Chapter 79 Seraphina Was Missing

The bed had split right down the middle. It was a secondhand piece from the landlord that could bear the weight of one person, but two put it under 'pressure'.

After assessing the break, Finnegan remarked, "Looks like it's replacement time. I'll have someone deliver a new bed tomorrow. For tonight, we'll have to make do. Or, you could come back to Orchid Garden with me."

"Hold on." Ophelia sorted through the situation at hand. "Mr. Abbott, this is my place. You and I, there’s nothing between us. There's no need for you to send a bed, nor will I be going to Orchid Garden with you, let alone become your girlfriend."

She wanted to set things straight.

Blunt as her words were, Ophelia expected Finnegan to react, but instead, he simply fixated on the broken bed as if she hadn't spoken, insisting, "I'm getting a bed sent over now."

Ophelia was on the verge of exploding, unable to fathom why Finnegan seemed not to understand plain English.

Yet, she dared not voice that thought.

"Mr. Abbott, as the president of the multibillion-dollar Abbott Corporation with net worth to match, you wouldn't just squat at my place against protocol, right?" she said.

A billionaire president chasing after a woman?

Lingering at a girl's place in the dead of night and refusing to leave?

If word got out, the whole circle of corporate presidents would be rocked by scandal.

To Ophelia, a big-shot president like Finnegan should be like those portrayed on TV – arrogant as all get-out, coldly indifferent to any woman that threw herself at him, only mingling with social equals.

Now, here was Finnegan, behaving like a common loafer, utterly mismatched with his usual persona.

Where was the man she had sized up?

What happened to his image?

Finnegan stood up, his eyes mysterious like fathomless deep waters. "Ophelia," he said, "I'm also just an ordinary man with emotions and desires."

Ophelia clung to a shred of sanity. "We really aren't a good match, and I haven't been playing hard to get. As for earlier, any man would have reacted physically. It's normal biology, Mr. Abbott. Just like you said, I'm only human. It doesn't mean anything."

Finnegan watched Ophelia for a moment, his brows arching slightly. "Do you have someone you're fond of? Is it that jerk who abandoned you?"

That jerk?

Ophelia didn't even catch on at first - she had no man in her life.

Then it hit her.

Finnegan was referring to the man responsible for her ‘pregnancy’.

She wouldn't dare admit that that man was Finnegan himself.

Before Ophelia could respond, Finnegan dropped a bombshell. "I'll have a bed delivered here tomorrow. Get some rest," and with that, he was gone.

His arrival was unheralded, his departure abrupt.

Ophelia was dumbfounded. What was Finnegan trying to imply?

If not for the broken bed slat as evidence of Finnegan's visit, Ophelia would have thought she had dreamed the whole thing.

Ophelia sat on the couch, still warm from where Finnegan had been, his words reverberating in her ears. The idea that Finnegan had just confessed to her was something she never even dared dream of. If word got out, countless women would turn green with envy.

If it weren’t for Seraphina... Ophelia might have said yes on the spot.

The allure of the billionaire president Finnegan—who could resist it?

Even if it were just a fling, Ophelia knew she wouldn’t be losing out. She wasn’t some kind of spinster sworn to a man-free life. If she were to choose a man, picking one who was stronger in certain aspects was definitely better than one who’d flop in a matter of minutes.

With his looks and wealth, not to mention his prowess in bed, women were willing to throw money at Finnegan for a chance to be with him.

However, there was always Seraphina standing in the way.

Thinking of Seraphina, Ophelia made a call to Magnus. “Magnus, have you heard from Seraphina recently?”

Magnus, busy organizing trial papers, answered with confusion. “No, Ophelia, what’s up? Can’t you get Seraphina off your mind? You want to reconcile with her?”

“I heard she moved out of Orchid Garden, that she and Finnegan split months ago. I never caught wind of it. She hasn’t reached out to you either, so where could she be?” Ophelia was worried. “What if she did something rash?”

The more Ophelia thought about it, the more she felt it could be true.

Seraphina might have a soft demeanor, but when she got fixated on something, it was like trying to stop a stampede. It wasn’t impossible that she might do something drastic, even something like jumping into a river.

“Don’t panic just yet. I’ll try reaching out to her. It’s probably nothing,” Magnus said, now also concerned. After hanging up with Ophelia, he tried calling Seraphina.

Her phone was off. Magnus sent a message only to realize he’d been blocked by Seraphina as well.

Seraphina was completely out of reach.
