Chapter 136 The Insatiable Wolf
Deep down, Magnus still believed that with hard work, everything would turn out alright.
Seraphina pocketed the money without a hint of remorse, promising that she would indeed work hard.
The two of them headed upstairs. When Magnus saw Tobias and Riley watching TV on the couch, he called out, "Dad, Mom, I'm going to start on dinner."
Tobias remarked with an air of certainty, "You're a grown man; why are you cooking? Let Seraphina do that. That's your woman's job, not something you spoil her out of doing. Kitchen chores, that’s woman's work."
Living there under the same roof, it was natural for Tobias to assume that Seraphina and his son were a couple.
Seraphina was taken aback upon hearing this. What kind of dated thinking was that?
Riley also chimed in with her instructive tone, "Seraphina, as a woman, you should know how to take care of your husband. How could you let your man do the household work?"
Magnus interjected, "Dad, Mom, Seraphina isn’t my girlfriend; she's just a friend who's staying here for a while."
His parents didn't seem convinced when Jett called out from another room, "Mom, I'm thirsty."
"I've got it," Riley responded immediately, hurrying to get water for her son.
Tobias noticed that Seraphina was still not moving and, with a stern look, barked, "Seraphina, get moving and start cooking. You city folks are so full of it. Since time immemorial, when has it not been a woman's job to handle the housework?"
Seraphina looked displeased but turned to head to the kitchen, thinking she might as well do something for Magnus just for the night. After all, she wouldn’t be waiting on these folks any longer after this.
One couldn't blame her for being heartless. She once had feelings for Magnus, but considering his current situation, she naturally wouldn't consider him a potential partner now.
Seraphina always had dreams of marrying into wealth, still holding out hope for a grand entry into high society.
Magnus wanted to help in the kitchen but was stopped by Tobias. "Magnus, come over here; I need to have a word with you."
Tobias spoke authoritatively, steeped in rigid, patriarchal views.
"What is it, Dad?" Magnus moved to sit with him.
Tobias spoke bluntly, "I've heard that General Hospital in A City is pretty good. Let's take your brother there for a check-up tomorrow. Also, start looking for a preschool for Serenity, as your little niece will be coming in a few days."
Magnus was surprised. "You're bringing the kid over?"
"Of course, we're family. Just treat Serenity as if she were your own daughter. And about the house—it's a bit small. We should get a bigger one. You're making good money, and your mom and I have worked hard all our lives; it's time we enjoy some of it..."
Tobias made an emotional plea, his words laced with guilt-tripping, "You're the mainstay of the family now, Magnus, you have to take care of us. Otherwise, we'll be out on the streets. Remember, when your mother was giving birth to you, your foot came out first. It was a difficult labor; she nearly lost her life..."
Magnus listened without protest, his heart softening at the sight of Tobias's gray hair and the anxious demeanor of Riley, who had just stepped out of the room.
"Okay, I'll take my brother to the doctor's tomorrow."
Magnus knew the weight of the promise he had made, and he silently bore it. He had longed for his family, sought them for so long, and now that they were reunited, he cherished it deeply.
The next day, Magnus took time off work to accompany Jett to the hospital.
Seraphina, ever the clever one, made an excuse about going to work early but didn't head to the job at all. Instead, she took the money Magnus had given her, strolled through the mall, splurged on clothes, and indulged in a lavish meal. Encountering a salesperson promoting credit cards, she couldn't resist the temptation and signed up, even spending beyond her means.
Elsewhere, Ophelia got up late, blaming Finnegan, who was insatiable, demanding attention every night.
Ophelia could barely lift herself out of bed, having overslept. She hurried through her morning routine, chastising, "Finnegan, if you keep this up, go back to Orchid Garden and don't come back. I'm going to be late because of you."
"I'll drive you," Finnegan said with a smile, planting a kiss on her cheek, "It's on my way to the west side of town anyway."
