Chapter 722 Changed
Barbara sighed, "Yeah, Caspian rolled up. They had a pact. When Tate returned, how could Caspian leave her hanging? Karen, I can't play fair in this. Emotions just do their own thing, you know?"
Barbara held Karen's hand, trying to comfort her. "There are plenty of good guys out there. We owe Tate a lot. Karen, don't be mad at Tate. Cut her some slack, okay? Whatever you need, we'll make it right."
Karen felt a surge of resentment. In the past, she would've thrown a fit.
But now, Karen knew she couldn't compete with Tate. The family backed Tate, and Caspian's heart was with her. She had no leverage.
Karen, trying to be understanding, hugged Barbara's arm and said sweetly, "Mom, am I that unreasonable? If Tate likes Caspian, I'll let her have him. I'm fine with it. We're all family."
Barbara breathed a sigh of relief and smiled. "Karen, you've really grown up."
"Mom, let's throw a welcome party for Tate, make it a big deal," Karen suggested. "Let's surprise her."
But Karen had darker plans. She wanted to ruin Tate's reputation in front of everyone, letting them know Tate had been in prison.
Tate took a cab to the Abbott family. She didn't have Ophelia's contact info anymore, so she had to go to the house.
Tate rang the doorbell, and after a while, the nanny answered. "Who are you looking for?"
"I'm looking for Ophelia," Tate said. "Tell her Tate is here."
"Wait a moment, I'll ask Mrs. Abbott," the nanny said, not letting her in right away.
The nanny went upstairs. Lily was playing with Warmie. She was spending less time with Warmie on purpose to reduce Warmie's dependence on her, so when she left one day, two-year-old Warmie wouldn't be too sad and would eventually forget her.
"Mrs. Abbott, there's a woman named Tate outside looking for you," the nanny said at the door.
"Tate?" Lily hesitated. "You stay with Warmie, I'll go check."
Handing Warmie to the nanny, Lily went downstairs.
Tate was still outside. Lily opened the door and looked her over. "Hello."
"I'm Tate," Tate said. "I used to be your bodyguard. I came to see you."
Lily didn't remember Tate.
"Come in." Lily invited Tate in and poured her some water. "Sorry, I don't remember much from before."
"Yeah, I know," Tate said, looking at Lily. She missed Ophelia. Sometimes she thought, if Ophelia could come back from the brink of death, how great it would be if Aria were still alive.
Tate asked, "Is Finnegan not home?"
Lily nodded. "He went out."
They chatted sporadically. One didn't remember the past, and the other was naturally quiet, so there wasn't much to talk about.
While they were chatting, a noise came from the garage. Finnegan had returned.
Tate noticed Lily was very indifferent. Even when Finnegan walked in, she didn't get up or greet him.
Even ordinary couples would greet each other when the husband came home.
From their behavior, Tate guessed there was a problem in their relationship.
Finnegan was surprised to see Tate. "You're here."
Tate greeted, "I just got out today and came to see Ophelia."
While Tate and Finnegan talked, Lilygulped down the glass in front of her, not even looking at Finnegan. Living together, they were like strangers.
It seemed they were in a cold war.
It was a one-sided cold war from Lily towards Finnegan.
Seeing Lily's attitude, Finnegan hesitated, his eyes dim. In front of guests, he didn't show his disappointment and said, "You chat with Ophelia. I'll go check on Warmie."
With that, Finnegan went upstairs.
From start to finish, there was no interaction with Lily.
Tate glanced at Lily again and couldn't help but ask, "Did you guys have a fight? You weren't like this before."
Lily smirked. "Like you said, that was before. People change. Only Finnegan is still stuck in the past."
