Chapter 61 Miscarriage

Ophelia was on the verge of hysteria. How could she possibly stay calm? The father of her child was dating her best friend.

She seized Seraphina's hand, her voice pitching high in agitation, “Seraphina, tell me! When did you start dating Finnegan? Was he the wealthy boyfriend you've been talking about all along?”

It was almost too much for Ophelia to bear. The disbelief clawed at her insides, and yet the pieces of the past seemed to fall into place. She recalled that unsettling glimpse of a figure resembling Seraphina at Finnegan's house which she had, at that time, refused to entertain as true.

Worried about the slip of potentially volatile information, Seraphina quickly intervened. “Ophelia, I'm sorry, I never meant to hide it from you. Please go home, and I'll explain everything to you some other day.”

All Seraphina wanted was to coax Ophelia into leaving. She had given Ophelia the abortion pill, so Ophelia was supposed to be at her home or possibly at the hospital. What was she doing at the club?

Seraphina was confused. Ophelia had taken the pill, so why did she seem perfectly fine? Was the medicine fake, or perhaps ineffective?

Their exchange left Atticus, who was nearby utterly bemused. He felt it would be inappropriate to interject.

Seraphina’s admissions had sent a chill through Ophelia’s heart—Seraphina indeed was Finnegan's girlfriend.

When Ophelia remained rooted in place, Seraphina pulled her aside. “Ophelia, just go home for now, okay? Let's talk later. Finn is drunk, and I need to take him back to Orchid Garden.”

This last statement was a deliberate lie concocted by Seraphina.

Ophelia stared hard at her. “When did this happen? When did things start between you and Finnegan? Why did you keep it a secret from me?”

She vividly remembered how Seraphina had once asked her if she could ever fall for Finnegan, warning her not to harbor such feelings.

It turned out that Seraphina herself had fallen for Finnegan.

"With Finnegan's status, I was worried it might not last — I was too embarrassed to tell you," Seraphina stammered. "I was waiting for everything to be more stable, maybe even after we got married, to break the news."

Her reasons were flimsy, but they were credible.

Struck by the mention of marriage, Ophelia found herself at a loss for words, uncertain of what to say.

"Ophelia, we’re friends. You’re happy for me, right?" Seraphina said. "I've found such a wonderful boyfriend, so you should be thrilled for me."

But Ophelia wasn't thrilled, not at all. If only it weren't for that one night she had with Finnegan, she would wholeheartedly celebrate Seraphina's marriage to him.

Out of everyone, why did it have to be Seraphina who was dating Finnegan?

"I’d better go check on him; he’s not in a good place after drinking too much. I'm the only one who can take care of him," Seraphina said with purpose before quickly walking towards the private room.

Left behind, Ophelia watched Seraphina's retreating figure, feeling a mess of emotions. She should be happy about her best friend's fortune in love.

Soon, Seraphina helped an inebriated Finnegan out, with Atticus rushing over to assist them.

Walking out of the club in a daze, Ophelia wandered the streets, feeling lost and alone. A bitter cold wind made her shiver.

She had not gone far when a sharp pain struck her lower abdomen, and her legs felt sore.

She sat down on the curb to rest and suddenly felt a warm flow between her legs. Panic set in.

Was she bleeding?

Ophelia spotted a public restroom and hurried to check. The sight of red on her underwear sent her into fear and confusion.

With her stomach still aching, she wondered if she was having a miscarriage.

Ophelia frantically rushed back outside and attempted to hail a cab, but catching a ride at this hour proved to be a real hassle.

She could not afford any delays. Deep down, Ophelia worried about the safety of her unborn child.

Just then, a flashy sports car pulled up beside her. "Miss Sinclair, what are you doing here? The boss has already let someone from Orchid Garden take over. You're not exactly proactive about cutting in, are you? You look terrible. Are you sick?"

"Caspian, please, I need to get to the hospital, fast." Ophelia said through the pain, "My stomach hurts, and I'm bleeding."

Hearing the word 'bleeding', Caspian's playful demeanor vanished. He swung the car door open, "Get in, now."
After boss's baby, she Escape
