Chapter 142 He's Coming
Finnegan drove off to find Ophelia, and Caspian, coming to his senses, followed behind.
He felt responsible for the mess and needed to see how it would unfold.
Though Caspian didn’t dare ask directly about Grace's departure, he was sure it had something to do with Celia.
...
Ophelia was sitting in a police station, a place she never imagined she'd end up in her life.
At that moment, Ophelia felt helpless. Someone without connections or status like her stood no chance if Niamh decided to pin the blame on her. In this world, as long as one didn't stir up darkness, life could be bright. However, encountering untouchable forces could unleash an unfathomable despair and obscurity.
Ophelia leaned against the cold wall, gazing up at the small window above. It seemed as if the rain outside was getting heavier, and the sky was growing darker by the minute.
Ophelia sat huddled in the corner, her hands clutching her knees, with Celia's words echoing in her mind.
For how long she sat there, she wasn't sure, but eventually, the sound of hurried footsteps reached her ears before the iron door swung open. When she looked up, there was Finnegan, drenched and with an expression of anxious urgency, striding toward her.
Ophelia stood up in astonishment. At the sight of him, a sudden surge of emotion made her feel like crying.
"Ophe," he said, ignoring the fact that Caspian stood behind him, and pulled Ophelia into his arms, his voice rough with emotion, "I'm sorry, I'm late."
Caspian tactfully turned away.
Discovering that Ophelia had been brought into the police station on suspicion of plotting harm against Niamh, Finnegan had rushed over immediately.
This was the first time Caspian had ever seen Finnegan show such anxiety about a woman.
Every reaction from Finnegan that day turned Caspian's understanding of him upside down. Before, Caspian had believed nothing could melt Finnegan's icy exterior, but Ophelia's presence had turned the ice to fire.
Thanks to Finnegan's bail, Ophelia didn't have to spend the night in the police station.
Upon leaving the police station, she got into Finnegan's car with a tumult of feelings swirling inside her. Caspian, understanding the situation, had wisely made himself scarce. Ophelia sat in the passenger seat, and Finnegan drove.
Watching Finnegan focused on the road, Ophelia wanted to say something but hesitated.
Suddenly, Finnegan grasped her hand as if he knew what was on her mind and spoke first. "No matter what my mom says, don't worry about it. All you need to do is trust me."
He knew everything.
Ophelia had many questions on her mind, but suddenly, there was nothing she wanted to ask anymore. His coming to her rescue, his comforting her before she even spoke, what more could she say?
All she had to do was trust him.
"Okay," Ophelia said, squeezing their entwined hands. "Finnegan, if one day, you want to end things, please promise to tell me."
She was ready to leave him. Just as what she had told Celia, she harbored no illusions about joining the Abbott family.
Finnegan sighed heavily and gently ruffled her hair, saying, "There you go overthinking again. Did my mom talk to you and say we weren't a good match, offering you money to leave?"
Ophelia was taken aback. He knew exactly what had been said during her conversation?
He watched her reaction intently and said, "I know my mom. She's done this before. Ophelia, I, Finnegan, don't need anyone else's approval to choose my partner. As long as we both consent, that's all that matters. We shouldn't care about idle gossip."
'Has done this before'...
Indeed, Celia had also dealt with other women who had entangled themselves with Finnegan.
After hesitating for a long time, Ophelia finally asked, "Is it true that you and Niamh have an engagement?"
Finnegan replied, "The engagement is real."
Upon hearing this, Ophelia felt a chill in her heart.
Then he continued, "That was an arrangement made by my grandmother with the Parks family. My grandmother now suffers from Alzheimer's and is constantly thinking about having a granddaughter-in-law. However, while the engagement between our families is real, I never said I would marry Niamh. The Abbott family has plenty of members to fulfill such commitments."
Ophelia's emotions were like a roller coaster, soaring and plunging.
Alzheimer's, an engagement...
Suddenly, Ophelia remembered the old lady from the Parks Corporation... Could it be...?
"Did your grandmother go to the Parks Corporation to find Niamh?"
Finnegan admitted, "Yes, she went there, and I had Linda bring her back."
Ophelia was silent.
What a coincidence.
"So that old lady was your grandmother."
Finnegan asked, "You've met my grandmother?"
