Chapter 740 The Last Step is Up to You

Karen was fuming but kept quiet. In this family, her words didn't matter much anymore. Eugene, Barbara, and Raymond all backed Tate, so she had to swallow her pride.

Tate left, leaving Karen seething.

Karen stomped her foot in frustration, feeling utterly powerless.

After being warned, Karen behaved, returning to the banquet quietly and not daring to speak out of turn.

Barbara found a moment to pull Karen aside. "Karen, honey, watch your mouth, okay? It's Tate's first time meeting everybody, let's not start any drama."

"Mom, I was just repeating what the servants said," Karen deflected. "What exactly did Tate do before?"

"Didn't your dad already fill you in? She got adopted by another family," Barbara said. "Why don't you believe him?"

Karen muttered, "You're acting like I'm a kid again. Now that Tate's back, you don't care about me anymore."

"You're also my daughter; how could I not love you?" Barbara said. "It's just that Tate just came back, so we might have gotten a little caught up. Karen, honey, there's no need to compete with Tate. You're sisters. When your dad and I are gone, it's you three - you, Tate, and Raymond - who need to look out for each other."

"I know, Mom. I just wanted to see if I'm still your little princess," Karen whined. "Is Dad really going to let Tate take over the company?"

"Yes, that's the plan. After the banquet, he'll arrange for Tate to join the company. Raymond doesn't care about it, and you're unreliable, so we can only let Tate handle it."

Hearing this, Karen regretted wasting the past years just having fun, making her parents doubt her abilities.

Just as Karen was about to say something, Barbara said, "I'll go check on Tate. Don't drink too much."

Barbara returned to the banquet, leaving Karen standing there, staring blankly.

Finnegan didn't stay at the banquet long. After eating, he left with Lily.

Taking advantage of the outing, Finnegan drove Lily to the reservoir for a walk.

The reservoir was cool, with a large lawn where many people were camping.

Lily asked, "Why are we here?"

"Just to take a walk," Finnegan said, hands in his pockets, strolling ahead. "Ophelia, how far two people can go depends on whether both are willing to communicate and move closer to each other."

Finnegan walked a dozen steps ahead, then stopped and turned around, looking at Lily, who was a meter away. "I can take ninety-nine steps. Are you willing to take the last one?"

Lily stood still, the wind from the lawn brushing her face and lifting her hair. She looked at Finnegan, who was gazing at her with deep affection, and felt a faint pain in her heart.

That was Ophelia's heart aching.

Ophelia's heart ached for Finnegan.

At that moment, Lily wished she were Ophelia, so she could soothe the sadness in Finnegan's heart and the pain in his eyes.

Lily stood still, torn with indecision.

Finnegan smirked self-deprecatingly, "You still won't take that step, will you? Ophelia, are you worried about your health? Is that why?"

Lily was speechless. Finnegan had even found an excuse for her.

Lily's hand in her pocket clenched tightly. "Finnegan, you're too good. How can I face someone as good as you?"

Lily lowered her head, her eyes moistening as she looked down.

"As long as you don't leave this family, nothing else matters," Finnegan said with a bitter smile, turning to walk away.

He would always give Ophelia his unique affection.

Lily stood still, and only after Finnegan walked far away did she muster the courage to take that step. Lily whispered to her chest, "Ophelia, I took this step for you."

The wind blew, scattering Lily's words, carrying them away to an unknown destination.

Gavin called, "Lily, Dad's not feeling well. Could you maybe find some time to come back and see him?"

Hearing that Dylan wasn't well, Lily became anxious. "Is it his chronic illness acting up again? Tell him not to go out to sea. I'll come back tomorrow."

Gavin asked, "How are things on your end?"

"He won't agree to the divorce."
After boss's baby, she Escape
