Chapter 95 Turmoil of the Heart
Finding someone was not a challenge for Finnegan.
Twenty minutes later, information about Seraphina's current residence appeared on Finnegan's phone.
He had waited downstairs for the same twenty minutes while Ophelia stood behind her balcony curtains, watching.
Finnegan's persistent presence disrupted her tranquil life and stirred the dormant emotions in her heart.
After Finnegan's car pulled away, Ophelia withdrew her gaze, let the curtain fall, and turned to look at the small Christmas tree on her table, feeling a mix of emotions.
She was just an ordinary girl, how could she remain calm under such an intense courtship?
The pure gold Christmas tree was adorned with several little diamonds, dazzlingly bright.
It was like a powerful CEO pursuing Cinderella, but could a Cinderella stand a chance?
Ophelia packed away the Christmas tree and the earrings Dovie had given her. In her modest rental, these two gifts made her feel uneasy, as if they could attract thieves.
The next day.
Ophelia packaged the Christmas tree and, on her way to work, she dropped it off at Abbott’s Corporation.
She was planning to leave it with the receptionist but bumped into Linda coming in. Handing over something so valuable to Linda for delivery seemed more reassuring.
"Linda," Ophelia called out, stopping Linda who was hurrying to catch the elevator.
Linda turned around, surprised to see Ophelia: "Ophelia, what are you doing here? Didn't you go to Parks Corporation?"
"I came to return something," Ophelia said. "Linda, could you please pass this to Mr. Abbott for me?"
Linda's eyes lit up as she noticed the package in Ophelia's hand, looking incredulously from Ophelia to the gift: "What's this?"
She asked deliberately, just to confirm.
She had personally picked out the gifts, and she had a hand in the wrapping, so she knew perfectly well what was in the box.
Ophelia handed the package to Linda, half-truthfully saying, "It's a little tree. I'm in a bit of a hurry to get to Parks Corporation, thanks."
Without waiting for a response, Ophelia quickly slipped away.
Linda stood still, stunned for a few seconds, then checked the contents of the box to confirm it was indeed the gold Christmas tree. She was even more surprised.
Was this Mr. Abbott courting his girlfriend, and that girlfriend was Ophelia?
Oh my.
Realizing she'd stumbled upon a huge secret, Linda hurried upstairs, ablaze with curiosity.
With Finnegan not around, Linda left some items in the office and then went to find Atticus. "Mr. Montgomery, is Mr. Abbott chasing after Ophelia?"
Atticus was taken aback and blurted out, "How did you know?"
"I knew it," Linda said. "I just ran into Ophelia. She returned the gift that Mr. Abbott had sent her."
Atticus asked, "Did you take it?"
"Yeah, Ophelia handed it to me and left before I could stop her."
"You're in trouble now," Atticus said. "You've just taken back the gift that Mr. Abbott sent out."
Linda realized the predicament and said anxiously, "What should I do? I'm going to take it back right now, while Mr. Abbott's away, and send it to Ophelia."
"You better hurry then," Atticus reminded her.
Linda took a few steps away but then circled back. "Mr. Montgomery's out, and Ophelia sending the gift back means what, that Mr. Abbott's advances failed? Mr. Abbott personally making a move and there's still a woman he can't win over? He likes Ophelia, so why did he fire her? No wonder Ophelia acted around Mr. Abbott like a mouse around a cat. Has Mr. Abbott had his eye on Ophelia for a while?"
Linda's head was swirling with questions.
Atticus said with a smile, "The less you dig into Mr. Abbott's personal business, especially his pursuit of Ophelia, the better. Still, it wouldn't hurt to be nicer to Ophelia in the future."
"I've noticed," Linda said. "The last time Mr. Abbott was in good spirits, he gave our secretaries a bonus for the first time ever. I’ll go get the gift, or I’ll be in hot water when Mr. Abbott comes back."
Linda hurried off towards the president's office, but ultimately, she was still a step behind.
