Chapter 28 Mistaken for a Couple

Finnegan was succinct. "Two days. We are going to inspect the Azure Peak project in Starview. There's something wrong with the accounts."

Ophelia understood. The Azure Peak project was managed by Finnegan's uncle, Mason Abbott, a side branch of the Abbott family. If the accounts were amiss, a covert investigation was necessary.

Ophelia didn't say anything more.

As the car left Starview and merged into the highway, Ophelia felt a bit awkward sitting in the passenger seat while her boss drove.

The silence between them was heavy and oppressive.

Noticing a bottle of water in the glove compartment, Ophelia sought to break the silence. "Mr. Abbott, would you like some water?"

"No, thank you," Finnegan replied, his features cool and collected.

Ophelia quietly put the bottle back and glanced at the dashboard. They were traveling at 80 miles per hour, but the car remained steady.

Finnegan was that kind of person, masterful and in command of everything.

Ophelia placed her hand on her abdomen, a strange feeling rising in her heart.

Tentatively, she asked, "Mr. Abbott, when are you and Ms. Kingsley getting married?"

Gossiping about the boss's private life was taboo.

Ophelia usually wouldn't dare to do it, but the words just slipped out.

Finnegan raised an eyebrow and glanced at her, "I have no plans to marry."

"No plans?" Ophelia was surprised.

Was it just a fling?'

'They were already living together in Orchid Garden, yet he had no intention of marriage?' she thought.

Ophelia recalled what Linda had said about Ms. Kingsley not being a rich heiress.

The last time she saw Ms. Kingsley at Orchid Garden, it was just a silhouette. She was dressed wearing something revealing, looking seductive.

'Could it be that Ms. Kingsley was just a kept woman?' she thought.

For someone of Finnegan's social status, the future Mrs. Abbott would certainly be someone of equal standing.

Realizing that Finnegan was just playing around, Ophelia had a poorer impression of him.

Silently, she told the baby in her belly, 'If you're a boy, don't ever be a playboy like your father.'

Finnegan countered, "Ms. Sinclair, didn't you also prioritize your career and not plan to marry before thirty? Does dating always have to lead to marriage?"

Ophelia was speechless. Men in their prime like Finnegan, especially at the peak of their appeal, were unlikely to be tied down by marriage.

Ophelia forced a smile. "Just a casual question."

There were few cars on the highway, and Finnegan drove fast. Ophelia started to feel carsick, a growing discomfort.

Holding it in as long as she could, she finally saw a rest area approaching and blurted out, "Mr. Abbott, can we stop at the service area? I'm feeling carsick."

Finnegan glanced at Ophelia, who looked pained.

Only those who have experienced motion sickness knew how awful it was.

Without a word, Finnegan steered the car toward the service area. As soon as he pulled over, Ophelia rushed out and dashed toward a trash bin.

"Ugh!"

Ophelia vomited violently, as if she would bring up bile.

Finnegan brought her a bottle of water and handed it to her.

"Thank you," Ophelia said, taking a sip to rinse her mouth, her eyes brimming with tears.

Finnegan also handed her a pack of tissues.

The unpleasant smell of vomit made Ophelia a bit embarrassed. "Sorry, Mr. Abbott."

Nearby, a couple was dealing with a similar situation. The wife was also vomiting from motion sickness, and the husband was full of complaints. "I told you not to come, but you insisted. Now you're carsick, aren't you? You threw up in the car, and we'll have to get it cleaned, which isn't cheap."

The wife, already miserable, snapped back while pointing at her husband and then at Ophelia, "Look at that couple. She is just as sick, and he's so considerate, handing her water and tissues. You are not helping at all. Just keep nagging!"

Ophelia and Finnegan were lost for words.

With flushed cheeks, she glanced at Finnegan to gauge his reaction.

Finnegan remained expressionless, though something stirred within him upon being mistaken for Ophelia's husband.

The wife, after scolding her husband into silence, asserted herself, "I'll drive from now on."

A woman's greatest sense of assurance came from herself.

The couple left, bickering all the while.

Feeling a bit awkward, Ophelia was about to say something when Finnegan suddenly spoke, "Let's rest a bit before we go. I have motion sickness pills in the car."
After boss's baby, she Escape
