Chapter 52 His is More Expensive
Caspian exploded on the spot.
"Ah!" Caspian screamed in surprise, "Finnegan, did Miss Sinclair buy the clothes you're wearing? Holy moly, this is big news! You claimed you had no feelings for Miss Sinclair, but now you've confessed."
Finnegan frowned, "Believe it or not, I can have you thrown out."
"Finnegan," Caspian, thick-skinned as ever, leaned in, "How much did this outfit cost? Why would Miss Sinclair buy you clothes? Are you two having a secret affair? Boss and secretary, it must be so. Today, I went to Miss Sinclair's house. She lives alone, and she's single, so there's no fiancé. Finnegan, you're lying. Are you afraid I'll pursue Miss Sinclair?"
"Enough." Finnegan refused to answer.
Caspian was chattering non-stop, giving Finnegan a headache.
"Finnegan, just confess already," Caspian gossiped, "I promise I won't spread the word. If our friends knew, they'd be green with envy."
He was the first to know that Finnegan was in a relationship. This was enough for him to brag about for a lifetime.
Given Caspian's nature, if he didn't get an answer, he'd keep nagging and meddling.
After a moment's consideration, Finnegan said, "Miss Sinclair...is indeed quite good."
"Yes!" Caspian jumped up excitedly, "Finnegan, I knew you liked Miss Sinclair. Today, I helped you test Miss Sinclair. I guess she's also interested in you, but because of your lady from Orchid Garden, she's too embarrassed to admit it."
"Seraphina is still useful," Finnegan's voice became slightly deeper, "Don't bother her and stay away from Miss Sinclair."
Caspian smiled, "Finnegan, I won't interfere with the women you're interested in. I was just joking with you this morning. I knew you’d be too stubborn to admit it."
Finnegan shot him a look.
Caspian got the hint, "I'm leaving, I'm leaving."
As long as he knew that Finnegan was genuinely interested in Ophelia, Caspian's goal was achieved. He was off to brag.
Caspian was indeed the type who couldn't keep a secret. As soon as he left the company, he started calling his friends, "Breaking news, Finnegan is in a relationship. It's not the one from Orchid Garden; the current one is his main squeeze. Want to know who it is? I'm not telling you. You guys are going to be so anxious. I'm not bullshitting; Finnegan admitted it himself..."
After Caspian left, Finnegan stared at the office phone, wanting to call Ophelia. But considering that Ophelia was on vacation, it wouldn't be appropriate to call her back without reason, so he dismissed the idea.
Finnegan held back for two days; he didn’t contact Ophelia at all.
Meanwhile, Ophelia, on her vacation, didn't receive any news from the company, which she found unusual.
She asked Linda privately to make sure that there really was no need for her to clock in.
Linda assured her to enjoy her vacation.
Two days later.
That day, Ophelia went to the company early in the morning. She was going to have a baby in the future, so she needed to work hard and couldn't afford to be unemployed. If her absence had no impact on the company and work could proceed as usual, then this was a crisis. It meant that she could be replaced by the company at any time; she was dispensable.
Of course, Ophelia didn't know that during the two days she was absent, it was Finnegan who ordered the secretarial department not to disturb her with work matters.
The colleagues in the secretarial department not only had to do their own work but also had to take care of Ophelia’s tasks.
Ophelia went to Finnegan’s office as usual to arrange the bookshelf and make coffee. All these tasks fell on her.
At 8:50, Finnegan came in through the door.
After seeing Ophelia in the office, a wave of joy surged from the bottom of his heart. This joy was simply because she had returned.
"Mr. Abbott, your coffee," Ophelia respectfully placed the coffee on the table.
Finnegan composed himself and asked without any change in his demeanor, "Miss Sinclair, why did you buy clothes for Caspian?" This question had been bothering him for two days.
Ophelia was taken aback, then honestly replied, "I dirtied Mr. Hawthorne's clothes, so I compensated him."
This reason made Finnegan feel a bit better.
"How much were his clothes?"
"69 dollars." Ophelia was a bit embarrassed, "Mr. Hawthorne said he liked it. I suggested he choose from another store, but he didn't want to. I think 69 dollars is too cheap, it feels a bit... inappropriate..."
"Very fitting for his character." Finnegan sipped his coffee, casually saying, "He deserves to wear clothes worth 69 dollars."
Caspian's 69 dollars, compared to the 150 dollars Ophelia spent on him, was more than twice as much. As long as his clothes were more expensive than Caspian's, Finnegan was happy.
