Chapter 111 The Birthday Party
Niamh felt utterly embarrassed. After all, she was the heiress of Parks Corporation, the sole inheritor of the corporate empire.
Men were lining up for her hand, yet Finnegan wouldn’t even spare her a glance. On paper, their families were a perfect match.
However, Niamh didn’t care for any other suitors. In her heart, only someone of Finnegan’s caliber was worthy of her.
At the distressing call from her daughter, Dovie also felt surprised, “How could that be? Finnegan wouldn’t normally behave so rudely. He must have had his reasons. Niamh, I've told you not to be too forward. Let mom handle the marriage proposal. Why did you go to Orchid Garden?”
“I’ve been kicked out now,” Niamh said, frustrated and worried. “I have my birthday next week, and I’ve already told everyone that Finnegan will attend my birthday party. What if he doesn’t come? How embarrassing will that be? My friends will laugh at me.”
Niamh tried to reassure her, “He will definitely be at your birthday party. Today, Finnegan’s mother personally called me and confirmed they would both be there to celebrate with you.”
Hearing those words, Niamh felt much better. She chalked up Finnegan's absence to him truly feeling under the weather and not wanting to see anyone. It might have been that Atticus was just pretending to comply but actually acting against Finnegan's wishes.
Every year for her birthday, Dovie would put in a lot of thought, preparing a grand birthday party.
Because she had lost Niamh for fifteen years, Dovie had been doing her utmost to make up for the lost time.
After finishing her phone call, Dovie finally went to her meeting. She stepped out of her office and ran into Ophelia, waving her over, "Ophelia, could you please get the documents ready for the meeting and take them to the conference room?"
"Yes, Ms. Parks," Ophelia responded.
She immediately turned and got busy with the task, while Dovie watched her leave, feeling for some unknown reason that Ophelia was quite likable.
Today, Ophelia was in a great mood. She approached every task with enthusiasm and vigor.
Just the thought of Finnegan made her wish time would pass faster so she could clock out and visit him at Orchid Garden.
Being apart for a few hours made her understand the feeling of pining as if it had been an eternity.
Ophelia felt it was magical. This was her first time in love, and it filled her entire world with color.
During lunch, just as she sat down to eat, her phone rang.
Finnegan had sent her a message on WhatsApp.
Finnegan: [Eating yet?]
It was a simple message, but Ophelia's heart raced inexplicably upon reading it, every cell seemed to be dipped in honey.
This was probably what love felt like.
Ophelia: [Eating.]
Ophelia deliberately waited three minutes before replying, playing a bit coy, thinking that even in a relationship, it was good to play a bit of 'hard to get'.
This little strategy of Ophelia's was quite effective. During those three minutes, Finnegan checked his phone incessantly, eager for her reply.
As soon as the message notification chimed, Finnegan picked up his phone right away.
Caspian, sitting across from him, couldn't stand it anymore, "Finnegan, love is making you mushy. You're a thirty-something, man. How is it you're acting like a lovestruck teenager? This isn't even your first love."
Upon learning that Finnegan had been injured, Caspian made a point to visit him at Orchid Garden. Caspian was in for an unexpected revelation—Ophelia had agreed to be Finnegan's girlfriend, making him the first to know about Finnegan's new relationship status. The excitement was almost too much to handle.
Finnegan lifted the corner of his eye and dropped a bombshell, "Ophelia is my first love."
Caspian's jaw dropped as he stared at Finnegan, about to bring up Grace, the one who left years ago, but Finnegan preemptively referred to Seraphina, saying, "She doesn't count."
Miscommunication ensued, as Caspian thought Finnegan was talking about Grace, but despite being on different wavelengths, their conversation somehow made sense. Finnegan's dismissal led Caspian to believe he didn't wish to dwell on the past, so he didn't press further. Instead, his curiosity piqued, he asked, "Finnegan, how on earth did you get Miss Sinclair to agree? Why choose Miss Sinclair? Is this a fling or something serious?"
Finnegan, after replying to a message from Ophelia and picking up his tea with practiced ease, said, "She was the one at Ritz-Carlton back then, Ophelia."
