Chapter 12 Take Advantage of You
Ophelia once said that she had a fiancé. And that became the reason for her probation completion and promotion at work. She was worried that Finnegan would see through her lies and fire her, so she had no choice but to keep lying. However, she couldn't help noticing that the air inside the car somehow felt colder after what she said, and Finnegan's expression seemed off.
She wondered, 'Did I say something wrong again?'
Considering that most companies did not favor female employees who got married or had children soon after joining, Ophelia quickly added, "Mr. Abbott, don't worry. I don't plan on getting married before I'm thirty. I wanna focus on my career now. I'll work hard for you and help you to make Abbott's Corporation grow stronger."
Stronger?
Finnegan's lips twitched slightly at her words. He gave her a sharp glance, "Do you think Abbott's Corporation is not strong enough?"
Ophelia laughed nervously, "Well, I mean, Abbott's Corporation is one of the largest companies. With you in the seat, the company will have a bright future."
Ophelia cursed inwardly at his intentional comments.
Seeing her attempt to please him, Finnegan seemed to be in a better mood, and he leaned back in his seat to rest.
Ophelia breathed a sigh of relief and felt less chilly inside the car. It seemed that agreeing with Finnegan was the right way to deal with him.
The car soon arrived at Bright Moon Tower. Ophelia followed Finnegan obediently. It was Finnegan's private gathering and she only realized it as she stepped into the room.
It was filled with young men and women. Some were talented and capable young people, some were from wealthy families.
Ophelia wondered why Finnegan asked her to tag along.
"Boss, you finally come," a young man in his twenties came over. He was a bit chubby but still quite handsome—a sweet guy.
Ophelia recognized him; he was the only son of the Hawthorne family, Caspian Hawthorne, known as one of the four most charming young rich men of Yorkhaven along with Finnegan.
Finnegan nodded slightly. "It's your birthday, so I'll stay for a while."
Finnegan and Caspian were close friends for years, and if it weren't for Caspian's birthday, he wouldn't be caught dead in such a place.
"I get it." Caspian chuckled and tapped his chest. "I heard a lady is staying at Orchid Garden now. Boss, you've got a girlfriend and why don't you bring her over? She must be stunning..."
While Caspian was chattering away, Finnegan took a seat and called out to Ophelia at the doorway, "Come sit with me."
Only then did Caspian notice Ophelia. He stared at her in disbelief, "Is she the one? Boss, I never knew that this was your style. Such a plain girl. Where did you two meet? Man, she's a rare one."
Ophelia was rendered speechless.
He was so sharp-tongued. No wonder he was Finnegan's friend.
Before Ophelia could speak, Caspian began introducing himself, "Hi, I'm Caspian. I'm so curious. You've got to tell me how you got him."
Ophelia put on a fake smile, "Hi, I'm Ophelia, Mr. Abbott's secretary."
"Secretary?" Caspian looked between Ophelia and Finnegan, "Boss, so she's not your girlfriend?"
Finnegan shot him a cold glance, "Did I say she was?"
Caspian sat next to Finnegan, laughing sheepishly, "Boss, you've got some special taste. She's one of a kind. So, when will you bring your girlfriend over?"
Finnegan glanced at him. "Are you tired of your life?"
In other words, did he have a death wish?
Caspian shut up right away.
Ophelia glanced at Finnegan from the corner of her eye. What a tough and reserved man!
"Come on, let's drink," Caspian got the hint. "Boss, I brought my best wine here today. I've been saving them for years."
Caspian poured a glass for Finnegan. Looking at it, Finnegan's brows knitted slightly, and he glanced at Ophelia, "Sit down and drink."
"Mr. Abbott, I can't drink too much." Ophelia was nervous. She feared that drinking too much would lead to big mistakes. Just like last time at the gathering, she ended up sleeping with Finnegan.
Finnegan's brow furrowed slightly, "So? Are you worried that if you get drunk, I'll take advantage of you?"
Ophelia blurted out without thinking, "No, I'm worried that if I get drunk, I'll take advantage of you."
