Chapter 8 Seduction
On the first day of moving into Orchid Garden, Seraphina was thrilled. She showered early, put on new pajamas, and waited for Finnegan to return.
She waited so long that she almost fell asleep. Finally, she heard something.
Just as she was about to enter the bedroom, she heard a familiar voice. "Lina, please take care of Mr. Abbott for the night. We'll be leaving."
It was Ophelia's voice.
Seraphina had lived with Ophelia for over twenty years, and she knew Ophelia's voice all too well.
'Why would Ophelia be in Finnegan's room?' she thought.
It soon occurred to Seraphina that Ophelia was Finnegan's secretary, so it made sense that Ophelia came to Orchid Garden.
Hearing that Ophelia was leaving, she hurriedly hid in the adjacent room. Only after the sound of footsteps descending the stairs faded did she come out and head to the master bedroom where Finnegan was.
"Lina, you can leave Mr. Abbott with me. It's late, and I'm sure you're tired. Don't exhaust yourself."
Lina Hopkins, who was in her fifties, had been the Abbott family's maid for over twenty years. Howard Abbott, Finnegan's grandpa, asked her to come to Orchid Garden to take care of Finnegan.
Lina glanced at Seraphina and knew what Seraphina was thinking. She smiled kindly, "Thanks, Ms. Kingsley."
The second Lina left, Seraphina locked the door. Then she walked to the bed and said tentatively, "Mr. Abbott?"
The drunken Finnegan didn't move or make a sound at all.
Seraphina was a bit frustrated. After all, she wasn't the one with him that night. She was well aware that if she didn't wanna be kicked out someday, she had to develop feelings with him as soon as possible. And to do that, sex was the quickest way.
Now that he had no response at all, she decided to seduce him. She figured that men would still have physiological reactions even though they were drunk. And once they had sex, everything would be easier.
However, just as she leaned closer to him and was about to reach out, he suddenly opened his eyes and pushed her away with a pained look.
"Get out," he said.
His stern command frightened Seraphina so much that she fell to the floor, her face pale. "Mr. Abbott..."
Hearing her voice, Finnegan sobered up a bit. He glanced at her, his eyes scarlet. "Why are you here? Oh, that's right. I almost forgot. Atticus brought you over today."
Seraphina got up from the floor, looking very aggrieved and frightened. "Mr. Abbott, you were drunk, so I wanted to change your clothes for you."
"Don't come any closer." Finnegan frowned. "Do I smell lilies on you?"
"Yes. I use lily-scented body wash. Mr. Abbott, what's wrong?" she asked, puzzled.
Seraphina smelled of mint before, but she didn't use cheap body wash tonight. She took one of the maids to the mall during the day to buy expensive lily-scented body wash, because she found the scent of mint cheap, which was constantly reminding her that she was poor.
She also had her hair done to impress Finnegan.
Finnegan said coldly, "Nothing. Get out. Didn't Atticus tell you that you weren't allowed to come up here without my permission? Don't make such a stupid mistake twice. If I see you here again, leave."
Among all the scents, the one Finnegan hated the most was that of lilies. Whenever he smelt it, it always dragged him back to painful memories.
Half the reason Finnegan asked Seraphina to move into Orchid Garden was because she smelled mint. And now, Seraphina had a new haircut, and her hair was curly and maroon. Also, her scent had changed. He could no longer find any trace of the woman that night in her.
If it weren't for the resume, he would have doubted whether she was that woman at all.
Finnegan looked very serious, intimidating even. Seeing that, Seraphina didn't even dare to breathe too loudly. She nodded meekly. "OK... I'm sorry, Mr. Abbott."
He frowned at her timidity and couldn't help but think of Ophelia, who seemed meek and respectful but wasn't at all annoying.
He thought, 'Ophelia is just pretending to be meek. She's smart in fact. On the contrary, Seraphina is a coward inside out. Women like Seraphina aren't my type.'
After Seraphina left, he pinched the bridge of his nose and lay back down. Perhaps the room was too stuffy, or the wine was kicking in. Anyway, he felt inexplicably irritable, and the lovemaking scenes from that night came back haunting him non-stop.
They were hazy, vague, beautiful, and wild, mixed with her pleas and moans...
Finnegan couldn't help but wonder, 'Is Seraphina really the woman from that night?'
