use crying over spilled milk. Scolding him won't help."
"Can I not complain a bit?" Susan sighed. "Lloyd, the family has been in a mess. Jude and Celia's thirty-year marriage ended just like that. Finnegan is still in the hospital after a failed surgery. Warmie and Ophelia are still young. There are so many sufferings in this family. I'm going to church to pray tomorrow. You come with me."
"Alright, Mom, I'll go with you tomorrow. Don't be angry." Lloyd maintained a calm exterior.
Finnegan, in the hospital, was well aware of what was happening at the old mansion. Finnegan knew all about Jude's divorce, Susan's anger at Jude and Lloyd's act of filial piety.
Ophelia, holding Warmie, watched Finnegan peeling an apple and said, "It's a pity Lloyd isn't in showbiz. He's quite the actor."
Finnegan smiled. "It's a family tradition."
Ophelia realized and laughed. Indeed, Finnegan's acting wasn't bad either.
Warmie, in her arms, eyed the apple in Finnegan's hand, sticking out her little tongue to taste it. Her big and bright eyes were fixed on it. She waved her hands and feet excitedly.
Ophelia laughed. "Warmie is such a little foodie."
Such a young baby couldn't eat apples yet. She didn't even have teeth.
Finnegan brought the peeled apple to Warmie, letting her lick the apple's flavor, which made Warmie very happy.
Her tiny hands tried to hold the apple, but they were too small. She got frustrated and slapped the apple, trying to bite it with her toothless mouth, only managing to taste a bit of sweetness.
This scene made Finnegan and Ophelia laugh.
Warmie was their little bundle of joy.
Seeing her parents laugh, Warmie laughed too, not knowing why but just wanting to join in the fun.
Warmie's adorable look brightened Ophelia's mood, and she kissed Warmie on the cheek.
Finnegan was moved and kissed Ophelia on the cheek.
Ophelia felt a bit embarrassed, thankful that Warmie was still young.
"I'll hold her. You have some fruit." Finnegan reached out and took Warmie, letting Ophelia rest.
Ophelia remembered something and said, "Didn't you say Lloyd is taking Susan to church to pray tomorrow? Should we send someone to protect her secretly?"
"No need. Lloyd is very cunning. If he goes out, there will be people from Moonlight Gate following him. Being discovered would be counterproductive," Finnegan said. "Before the Abbott family falls, Lloyd will make sure Susan is fine. He won't harm her. Ophelia, remember what I told you. Transfer the company's assets and create an internal deficit."
"I've arranged everything. Don't worry." Ophelia raised an eyebrow. "I used to be your capable secretary. This is a piece of cake. I've transferred the money to a bank in Albion. With my dad Wilder there, it's safe."
"Wilder is reliable," Finnegan said. "Once this is over, Ophelia, we can retire and enjoy life."
Money couldn't be earned forever. They already had enough money.
Ophelia was surprised. "Finnegan, you're only in your thirties, yet you want to retire?"
"Life is unpredictable. You never know what will happen next second." Finnegan gently squeezed Warmie's little hand. "Watching Warmie grow up and having more kids with you sound pretty good."
Ophelia laughed. "Who told you I'll have more babies with you? I just gave birth to Warmie yet you're already thinking about a second one."
"Having more kids means Warmie will have her little siblings to keep her company," Finnegan said. "In our most energetic years, let's do something more meaningful, like seeing the aurora you talked about, and exploring the stars and the sea."
People often talked about the future, but no one knew when that day in the future would come or if it ever will.
Ophelia looked at Finnegan tenderly and nodded, "Okay."
She knew that after surviving a near-death experience, Finnegan had a different perspective on life and living. Enjoying the beautiful things in life was fundamental.
While Ophelia and Finnegan talked about dreams and aspirations, Niamh was still figuring out how to fill her appetite.
