Chapter 742 The Sober Susan
Wayne was genuinely confused by Finnegan's reaction. How could Finnegan not recognize his own partner?
Even if they looked alike, Lily wasn't Ophelia. Wayne could easily tell them apart. Why couldn't Finnegan see that?
"Mr. Abbott, I get it now. I was curious before, and since I was in the area for business and we were classmates, we had a few meals together."
Wayne half-joked, "Mr. Abbott, I have no intentions towards your wife. Lily and I, we just...caught up a few times, that's all. She mentioned feeling a little...suffocated, maybe? Look, she doesn't remember the past. You say she's your wife, then she stays here as your wife. That's your business. But you watch her so closely, love her so fiercely...maybe she can't breathe."
Finnegan's eyebrows furrowed. "She told you that?"
"Yes, to you, she's Ophelia, your wife. But she sees herself as Lily. So, some things need to be taken slowly." Wayne paused, gathering his courage, sat down and said, "with all due respect, Mr. Abbott, with your status, are you really worried about not having women around? I admire your commitment to your wife."
Finnegan didn't want to harm Wayne. He was concerned about Lily and believed Wayne had no other intentions towards her.
Lily's request for a divorce must have been for other reasons. Wayne was just an excuse.
At the Abbott mansion, ever since Celia saw Lily holding hands with another man, she felt uneasy.
She told Finnegan, but he was in denial. She told Jude, but he didn't believe her either and told her not to meddle, firmly defending Lily.
Warmie had been staying there for a few days, and neither Finnegan nor Lily had come to visit, making Celia feel even worse.
Celia watched Warmie playing with the neighbor's kids, laughing brightly, and felt a pang of sorrow for her.
Warmie usually didn't have playmates. The neighbor's grandson had been staying there recently, so the two kids played together every day.
Seeing Susan's car return, Celia told the nanny to look after Warmie and walked towards Susan's car.
"Mom, you're back," Celia said.
Susan got out of the car and glanced at the kids playing in the yard. "Warmie seems very happy today."
"Kids are happiest when they have playmates, you know," Celia said with a smile. "It would have been lovely, wouldn't it? If Finnegan and Ophelia had another child back then. A little brother or sister..."
It was just a casual remark.
Susan said, "They're still young. They can have more children."
Thinking about Lily's betrayal, Celia's face darkened. Supporting Susan into the house, she said, "Ophelia and Finnegan are having issues. Ophelia has a lover outside. I don't think they can have more children."
"Don't talk nonsense. Ophelia isn't that kind of person," Susan scolded. "Rumors can't be taken seriously. Don't let them reach Finnegan."
"Finnegan knows. I told him, but he's stubborn and doesn't believe it," Celia said excitedly. "Mom, I'm not lying. I saw it with my own eyes. Why doesn't anyone believe me? Ever since Ophelia came back after the accident, she's been acting strange. She's not the same Ophelia. People change..."
"Enough," Susan reprimanded. "You're getting more and more outrageous. Celia, if you want this family to stay peaceful and Finnegan to live happily for a few more years, keep your mouth shut."
Susan's words left Celia confused. "Mom, what do you mean? I don't understand."
"Don't forget, when Ophelia had the accident, Finnegan almost lost his life," Susan said. "Now, this Ophelia, no matter what she's done, at least she can keep Finnegan stable and give him something to hold on to. Do you understand?"
Celia shook her head honestly. "I don't understand."
Celia truly didn't understand, especially the implication behind "now this Ophelia."
Susan sighed, realizing she couldn't rely on Celia.
Susan said, "Just don't interfere. Keep your mouth shut and don't ask or say anything else. This isn't our business."
"Mom, even if I wanted to interfere, I can't now," Celia said. "Look how long Warmie has been here, and they haven't come to see her even once. I'll just take care of Warmie. Poor Warmie, unloved by both parents."
Susan was speechless.
