Chapter 484 The Vanishing of Life and Death
When Wilder admitted it, Finnegan's expression changed slightly. As he had guessed, that pocket watch was indeed related to Wilder.
But from what Wilder said, Wilder himself didn't know why that pocket watch ended up in Ophelia's hands.
Finnegan found this matter highly suspicious. Wilder didn't seem to be lying, so if there was something deliberately being concealed, there was no need to admit that the pocket watch belonged to him.
Finnegan composed himself and said, "It's quite a coincidence indeed. That pocket watch was a keepsake of Ophelia's mother, said to be a token of love from Ophelia's father to her mother."
"Ophelia's father?" Wilder was also very interested. "I heard Lance say before that Ophelia's father was also named Wilder. It's quite a deep connection. My pocket watch has been missing for over twenty years. It should be the one I lost in New York back then."
Finnegan couldn't believe it was lost. There weren't so many coincidences in the world.
Finnegan deliberately said, "Ophelia's mother's name is Dovie. Over twenty years ago, she fell in love at first sight with Ophelia's father. According to my mother, Ophelia's father was from France."
The names, nationalities, the pocket watch, the timeline, everything matched up.
Wilder also realized the implications behind Finnegan's words.
There weren't that many coincidences in the world. When he went to New York years ago, something happened. His head was seriously injured, he lost some of his memories, and over twenty years had passed without him trying to recover those forgotten memories.
Now, with Finnegan's words, Wilder felt a slight shock. 'Had something happen to me in New York?' he thought.
Wilder's face had undergone plastic surgery after the incident because of extensive injuries, which had been repaired.
"You mentioned earlier that Ophelia's mother's name is Dovie. I heard from Lance that she passed away a few months ago?" Wilder, for some reason, felt unexpectedly sad when he mentioned Dovie's name.
"Yes, her name was Dovie, and she passed away a few months ago." Finnegan kept a close eye on Wilder's reaction and continued, "Mr. Jennings, we are all intelligent people here. It would help if you understood my meaning. It wasn't convenient to ask in the restaurant earlier, and now there are no outsiders here. Why did the pocket watch, originally yours, become a token of love between Ophelia's parents? Lance is your son, yet he looks almost identical to Ophelia's father when he was young. Mr. Jennings, are you unwilling to admit it, or do you truly not remember?"
Wilder was at a loss for words, unsure how to respond to Finnegan.
Setting down the bowling ball, Wilder gazed in Ophelia's direction and said to Finnegan, "I have some matters to attend to. I'll head back first. There's a royal wedding tomorrow. Someone will come to take you all there. You and Ophelia should rest early."
He needed to confirm something.
Finnegan didn't press further, simply acknowledging with a casual tone.
The two changed out of their sports attire and took a shower.
The four of them walked out of the bowling alley. When they reached the entrance, Wilder claimed that he had left his phone inside the alley, purposely distracting Katherine, then turned to Ophelia and said, "Ophelia, could you lend me the pocket watch you have for a few days?"
This request was abrupt, especially considering it was a keepsake of Dovie's. Ophelia hesitated but then heard Finnegan say, "Ophe, lend it to Mr. Jennings for a few days."
Glancing at Finnegan, Ophelia, unsure of the situation, still handed the pocket watch to Wilder. "Mr. Jennings, this is my mother's keepsake. Please take good care of it."
"Of course." Wilder saw Katherine coming out and quickly put the pocket watch in his pocket. Then he smiled and said, "We'll head off now."
Katherine was unaware of what had transpired and also smiled, saying, "Take care."
Ophelia and Finnegan stood in place, watching as the others left. After they were gone, Ophelia asked, "Why did you ask me to lend the pocket watch to Mr. Jennings just now?"
Finnegan replied, "That pocket watch belongs to Mr. Jennings."
"It belongs to Mr. Jennings?" Ophelia was surprised. "But that was the token of love my dad gave to my mom. Could it be that Mr. Jennings really..."
The rest of her words remained unspoken, but both of them understood without saying it aloud.
Finnegan nodded. "It's very likely. But why has Mr. Jennings changed so much, and why hasn't he returned to New York all these years? What happened when your father fell into the river and disappeared remains unknown."
Ophelia's emotions were complex. "Physical changes could be due to plastic surgery, but if Mr. Jennings is really my dad, why hasn't he returned? Why did he marry Katherine? Could he truly have forgotten? My mom never remarried. She couldn't let go of my dad. She passed away without knowing he was still alive, without knowing he had remarried and had children. It's truly unfair and cruel to her."
