Chapter 26 Feel Guilty in Front of Finnegan
Magnus was the first to know about Ophelia's pregnancy.
Ophelia treated Magnus like family. This time, when she didn't know who else to turn to, she confided in him.
But when Magnus heard the news, he was astonished, his hand under the table subconsciously gripping the ring box tight. Glancing at Ophelia's belly, he asked, "Pregnant? Who's the father? When did you have a boyfriend? How come I've never heard about him?"
"I don't have a boyfriend," Ophelia said cautiously. "Well, forget about the baby's father. Magnus, I went to the hospital for a check-up today, and you're the first one who knows about it. I wanna keep the baby. What do you think?"
Magnus was too shocked, and the enormity of the situation was hard for him to grasp.
He composed himself and put away the ring box, his surprise making him stutter slightly, "This... Well... Ophelia, are you going to be a single mother? Who's that bastard? If he doesn't wanna take responsibility, I'll go and teach him a lesson right now."
The thought of Ophelia being mistreated filled Magnus with rage.
"Calm down. Calm down." Ophelia grabbed Magnus' hand. "Don't get worked up. Nobody has mistreated me. Actually I started it. It's my fault."
Magnus was even more shocked.
'What?' he yelled inwardly in disbelief and his expression went blank.
"Ophelia, what do you mean?" Magnus was utterly confused.
Ophelia, somewhat embarrassed, touched the back of her neck, not daring to meet Magnus' eyes, and said, "Just that I drank too much. You know the look of me being drunk. It was an accident. Anyway, it's all in the past. Now we're talking about the baby. Magnus, we came out of the orphanage together, and you're like my brother, so I'm sharing this news with you. I wanna keep the baby."
Hearing this, Magnus thought, 'Brother? She only sees me as her brother?'
Even though he didn't harbor much hope, Ophelia's words still made him feel a profound sense of loss and sadness.
They had grown up together, and he had become accustomed to Ophelia's presence. Now that Ophelia was suddenly pregnant, he was completely dumbfounded, unable to accept the news.
Magnus couldn't help wondering, 'How could she be pregnant? How? And why? Well, if Ophelia's really... Then, do I still have a chance?'
But at the same time, he felt a sense of relief, grateful that he hadn't confessed his feelings just yet, or else he might not even be able to remain friends with her.
Magnus didn't say anything else. He just stood up, went to the kitchen, grabbed a beer, and gulped down half the bottle in one go.
Ophelia didn't stop him. She just sat in the chair, waiting for him to digest the news.
After drinking, Magnus calmed down a little and felt a bit better. Then, he asked seriously and earnestly, "Ophelia, are you sure you wanna keep this child?"
Ophelia answered firmly, "I'm sure. I've always resented my parents for abandoning me, so I can't bring myself to abandon this baby."
Magnus understood as they were both orphans and could comprehend the feeling of being discarded.
He remained silent for a moment and then made a significant decision in his heart. He said, "Okay, keep the baby, and I'll be the godfather."
What Magnus really wanted to say was, "I'll be the baby's father, I'll be with you, and we'll raise the baby together. Because I love you, I'll also love your baby."
Ophelia was touched. "Magnus, thank you. You're such a nice man."
Magnus suppressed his own thoughts and bitterness, managing to smile, "Ophelia, we grew up together, childhood friends. I'll always be here for you. Whatever you wanna do, I'll be on your side."
Since Ophelia didn't wanna mention the baby's father, Magnus wouldn't ask.
Ophelia poured herself a glass of juice, feeling moved. "Thank you. You're now my baby's godfather."
She had thought Magnus might scold her or look down on her, but he chose to support her unconditionally.
She felt so lucky to have such a confidant in her life.
Magnus raised his glass. Ophelia didn't know that just being by her side was enough for him.
She saw him as a friend, but he saw her as his destination.
With Magnus' support, Ophelia felt even more courageous and less hesitant.
That night, she thought through the path ahead, like how to raise the baby, how to live her future life, and how to balance work. She had to consider everything.
The next day, Ophelia swapped her high heels for flats and went to work as usual.
She entered the company right on time, as always. In the elevator, she glanced at her watch, thinking, 'Good, I'm not late.'
Just as the elevator doors were closing, they suddenly stopped and opened again, and Ophelia looked up to find herself face-to-face with Finnegan as he entered the elevator.
Ophelia felt guilty, like a thief caught red-handed, and immediately lowered her head.
Meanwhile, she thought, 'True. I'm a thief. I stole Finnegan's sperm, and now I have his baby in my belly.'
The thought that Finnegan was her baby's father gave Ophelia a strange feeling. Her heart somehow softened.
Meanwhile, Finnegan saw her reaction. This wasn't the first time he had seen guilt written all over her.
He wondered, 'What's wrong with her? Why is she so afraid of me?'
