Chapter 440 Deacon's Grudge
Dovie's death left many people puzzled, mainly because the illness was too suspicious, and the deterioration of the illness was too rapid.
Mark said, "Take me for an example; I smoke and drink every day. The doctor told me to quit smoking, but I'm still living well."
Walker also said, "Dovie was indeed in good health before her death. If it was an accidental death, it could be explained. But going from illness to severe coma, almost losing her life, it's hard to believe that there is no anything fishy."
Joe added, "Since she's gone, we're just talking privately among ourselves. We just felt regretful."
Finnegan put down his glass, lit a cigarette, and said, "I understand what you all mean. It happened suddenly. The autopsy results came out, and it was temporarily discovered that my mother-in-law died due to excessive injection of drugs, causing organ overload and eventual failure. As for why she was so severely ill before, there is no conclusion yet. The doctor mentioned dietary habits, lifestyle, and other factors that also played a part."
After expressing regret, they continued with eating and drinking.
Finnegan made an excuse to go out to take a call, knowing there was surveillance in the corridor, deliberately avoiding it and heading to a quiet balcony.
Deacon didn't see Finnegan on the surveillance, which made him anxious, so he sent someone to check the private room.
Sure enough, Finnegan was gone.
He disappeared right under Deacon's nose.
Deacon went out to search personally. He descended to the top floor, followed the direction where Finnegan disappeared on the surveillance, and continued toward the area without surveillance.
Suddenly, Deacon saw half a shoe sticking out at the small balcony ahead.
Deacon approached cautiously, and suddenly, a tall figure emerged from behind the balcony wall, startling Deacon.
"Looking for me?" Finnegan asked, cigarette in his mouth, his eyes sharp and cold.
Thinking quickly, Deacon replied, "I came here to smoke."
Finnegan didn't expose him and made some space for him.
The balcony was small, just enough for two adult men to stand and smoke.
Deacon calmed down, walked over, leaned against the balcony railing, and pretended to search his pockets but didn't have a lighter.
"Here, use mine." Finnegan handed him a lighter.
Deacon's expression stiffened, and he instinctively said, "Thank you."
Deacon realized he was being overly polite to Finnegan. 'Aren't we enemies? Why am I being so courteous?' he thought.
With these thoughts, Deacon's heart sank. He lit a cigarette and exhaled smoke.
Deacon asked, "This place isn't easy to find. How did you find it?"
This was a deliberate attempt to get closer.
Finnegan looked at Deacon directly and asked, "You look somewhat familiar. Have we met before?"
With just a few words, Deacon felt a bit flustered, thinking he might have exposed himself, but then he composed himself. "Probably not. You dress like a nobleman. I wouldn't have the chance to meet people of your caliber."
"Maybe I mistook you for someone else." Finnegan took a drag of his cigarette and said, "You don't seem like an ordinary person. Where do you work?"
"Selling things here and there, just making a living," Deacon replied, "I came here today to have a meal with friends."
Deacon was the behind-the-scenes boss of the club, not known to the general public.
Finnegan glanced at Deacon, saying with hidden meaning, "It's not easy to make money these days. Life is precious. You should cherish it and live well."
Finnegan patted Deacon's shoulder and walked away.
Finnegan intentionally disappeared from the surveillance to see what Deacon's intentions were.
Sure enough, after he disappeared, Deacon came looking for him.
In Finnegan's memory, he couldn't recall any grudges with Deacon. As for Deacon's relationship with Niamh, that would only be known after his investigation.
After Finnegan left, Deacon extinguished his cigarette, and a memory of a car accident flashed in his mind. It happened ten years ago when his parents were hit by a car while crossing the road, thrown meters away, and died on the spot.
At that time, Deacon was abroad and returned upon hearing the news. After investigating, he found out that the vehicle involved in the accident belonged to Finnegan. There was no surveillance in that area at the time, and the dashcam was destroyed. The police claimed it was Finnegan's driver who was driving.
Deacon didn't accept this result. He investigated further and found out that the driver wasn't in New York at the time. Deacon was convinced that Finnegan had bribed the police to make the driver take the blame.
"Finnegan."
Deacon gritted his teeth, staring in the direction Finnegan had left, his eyes filled with hatred.
