Chapter 696 Becoming Air
Warmie really needed her mom. At this age, every kid should be held and pampered by their parents.
Even with her eyes closed, Warmie wasn't asleep. She was just missing her mom and could sense her presence.
Finnegan didn't disturb them and headed downstairs.
The news of Ophelia's return quickly reached Raymond.
At first, he thought the citywide ads were just because Finnegan missed Ophelia too much, but it turned out she really came back.
As a cop, Raymond immediately called Finnegan to confirm.
Tate was anxious too and listened in.
When it was confirmed she was back, Raymond was shocked. After hanging up, he asked Tate, "Wanna go to the Abbott estate and check it out? Today's your last day off."
Tomorrow morning, Tate had to go back to prison.
"As long as she's alive, no need to visit," Tate said. "Tonight, I'll cook a couple of dishes. Mom and Dad haven't tasted my cooking yet."
"Alright, I'll help," Raymond said. He had taken a long vacation to make up for previous leaves.
The two of them went into the kitchen to start dinner.
Raymond said, "Thinking about it, the whole thing still feels unreal. A typhoon, the deep sea, and she actually came back alive."
Tate said, "The world is full of wonders."
"Tay, when you go back, behave well. In six months, I'll get you out and restore your freedom," Raymond said. His current wish was for Tate to gain her freedom soon.
"It doesn't matter where I am," Tate said. "It doesn't make much difference to me. Raymond, you don't need to plan for me."
Tate knew Raymond wanted to plan for her, and he might have to gamble with his own future.
"It's not the same. I want you to stand in the sunlight," Raymond said, looking at Tate with loving eyes. "Mom and Dad are so happy you're back. I want our family to always be like this."
"Raymond, Mom and Dad want grandkids. When are you gonna find a girlfriend?" Tate cracked a rare smile, boosting Raymond's mood.
It was so rare to see Tate smile.
Raymond knew Tate's emotional knots were tied to Aria and Ophelia. Now that Ophelia was back, Tate was delighted.
Raymond said, "I was busy with work before and didn't have time. Now that I'm on a long vacation, Mom has introduced me to a few girls. I'm still getting to know them. I'm not good at being romantic so girls don't like me. Besides, my job also scares off quite a few girls."
While beating eggs, Tate comforted, "You just haven't met the right person."
"What about you?" Raymond asked, leaning on the kitchen counter. "Are you avoiding Caspian because of Karen?"
Tate and Karen were both involved with the same man, which gave Raymond a headache.
Karen liked Caspian, while Caspian liked Tate, and Raymond, as the older brother, didn't know how to deal with it.
"No," Tate said. "He and I are not suitable."
Seeing that Tate didn't want to talk about it, Raymond didn't bring up the fact that she had insomnia on her first night back because of Caspian.
As a cop, Raymond was naturally good at reading people. He didn't know the exact reason for Tate's feelings, and he didn't ask.
While they were cooking, Karen came back. Hearing laughter from the kitchen, she walked over and saw Tate and Raymond cooking together. She said sarcastically, "Tate, you've been back for so many days, and this is the first time you're cooking. Tonight is really special. Tate, what made you decide to cook tonight? Feels like a farewell dinner."
Karen knew very well that Tate was going back to prison tomorrow, so she was happy. Once Tate left, she might not come back again until her sentence was over.
Raymond frowned. "Karen, mind your own business. Call Mom and Dad and ask when they'll be home."
"Okay," Karen said, stopping her sarcasm and giving Tate a cold look.
Tate ignored Karen completely.
