Chapter 578 The House is Haunted
The living room was empty, with no one inside.
'So strange,' she thought.
Emerson was puzzled and muttered, "Didn't I just hear someone's voice?"
Glancing around, she noticed the landline phone had fallen to the floor.
Emerson walked over to pick it up. Niamh was hiding behind the sofa in the dimly lit living room.
Niamh had heard the door open earlier and didn't have time to run upstairs, so she hid behind the sofa.
As Emerson picked up the phone, a clap of thunder sounded outside, followed by a flash of lightning that illuminated the entire living room for a few seconds.
In those brief seconds, Emerson saw a shadow on the floor.
It was the shadow of Niamh hiding behind the sofa. But it was just the shadow, no person in sight.
This horrifying scene made Emerson scream and faint.
Niamh, hiding behind the sofa, was also frightened. She was scared of thunder as well as the sudden storm.
Niamh stood up and looked at the unconscious Emerson on the floor. She wanted to make Emerson disappear forever.
But doing so would cause a big commotion and attract the police.
Niamh ignored Emerson, deleted the call history from the landline, and went up to the attic.
The rain soon started pouring down, accompanied by thunder and lightning. Niamh hid under the covers, too scared to come out, with the lightning reflecting on the window, terrifying her even more.
The storm lasted all night.
The next day, Emerson woke up to find herself in the living room, and the memories of last night came flooding back, sending chills down her spine.
Emerson hadn't clearly seen the shadow from last night.
Before she could think further, Lori shouted from outside, "Emerson, come out and see! Isn't that your dog? Oh my, how cruel!"
Emerson went outside and saw the corpse of her dog in the yard. Its head was smashed to pieces, covered in blood.
The heavy rain from last night had washed away the dirt, revealing the buried body of the dog.
Emerson almost fainted again.
Lori cursed, "Whoever beat a dog like this must be a psycho."
Emerson was heartbroken and terrified, unable to look at the dog.
The dog was dead and buried in her yard. Thinking about the strange events in the house recently and the shadow from last night, Emerson was too scared to stay in the house.
After dealing with the dog, she nervously went to the hospital to find Ophelia.
Emerson had been mentally distressed these days. Ophelia had just finished breakfast with Finnegan in the ward and handed Warmie to Finnegan. She was about to go to Abbott's Corporation when she met Emerson in the hallway.
"Emerson, what brings you here?" Ophelia was surprised.
Emerson stammered, "I want to go back to my hometown for a few days, just letting you know."
Emerson was too scared to stay in that house.
"Sure, no problem," Ophelia said. "You can stay in your hometown for as long as you need. You'll still get paid, Emerson. Don't worry. You can come back anytime."
Ophelia thought Emerson was worried about not getting paid, so she reassured her.
"Thank you," Emerson said gratefully, hesitating before adding. "To be honest, there's something wrong with that house. I'm scared and can't stay there."
"What's wrong with it?" Ophelia asked, puzzled.
"It's haunted," Emerson said. "My dog disappeared mysteriously, and this morning I found it buried in the yard with its head smashed. Last night, I saw a shadow in the house but no person. At night, there are noises from the pipes, and things in the kitchen keep disappearing."
Niamh needed to shower and use the bathroom, and the upstairs pipes connected to the downstairs. Whenever water was used, the pipes would make some noise, which scared Emerson.
Emerson had checked upstairs and found nothing, making it seem like the house was haunted.
Ophelia didn't believe in such things. "Emerson, it's the modern age. Don't scare yourself. There's no such thing as ghosts. Someone must be playing tricks."
"But I live alone," Emerson said. "I checked and found nothing."
"Alright, you go back to your hometown first. I'll check the house when I have time," Ophelia said, ending their conversation.
