Chapter 268 Awakening Maternal Love
Ophe's gaze locked onto Seraphina, but Seraphina didn't notice Ophe. Seraphina hailed a taxi and left. Ophe was curious as to why Seraphina wasn't at the electronics factory at this time. How did she end up here?
The consumption level at the coffee shop across the street could have been higher. "Ophe, what would you like to drink?" Old Abbott looked at the coffee menu and had already ordered a cup of caramel latte for herself. The old lady loved Japanese food, skewers, and barbecue, and also enjoyed a latte. After finishing the promotional video, Old Abbott took Ophe out for a stroll, and she couldn't resist when she saw the coffee shop.
Ophe shifted her gaze and said to the coffee shop staff, "Then, I'll have a glass of watermelon juice." The staff quickly prepared the latte, and Old Abbott took a sip and felt particularly satisfied. "This is the taste, and it's so delicious. Your mother-in-law is strict and doesn't let me drink. Ophe, next time, you can bring me out to drink secretly."
"Granny, you can't drink often. It's not good for your health," Ophe replied. "Let's go inside the mall and have a look around." Ophe spent the day with Old Abbott, and that’s when they heard the news that Finnegan had sent someone to Tobias' old house. They had also gathered evidence about Tobias selling his children. Now, they were waiting for Riley's awakening.
As Ophe expected, Magnus couldn't resist and went to find Riley. He wore a mask and didn't dare to return home openly, so he hid near the entrance of the residential area. When Riley went to pick up Serenity from school, Magnus appeared in front of Riley.
"Mom." Riley was startled by Magnus' voice. Magnus took off his mask. "It's me, Magnus."
"Magnus." Riley was shocked. "Why didn't you come home?"
After speaking, Riley realized that Magnus was now homeless and couldn't come back. Afraid of being recognized, Magnus quickly put on his mask again. "Mom, let's talk somewhere else."
Now, Magnus only trusted Riley among the people at home. More accurately, he felt sympathy for Riley. Riley was the one standing behind him, not like Tobias and Jett who would only say hurtful things.
Riley followed Magnus to a tree in the shade of the green path. She said, "Magnus, I'm sorry for what you've been through."
"Mom, do you believe that I'm innocent?" Magnus asked. "You know I'm innocent, right?"
Riley didn't say anything. She kept her head down, which was an implicit confirmation. She knew it better than anyone.
Her silence pained Magnus. When he looked at the aged Riley in front of him, Magnus smiled bitterly and said, "Riley, I want to know why you didn't stop Tobias when he sold me. If you didn't want me, why bring me into this world? Why did you stay silent when they slandered me?" He truly couldn't understand how there could be parents in this world who didn't love their children.
Riley's eyes welled up with tears. She cried but didn't say a word.
"Riley," Magnus felt heartbroken. "Say something. Do you know how people are cursing me online? Have I treated you all badly? Why do you treat me like this? We are all your children. Why does my brother receive your love and not me?"
"Magnus," Riley sobbed, her aged hands trembling as she gently waved them. "Stop talking." Riley couldn't face Magnus directly. As a mother, she felt deeply ashamed.
Magnus's eyes also became moist when he saw Riley crying. Magnus had been holding onto this pent-up grievance for several days, but Riley had been carrying it for decades. She had grown accustomed to silence. Tobias had not only enslaved her body but also her mind.
"Mom." Magnus held Riley's shoulders with both hands. "You don't belong there. You and Tobias don't truly love each other. You were forced. Why won't you choose yourself for once? I'm here for you, don't be afraid."
These words greatly encouraged Riley. Over the years, Jett had been just as bad as Tobias. Even when Tobias hit her, Jett would look on with indifference. Riley had endured countless beatings over the decades, and Tobias had worn her down. Today, finally, she had a son who could support her.
Riley's lips trembled, filled with both excitement and joy. "Magnus, I'm sorry," Riley looked at Magnus with teary eyes. "I'm so sorry. Your friend said you went to sell blood, that you collapsed from overworking your part-time job, my child. Why are you so foolish?"
