Chapter 398 A Lifetime of Regret
Old Abbott's words made Finnegan frown. "Did you just say that Dovie is not doing well? What's going on? What happened?"
Ophelia, who was listening to the conversation nearby, suddenly felt a tightness in her chest, and her expression became serious.
Old Abbott said on the phone, "Dovie doesn't know what's going on either. She has been to the hospital twice, and this time the rumors say she might not make it. Jude and Celia went to the hospital to see her, and they haven't come back yet."
"Okay, I'll hang up now. I'll call Celia to ask about it." Finnegan felt a bit anxious. He needed to know Dovie's condition.
If Dovie was indeed Ophelia's biological mother, and Ophelia was in France, she might not make it back in time to see her one last time.
Seeing Finnegan so anxious, Ophelia didn't think much of it. After all, the two families had a good relationship, and Dovie had always appreciated Finnegan, who had always respected Dovie.
After hanging up the phone, Finnegan quickly called Celia.
At the hospital, Celia and Jude were still outside the intensive care unit. The doctor had just pulled Dovie back from the brink of death, but she had fallen into a deep coma, and it was uncertain when she would wake up.
The two were discussing the condition with the doctor when Celia saw an incoming call. She hadn't saved Ophelia's number, and seeing it was an unknown number, she was too worried about Dovie's condition to answer.
Finnegan frowned and called Jude.
Jude had saved Ophelia's number, and seeing it was Ophelia calling, he answered immediately.
"Ophelia?"
"Dad, it's me." Finnegan asked, "Are you at the hospital now? How is Dovie?"
"Yes, your mom and I are both at the hospital. Are you okay? Are you out?" Jude was very excited. "Dovie was just resuscitated, but she hasn't woken up yet. She's in the intensive care unit."
Hearing that she had been resuscitated, Finnegan breathed a sigh of relief. Fortunately, there was still time.
If his guess was correct, at least there was still time to confirm it.
"I was bailed out." Finnegan asked, "I just called Mom. Why didn't she answer?"
"You called her?" Jude glanced at Celia beside him and asked, "Finnegan called you? Why didn't you answer?"
"Finnegan is out? He didn't call me." Celia realized. "There was an unknown number just now. I was so worried about Dovie's condition that I didn't answer."
Jude said, "That was Ophelia's number. You didn't save Ophelia's number? Finnegan called from Ophelia's number."
Celia felt very embarrassed and said, "I'll save it now."
Their conversation fell into Finnegan's ears on the other end of the phone.
Finnegan said, "Keep an eye on Dovie's condition. If anything happens, call us immediately."
"No problem, I will. I'm staying at the hospital." Jude asked, "When are you coming back? Is Ophelia okay? She's pregnant. Make sure she doesn't overexert herself."
"We're fine. We'll be back soon." Finnegan only explained a little over the phone. After giving some instructions, he hung up.
Ophelia asked, "Is Dovie critically ill? Did they say why?"
"They didn't say." Finnegan's lips tightened. "Ophelia, why don't you go back first? You and Tate go back, and you visit Dovie in the hospital."
"What about you? Aren't you coming back with me?" Ophelia thought he was trying to send her away. She said, "I want to go back with you."
"Ophelia, listen to me. You go back first. If Dovie is really going to pass away, at least you can be there to see her one last time." Finnegan was naturally considering the worst-case scenario.
"Dovie has been very good to me. She is sick, and I should visit her. But your situation here is not resolved yet. You are only out on bail. If they change their minds, I worry about you." Ophelia shook her head. "I can't be at ease unless you come back with me."
Finnegan held Ophelia's shoulders with both hands and hesitated before saying, "Ophelia, Dovie might be your biological mother. If she really passes away and you don't make it back in time, it will be a lifetime of regret."
