Chapter 209 A Scheme to Get the House

After carefully examining the property certificate, Tobias said, "I'll take it to Jett to have a look."

Jett was in the next room. Tobias handed Jett the property certificate and said, "Jett, can you help me take a look? Is this the property certificate for this house? Whose name is on it?"

Tobias didn't even recognize the name "Magnus," so he had to ask Jett for help.

Jett looked surprised after taking a look. "This house belongs to Magnus. He bought it, Tobias. Didn't he say it was rented? It says Magnus here, but isn't that his current name? This house is 1,300 square feet and belongs solely to Magnus. He's guarding against us."

Magnus never intended to guard against his family; he didn't want any trouble. In his heart, he only considered it temporary and just a rented house with Ophe.

If it weren't for solving Serenity's enrollment problem, and if Tobias hadn't been insisting on moving to a bigger house, he wouldn't have accepted this house.

As soon as Tobias heard that Magnus was guarding against them, his face turned dark. "I knew he didn't grow up with us, so how could he have any feelings? He couldn't sincerely take care of us. Look at this, he's guarding against us. He bought the house but told us it was rented, pretending to be poor in front of us."

Jett, who had some experience in the world, said, "Tobias, the housing prices in New York are not low. Ordinary people can't afford it. If Magnus can afford such a big house, his income must be good. I've seen it on TV; lawyers can make several million dollars a year."

Upon hearing this, Tobias became even angrier, but at the same time, his eyes lit up. "He can earn that much?"

Jett said confidently, "Maybe even more. That's how it's portrayed on TV. Lawyers earn a lot from commissions. If a case involves millions or even billions of dollars, just a few percentage points are enough to buy land for generations in our hometown."

Jett had never seen the broader world, so his understanding came solely from TV.

"It seems like we came to the right place in New York." Tobias slowly sat down and began to calculate. He looked around the house and said, "I wonder how much this house is worth."

Jett instigated Tobias. "Why don't you go to a real estate agency and ask for an estimate? Then we'll know how much this house is worth. Magnus would be really capable if he could earn so much money."

Although it was phrased as praise, his tone was sour.

Jett was envious of Magnus' ability to make so much money. Upon hearing this, Tobias said, "Alright, I'll go now. There's a real estate agency right at the entrance of our neighborhood, and I'll go and ask."

Riley replied, "I don't think that's a good idea. It wouldn't look good if Magnus came back and saw it. Let's just put the property certificate back."

Tobias, always a chauvinistic man, snapped at Riley and left with the property certificate.

After about half an hour, Tobias returned with an excited face and said to his eldest son, "Jett, we're going to be rich. I asked around, and I found that this house was worth thirteen million dollars. That's so much money! In our hometown, you could buy a whole building with that."

Jett's eyes lit up while hearing this. The way he looked at the house was as if he was looking at a goldmine. They were living in a goldmine now.

"Thirteen million dollars. That's more money than you could spend in a lifetime. If we were to convert it to cash, we would need several suitcases." Greed filled Jett's eyes, and he casually spoke, "If this house is mine, I will sell it and exchange it for money. With one million dollars, I could buy a villa in our hometown. The remaining twelve million dollars will be enough for a lifetime. If this news reaches our village, we will be living in a mansion. How dignified will that be? Living in New York, who would have known that this house is worth so much?"

Tobias overheard Jett's words and instantly had an idea. Tobias was someone who cared about his reputation and had vanity. If people from his hometown knew that he was living in a mansion, it would greatly increase his status.

"That's not a bad idea." Tobias agreed with a smile. "I've never lived in a mansion in my whole life. The houses in the county town are not bad. Many people from our village have bought houses there. Before, your auntie's family bought a house in the county town for her son and called me to share the good news. They were showing off as if buying a house was such a big deal. It made them look capable. They used all of their savings just for the down payment. We can directly buy a mansion in full payment and live in a spacious and bright place."

The most important thing was pride. If this news reached the village, they would be able to stand tall and even win back some points in front of their relatives.
