Chapter 234 The Wager
Finnegan's words were like ice, extinguishing all of Lynn's hopes. She had returned full of joy, only to discover that Celia had deceived her and that Ophe was pregnant. She didn't even have a chance.
Finnegan was speaking such heartless and merciless words. It felt like a knife in Lynn's heart.
Clutching her chest, Lynn was about to say something when she suddenly felt a sharp pain, and her vision blurred.
Finnegan caught her and asked, "What's wrong?"
"Take me back to the hotel. The medicine is at the hotel," Lynn said with some difficulty, breathing heavily in pain.
Finnegan could only suppress his anger and bring Lynn back to the hotel first.
Once in the room, Finnegan placed Lynn on the bed and asked, "Where is the medicine?"
Lynn's face had turned pale, indicating the severity of her condition.
"In the drawer beside the bed," Lynn weakly replied, struggling to speak.
Finnegan found the medicine, skimmed the instructions quickly, and gave Lynn two pills.
Lynn swallowed them in one gulp, and Finnegan handed her some water. "Are you having an angina attack?"
Leaning against the headboard, Lynn slowly recovered after taking the medicine. She nodded weakly and said, "This pain is nothing compared to the one I felt when I heard about your marriage and Ophe's pregnancy. Finnegan, is there really no possibility for us? Is it truly over?"
Lynn looked at him sorrowfully, her eyes filled with hope.
Finnegan's expression remained emotionless as he said, "Lynn, I think you've misunderstood. We never had a beginning, so how could we end?"
"No beginning?" Lynn couldn't believe it as she sat up, propping herself up. "It's not true. You did love me. Although you never said it, I knew, and everyone else knew, that we had feelings for each other. If it weren't for your mother's interference, we wouldn't have ended up like that. You even said before, 'If you have any problems, come to me.' Doesn't that mean you still love me?"
Finnegan furrowed his brow and said, "Lynn, you've misunderstood. I have never loved you or had any such thoughts. If I have caused any misunderstanding, I apologize. As for the promise I made to you a few days ago, it was simply to make amends for my mother. That is something I truly owe you."
"Amends?" Lynn's emotions became more intense. "That's not true. How can there be no love? We were recognized as a couple back then. Are you disgusted by me?"
Lynn threw herself into Finnegan's arms, hooked her hands around his neck, and pushed him down onto the bed, eager to kiss him.
Finnegan turned his head to avoid her and grabbed Lynn's shoulders to push her away, speaking with a tinge of anger, "Lynn, please have some self-respect."
After pushing Lynn away, Finnegan stood up, his face cold, and said, "I warn you for the last time, don't appear in front of my wife again. If anything happens to her, I won't spare you."
These piercing words made Lynn feel as if a thousand arrows were striking her, and anger started to well up inside her.
Lynn looked at him despairingly and desolately. "Finnegan, this is the first time I've seen you angry, the first time I've seen you defend a woman. But if it weren't for your mother arranging for someone to do what they did to me back then, would we be together? Your mother ruined me, Finnegan. How do you plan to repay what you owe me?"
Finnegan owed Lynn this, and because of this, he showed some patience toward her.
If it were someone else, they would have been thrown out long ago.
From beginning to end, Finnegan never liked Lynn nor considered her as a potential future wife. Celia misunderstood and acted recklessly, resorting to letting some bad guys Lynn in order to force her to leave.
When Finnegan found out about it, it was already too late.
On the second day of that incident, Lynn left.
For a young girl in her early twenties, being humiliated was a devastating blow to Lynn.
It was also something Finnegan owed Lynn.
Finnegan furrowed his brow and asked, "What do you want?"
Lynn replied, "I want to move into Orchid Garden for three months. I want to see just how deep your feelings for Ophe are. Do you dare to make this bet? If you and Ophe are still doing well after three months, then I will leave New York and never return, and we will be even. But if you can't do it, then marry me."
