Chapter 18 What Does Her Boss Want?
Ophelia and Magnus were both concerned about Seraphina's change, so they decided to follow her.
After they left the restaurant, Ophelia saw Seraphina getting into a luxury car. The driver was from Orchid Garden, now tasked with chauffeuring Seraphina exclusively.
"Quick, Ophelia," Magnus said as he pulled up.
Ophelia opened the car door and got in. "Follow that black Mercedes."
Magnus stepped on the gas. "That Mercedes is worth over 500 thousand. The guy Seraphina is dating is so rich. But why is she hiding him from us?"
"Who knows what she's thinking," Ophelia muttered. "Keep up, don't lose them. Once we meet this mysterious guy, we'll know what's going on."
Magnus followed Seraphina's car out of the city toward an affluent neighborhood.
The road seemed to be more and more familiar to Ophelia. She just came here today.
Ophelia remarked casually, "My boss also has a villa up here in Orchid Garden. Seraphina's boyfriend must be quite well-off to live in this area."
The residents of Orchid Garden were either rich or noble.
The car ahead turned a corner. They were halfway up the hill where the roads were winding and traffic sparse.
Magnus followed until suddenly, their car died.
"What happened?" Ophelia asked.
"I'll check it out." Magnus got out, opened the hood to inspect, and said, "The engine is down."
Ophelia came out and looked up the hill. "Well, I guess that's it for today. I'll call for a tow truck."
"No need. Get back in the car. It's cold out here," Magnus said. "I'll call a friend to come over and send you home."
It wasn't easy to hail a cab here, and Magnus didn't want Ophelia to take a ridesharing service alone late at night.
Just then, some car was coming uphill, its headlights sweeping over. Magnus instinctively stood close to Ophelia to protect her.
It was Finnegan's car with Finnegan sitting in the back seat.
As the headlights swept over them, Atticus in the car immediately told Finnegan, "Mr. Abbott, I think that's Ms. Sinclair."
Finnegan had already noticed.
The man standing beside her was the one at the company's building from yesterday.
Her fiancé.
Atticus muttered to himself, "What's Ms. Sinclair doing up here in the middle of the night? Who's that man with her? Her boyfriend?"
The driver chuckled, "There's a grove up ahead. Many couples do their exciting stuff in there at night."
Finnegan remained silent with his eyes closed, his face a bit cold.
Atticus glanced at him. Knowing that Finnegan had no interest in his subordinates' personal lives, Atticus kept silent.
The car turned and entered Orchid Garden. Finnegan got out and asked Atticus in a cold voice, "Something's wrong with the proposal of Southwest Project. Who's in charge?"
"It's Ms. Sinclair," Atticus replied.
"Have her redo it now. The stakeholders need it as soon as possible," Finnegan said, walking straight into the living room.
Atticus stood there, slightly confused. He thought, 'That project isn't urgent. Mr. Abbott just praised the proposal earlier today. Why did he change his mind all of a sudden?'
However, he worked for his boss and had to obey his boss, so he called Ophelia immediately. "Ms. Sinclair..."
Ophelia was surprised to receive the call so late, being asked to work overtime.
But with the salary she was being paid, Ophelia could only agree. "Okay, Mr. Montgomery. It might take a while. It's hard to get a cab here."
"Don't worry, our driver Ben is coming down to pick you up," Atticus said. "I saw you and your boyfriend on the hillside just now."
Ophelia then realized why the car that had just passed seemed familiar.
"Alright, Mr. Montgomery, I'll wait here." Ophelia hung up and told Magnus, "There's something wrong with the project proposal. It's urgent, so I have to redo it now. You can go back. Mr. Montgomery is sending a driver to pick me up. My boss lives in a villa in Orchid Garden. It's very close."
Magnus was surprised. "You have to work this late in your boss' villa?"
"Yes. Mr. Montgomery and the others are also there. It seems the proposal is really important." Ophelia didn't think much of it.
Magnus was a man and knew all too well about men. Ophelia was attractive. Working in the villa of a male boss in the middle of the night could lead to speculation.
"Ophelia, maybe you should tell your boss..."
Magnus hadn't finished his words when Ben's car arrived. "Ms. Sinclair, please get in."
