Chapter 9 Her So-Called Bestie

Finnegan shook his head, got up, and took a cold shower in the bathroom. Finally, he managed to quench the lust inside of him.

Meanwhile, Seraphina, who had been kicked out, felt both aggrieved and uneasy. Not knowing why she had upset Finnegan, she cautiously tried to gauge his thoughts.

She ran into Lina in the hallway and approached Lina eagerly. "Lina, I can't sleep. Could you keep me company and talk for a bit?"

It was late, and Lina was tired and wanted to rest. Yet thinking that Seraphina was Finnegan's girlfriend, she had to concentrate. She said with a smile, "Of course, Ms. Kingsley."

Hearing that, Seraphina began to inquire, "Lina, may I ask you something? Mr. Abbott doesn't like lilies, right?"

Lina nodded. "He hates lilies the most. They're forbidden here. In fact, he can't stand the smell, and we're not even allowed to mention the word."

Only then did Seraphina realize how big the mistake she had made. She asked, flustered, "Why?"

"I don't know." Lina shook her head. "He just doesn't like them."

Upon knowing that, Seraphina hurried back to her room, threw away all the lily-scented body wash and perfumes, and took another shower.

Frustrated, she thought, 'I've just had a chance to be rich. Finnegan won't hate me because of what I did tonight, will he?'

She had just enjoyed living in a detached luxurious villa for a day, and the title of Mrs. Abbott as well as the lavish life of the rich were waving at her. She couldn't let all that slip away!

She had made up her mind. She would and must make Finnegan fall in love with her!

Just then, her phone rang.

It was Ophelia.

After Ophelia went back to their rental apartment, she didn't see Seraphina, so she called.

After hesitating for a few seconds, Seraphina picked up the phone. "Ophelia."

Ophelia said with concern, "Seraphina, where are you? It's so late, and you're not in the apartment..."

Before she could finish speaking, Seraphina interrupted her, "I've moved to my boyfriend's place. I won't be coming back."

Ophelia was silent for a few seconds. Then she said, "So soon? But your stuff is still here."

"I don't want them anymore. You can have them if you find them useful. Or you may just toss them away," Seraphina said, her tone suggesting that she wanted to draw a line between them. "It's late. I'm going to sleep. Bye."

She hung up the phone.

Sitting alone in the rental apartment, Ophelia was somewhat at a loss while looking at the disconnected phone and the empty apartment.

She thought, 'I can tell Seraphina doesn't wanna talk to me. But we're besties. How come she's like a completely different person in just two days?'

'Is she worried that I'm gonna stop her from pursuing her happiness?'

'She's usually frugal and penny-pinching, and she even keeps all the cardboard boxes from deliveries to sell for money. But she moved with nothing but some everyday clothes.'

'That's so weird. I'm curious. Who is her boyfriend? How come he gets her to change so drastically so soon?'

'Has she been tricked into doing something illegal?'

'If so, her whole life will be ruined!'

'No way. I've got to go talk to her tomorrow. I can't sit around while doing nothing.'

Early the next morning, as soon as the alarm rang, Ophelia got up and prepared for the day. As Finnegan's secretary, she had to reach the company before eight o'clock.

She hurried out and ran into a chatty neighbor who stopped her, saying, "Ophelia, you're still living here? Even that unattractive Seraphina who used to be your roommate has found a CEO boyfriend. He drives a limo worth hundreds of thousands of dollars and has a personal assistant. I thought you and her were besties. Shouldn't she help you out?"

Ophelia was surprised. "How did you know about that?"

"I saw her moving out yesterday," the neighbor said disdainfully. "She is so vain. She showed off to me, you know, with all that bodyguards and assistant stuff. She said she was moving in with her rich boyfriend. Yeah, she has a CEO boyfriend. So what? What's the big deal? Does she really think that makes her something?"

Stunned, Ophelia thought, 'Seraphina is really with someone rich?'

She asked, "Did you get to see the car's license plate?"

She decided to find out whether Seraphina's boyfriend was indeed rich or a fraud. If he was the former and treated Seraphina well, then she had nothing to worry about.

Unbeknownst to Seraphina, Ophelia began to look into Finnegan's license plate.
