Chapter 389: Evidence of Innocence
These people were in it for the money and had no sense of morality.
When they heard Ophelia offering such a high price, they were naturally tempted.
The curly-haired man asked, "Really? Can you come up with $90,000?"
"No problem," Ophelia replied. "I don't know any of you. You want money, and I can give you money. Who would refuse more money, right?"
The curly-haired man discussed with the others, and finally, he said, "We want $100,000. If you can give us $100,000, we'll let you go."
They raised the price.
Ophelia pretended to be troubled and hesitant. If she agreed too quickly, they might go back on their word.
It was like haggling when buying something back home. Agreeing too quickly would make the seller think they could have asked for more.
"Can't come up with it?" the curly-haired man said. "No ransom and you won't walk out of here."
"Alright," Ophelia said. "You have a deal, but I need to know who hired you."
The curly-haired man was straightforward. "Once we see the money, we'll tell you who wants you dead. We want cash."
"No problem, but you need to give me time to get the cash ready."
These people really only cared about money.
It was Ophelia's first time in France. She couldn't think of anyone else who would want to harm her apart from Morgan.
Twenty minutes later, Atticus arrived with the money, one hundred thousand dollars in cash. He had prepared this money for Finnegan's bail, but now it was being used for a different purpose.
The curly-haired man and his group kept their word. After taking the money, they told Ophelia, "It's an American man from a fast-food restaurant on Wall Street. He gave us $30,000 to kill you. That's all we know."
Ophelia was very puzzled. 'How could I have offended a man from a fast-food restaurant?'
Among the people she knew, there was no man with the surname Langston.
Ophelia asked, "Did you tamper with my car?"
The men looked at each other, and the curly-haired man said, "We didn't touch your car."
Ophelia found this strange. 'Could another group of people have tampered with the car? Who have I offended that so many people wanted me dead?'
Ophelia asked Atticus to have the car checked and then returned to the hotel. She also sent Tate out to handle something.
The car inspection results came out the next day.
Sure enough, the car's brake pads had been deliberately damaged.
The parking lot had no surveillance, unlike the strict management back home.
Atticus said, "Ophelia, maybe you should go back home first. It's too dangerous here."
Before he finished speaking, someone knocked on the door.
Atticus went to open the door, and it was one of Morgan's subordinates. "Ophelia, Morgan sent us to take you to the police station."
Ophelia wasn't foolish. If she went with them, the destination would definitely not be the police station to pick up Finnegan. She knew it was a trap.
There were many people at the underground casino yesterday, so Morgan couldn't hurt her. But if she went today, the consequences would be unimaginable.
Ophelia said coldly, "Go tell Morgan that we'll meet at the police station later. There's no need to come and pick me up."
The man was a bit troubled. "Ophelia, the car is already downstairs. It's better if we take you. If Morgan knows we neglected you, we won't be able to explain ourselves to him."
"Whether you can explain yourselves or not is your problem. Go tell Morgan that we'll meet at the police station in half an hour."
Ophelia's attitude was firm, and Morgan's subordinates had to go back and report.
Once they left, Atticus said, "Ophelia, you can't go."
" I have to go. If I don't go to the police station, how can I bring Finnegan back?" Ophelia had just finished speaking when Tate returned.
Ophelia asked urgently, "Did you get what I asked for?"
Tate took out a USB drive. "It's all in here."
"Great, Tate, thank you," Ophelia said, very pleased.
Atticus was puzzled. "Ophelia, what are you talking about? What's on the USB drive?"
"It's evidence of Finnegan's innocence," Ophelia said. "Last night, I had Tate visit Mary."
