Chapter 487 Danger Approaches
Wilder's words also indicated that he remembered everything, knowing that Ophelia was his daughter.
Finnegan asked, "Mr. Jennings, why haven't you returned to New York in so many years?"
Wilder looked up, gazing at Finnegan, and began to recount a story from over twenty years ago. "Back then, I traveled to New York and met Dovie. She was beautiful and intelligent, and I fell in love at first sight. Later, we had a child, who is now Ophelia. Shortly after Ophelia was born, she was lost. While searching for Ophelia, I got into an accident that caused severe brain damage and memory loss. I forgot about Dovie until just now when I saw the pocket watch."
Wilder's expression was pained. Remembering everything at a time when it was too late was the cruelest.
Finnegan was not surprised. Wilder's explanation matched his speculations almost perfectly.
"You are now afraid to see Ophelia." Finnegan understood Wilder's meaning, "Ophelia's mother never remarried and has been searching for Ophelia all these years. The only consolation is that she reunited with Ophelia in her lifetime. I believe Ophelia's mother passed away without knowing you were still alive."
Not knowing eliminates expectations.
"But I didn't even get to see her one last time." Wilder couldn't be more regretful. "If she can't see me in heaven, she will be scared. This is God's arrangement, making me forget about her."
Finnegan didn't know how to comfort Wilder as he wasn't the type to console others with delicate thoughts. All he could do was accompany Wilder and listen to his past.
Wilder poured a glass of wine for Finnegan, who didn't say much and just drank along.
Meanwhile, in the hotel room, Ophelia, seeing Finnegan not returning downstairs promptly, decided to go down as well.
Ophelia saw the two men drinking in the hotel lobby. She approached and sat down on the sofa behind Wilder without disturbing them.
At first, Ophelia didn't know what the two were talking about until she heard Wilder, with a choked voice, say, "I want to go to Dovie's grave to apologize and repent. I forgot about her, making her wait in agony for over twenty years."
Upon hearing this, Ophelia was shocked. She turned around and locked eyes with Finnegan.
Finnegan had noticed Ophelia coming downstairs earlier.
The two locked eyes, and Finnegan winked at Ophelia, indicating that Wilder was her biological father.
Unaware of Ophelia sitting behind him, Wilder continued to drink one glass after another, getting himself heavily intoxicated.
Alcohol could numb one's thoughts, temporarily helping to forget the pain.
When Wilder finally passed out from drinking, Ophelia stood up and sat next to Finnegan, gazing at the heavily intoxicated Wilder in front of her, her biological father. Ophelia felt a mix of emotions.
He truly forgot that Dovie had also passed away.
People often say goodbye, expecting to meet again, but unknowingly, they may have already seen many people for the last time, bidding farewell without realizing it.
Ophelia had Wilder's attendants help him back to the hotel room. Perhaps Wilder wished to remain in slumber for the rest of his life.
Forgetting is cruel, and remembering is another form of cruelty.
The next day, during the royal wedding, although Wilder, as a prince, was absent, Katherine and Vera searched everywhere, even coming to the hotel to find Ophelia, but no one saw Wilder.
Ophelia could probably guess where Wilder had gone, but she kept silent.
With Wilder missing the wedding, Ophelia and Finnegan naturally found an excuse to leave early.
Katherine wanted to persuade Ophelia to stay, but Ophelia insisted on leaving.
Initially thinking Katherine was kind, upon learning that Katherine was the culprit behind separating Wilder and Dovie, causing their tragic separation and eventual deaths, Ophelia's feelings toward Katherine soured.
If Katherine hadn't taken Wilder away due to her selfish desires all those years ago, Wilder and Dovie wouldn't have been separated for over twenty years.
Mina had hoped to see Finnegan at the wedding. When she learned from Katherine that they had left early, she felt regretful.
Meanwhile, in New York, it was afternoon. Celia took Warmie out again, enjoying afternoon tea with her close friends.
Their gathering spot was always the same upscale club, where they would draw and chat together.
Celia brought two nannies along, and as her car left the Abbott family estate, a black car followed closely behind at the intersection.
The driver of the car was Jesse.
